  1. That is Aderet: https://aderetrestaurant.com/ Really good place. I'm a goyim, but have some observant clients that have taken me there for lunch meetings.
  2. FIFY
  3. That's exactly what I'm saying. There is no way for the IRS to know the circumstances of the payment. To them, a payment made to a taxpayer reported on a Form 1099 is going to be automatically classified as taxable income.
  4. Here's another wrinkle for those that just want to have the IRS send you a bill for what the declare what you owe based upon all of the electronic data that has been sent to them about you: Venmo, The $600 Threshold, And You: What’s An (Honest) Taxpayer To Do? https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxvox/venmo-600-threshold-and-you-whats-honest-taxpayer-do As an example, say that you buy Longhorn season tickets for a group of your friends and they pay you back for their share of the cost through Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle. Starting in 2024, that payment is going to be reported to the IRS on a Form 1099 that the IRS will assume to be income to you. Good luck sorting all of that out with the IRS even under the current system, much less some kind of automated system where the IRS figures it all out for you automatically.
  5. I think that the finished product yields (raw vs. trimmed vs. sliceable meat) are pretty bad when it is cooked correctly and fully rendered the way that good brisket joints do it these days.
  6. A good choice if you are willing to go with a "heads I win -- tails you lose" approach. I think it takes away most of the upside of home ownership and wealth creation. You may as well be renting your home, IMHO. I also think we are due for a real correction in rental rates and property values once all of the new MF projects come on line. People are focused on Austin proper (that is certainly a big number of units), but there are so many projects in process all the way from Jarrell to Lockhart, Georgetown to Cedar Park, Buda to New Braunfels, Bee Cave to Marble Falls. I don't see how all of this new product doesn't disrupt the market in a big way.
  7. The downside of the Mueller affordable housing is that you don't fully own your own home. If you sell "your" home in the first year, 100% of the profit goes back to the Affordable Home Program. If you sell "your" home in subsequent years, your realized profit is limited to 2% (simple interest) for each year of ownership, the rest of the profit goes back to the Affordable Home Program. Given the current inflation environment, that sounds like a money losing deal. Might be a good move to wait for the bloodbath of rent decreases when the current deluge of new apartment construction fully hits the market.
  8. I've been a CPA for over 40 years. The tax code was still very complicated back when we prepared tax returns by hand in pencil. The tax software (both the professional stuff that accounting firms use and the retail stuff like TurboTax) has made it much easier to prepare returns and to deal with complex stuff like Alternative Minimum Tax, Qualified Business Income deductions, Self Employment tax, operating or capital loss carryforwards, depreciation, etc. The free filing approach may be fine for many W-2 folks that don't have any deductions, rental properties, or other business interests. But high net worth business owners (like all the Surly lawyers) that have pass-through partnership income, different business interests, complex investments, and such are never gonna be interested in just trusting the IRS to tell them what they owe.
  9. FIFY.
  10. Nice buck. I say 3.5. Tight belly still above chest line.

    Tex Mex

Never heard of that place, but menu looks solid. Most any place in Austin that has Menudo on their every day menu is on my golden list. Thanks.

    Tex Mex

Joe's Bakery is the place that errybody on this site should be going to whenever they get the chance. P.S. Texas Chili Parlor, Juan in a Million, Amaya's Taco Village, and maybe others are also acceptable choices. Ain't nobody gots time for chain Tex-Mex!
  13. Crazy game. 29-0 Colorado first half. 26-0 Stanford second half. 12 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.
  14. Here. Watching Stanford at Colorado. Should be a fun 4th quarter!
  15. So -- Terry Kath doesn't make the top 250 list? But Vince Gill does? OK then -- that says a lot about this list.
  16. Surely there is a decimal point issue here. 25 MG is in the range of a normal gummy dosage.
  17. ABQ is a bit rough, but not without redeeming qualities, namely Sadie's on 4th Street. I've been going there since back in the Valley Bowling Alley days.
  18. Don Meredith speaking about Walt Garrison’s dependability, “If it was third down, and you needed four yards, if you’d get the ball to Walt Garrison, he’d get you five. And if it was third down and you needed twenty yards, if you’d get the ball to Walt Garrison, by God, he’d get you five.'” RIP, Walt.
  19. C'mon counselor, I know that you could easily advocate for either side of that argument!
  20. Athlete's are gonna athlete!
  21. Ripped it off from this article during the Covid stuff. Some other good Austin related Zoom backgrounds, too. Keep Your Meetings Local With 10 Extremely Austin Zoom Backgrounds https://austin.towers.net/keep-your-meetings-local-with-10-extremely-austin-zoom-backgrounds/?pro=jude@towers.net
  22. My UT-centric clients always recognize that background.
  23. My favorite virtual background for Zoom calls:
  24. Enjoy the food and drink, regardless. What a great place!
