  1. I'm still looking forward to taking my granddaughter for a ride on a kiddie railroad in Zilker Park.
  2. Thought this was pretty cool: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10_0mTJbPqG4J1J-Qex7KKaMfKN42OrbEfKS3ZqiIhRU/edit#gid=0
  3. Not according to the pleadings of the club members participating in the class actions.
  4. There is a reason that most private country and downtown clubs put language like this on their checkout tabs: "The service charge calculated on all food and beverage transactions is applied toward offering employees a higher hourly rate and used toward offsetting costs associated with employee benefits." There has been significant litigation as to whether the club member had the expectation that the service charge was going directly to the server or if that the charge was, in effect, additional member dues or assessments.
  5. The Electric-Vehicle Bubble Starts to Deflate By The Editorial Board Aug. 21, 2023 6:38 pm ET https://www.wsj.com/articles/electric-vehicles-china-biden-administration-industrial-policy-754e1937?mod=hp_opin_pos_1 "It’s ironic, to say the least, that the U.S. is seeking to imitate China’s economic model at the moment that its industrial policy fractures. Look no further than its collapsing electric-vehicle bubble, which is a lesson in how industries built by government often also fail because of government." Snip: "Cox Automotive reported this month that EV inventory had swelled to 103 days of supply in the U.S., about double that of gas-powered cars. Auto makers and dealers are discounting EVs to sell their growing supply. The average EV price paid by consumers has fallen 20% compared with a year ago to $53,438, driven by Tesla’s price cuts and dealer incentives. Ford recently reduced its EV production targets as its losses and unsold inventory grow. At the end of June, it had 116 days of unsold Mustang Mach-Es, and GM’s electric Hummer had more than 100 days of supply. And this is in a growing economy. Traditional auto makers will have to raise prices on gas-powered cars to compensate for their EV losses. A United Auto Workers executive said Sunday that Stellantis is threatening to move production of its Ram 1500 trucks to Mexico from suburban Detroit, no doubt to reduce costs. The EV jobs President Biden touts will come at the cost of union jobs building gas-powered vehicles." Sorry if you can't get behind WSJ paywall. If you can't, perhaps you could reconsider some of your life choices.
  6. We use these on our lease: http://judgefeeders.com/ Not the cheapest, but varmint-proof and low so easier to fill just standing up or from the back of a pickup truck.
  7. I got excited until I realized that sale wasn't the Tarrytown Shopping Center owned by that animal rights activist.
  8. Here’s How Downtown Austin’s Block-Sized Hobby Building Could Redevelop https://austin.towers.net/heres-how-downtown-austins-block-sized-hobby-building-could-redevelop/?pro=caitlyn@towers.net
  9. I thought that I hated bourbon and scotch when I was in college -- after I graduated I figured out that our frat treasurer only bought cheap and shitty bootleg liquor for our parties. Edit -- that stuff came from here on North Lamar -- their store brand -- the worst.
  10. Hadn't looked until now, but I'm guessing that place is OK: https://texashighways.com/travel-news/austins-broken-spoke-dance-hall-finally-gets-its-texas-historical-marker/
  11. He overcame a lot of adversity. Taylor Duck, aggy Corp dork. But was later a UT grad and member of Texas Sigma Chi. What was his handle on TOS?
  12. I've been long on LUV stock for a long time. Skadden Arps is expensive. I don't see this exercise as a good use of LUV's money, certainly not a hill to die on. Just a weird fact situation -- get it resolved and resume moving folks around the country.
  13. Yep. There is a BS story out on the interwebs this week about the 100 best restaurants in Texas, based upon Yelp ratings. What a cluster! https://www.yelp.com/collection/vDbu1mpLEKomVmXmXNWG0Q/Top-100-Places-to-Eat-in-Texas-2023 As far as Houston goes, I'd agree with Brisket & Rice for 'cue, and maybe State of Grace for fine dining, but this list shows why it pays to be dubious of Yelp reviews.
  14. Booked for the Dallas concert on 9-1, EW&F always puts on a great show. First time to see Lionel's stuff. It should be a very large time that evening.
  15. IDK how they decided on Hole in the Wall (probably a great choice), but they sure as heck need to be doing the same thing for Saxon Pub, Continental Club, Broken Spoke, Ginny's Little Longhorn, etc.
  16. That is some smoke -- and not the good kind.
  17. If I recall correctly, the State bought out Fort Apache (as we used to lovingly call the "Hobby Building") to help bail out the Brown Maroney, et al. law firm that had sunk a bunch of their and their employee's retirement funds into that dumb project. They were facing some major fiduciary issues related to the alleged misuse of the funds of their legal assistants and secretary's if that whole project had gone tits up -- which many did back in those days.
  18. The Rice University forum is over there ------>
  19. All the credit goes to Judge F. Scott McCown, a true idoit (no CR -- it is known!).
  20. The game warden thing never occurred to me. We've always been on a first name basis with them and they having a standing invite at our table. They have a tough job.
  21. Nay. I try to keep my phone far, far away when I am out hunting.
  22. I got invited to a "BBQ" in Wisconsin one time. The "BBQ" turned out to be ground beef Sloppy Joe's made with BBQ sauce and served out of a crock-pot. At least there was plenty of cold beer being that it was Wisconsin and all, so that was nice.
  23. Nice rack.
  24. No shit. All of that was pretty stupid. Do better.
