  1. At the risk of sounding like aggy, Hawaii really is a unique place that can't really be understood unless you live there. I've lived in multiple cities, states, and countries and the Hawaiian resilience and communal approach is unlike anything I've experienced anywhere else in the world. Also, anyone spouting off their conspiracy theories can fuck right off. There's no fucking conspiracy. Any amount of time a conspiracy theorist spends spewing their bullshit on TikTok is time that they could actually be putting to use helping the situation -- organizing donations, volunteering time, etc.
  2. All the while breathing smoke and fending off ash and embers, and 80 mph winds, and hypothermia. And night ocean terror. People who are like "why not just jump into the ocean? Problem solved!" have absolutely no clue how horrifying that ordeal would be, or how lucky the survivors are. Many accounts of people (injured, out of shape, elderly, young) just floating out to the night sea never to be seen again.
  3. It's posted on the first page of the thread. Hawaii Community Foundation will give 100% of all funds to victims. They will take no overhead. They are a pillar organization in Hawaii. My wife works closely with them and knows how they work with local communities (and she works with a bunch of other orgs that she is not recommending). Every amount helps and will go directly to victims: https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/maui-strong
  4. He will have a great year. Gavin and Drake are his competition, and the sooner's schedule is trash. However, he won't have the kind of great year that Worthy, AD, Neyor, or JWhitt will have. Which is why his second-tier ass left.
  5. ou will look fine this year simply because their schedule is absolute ass. They dodge everyone at the top of the Big 12 except us. Fortunately that will build false hope and confidence there, and then when the SEC grind begins they will be truly fucked.
  6. I want to quote this -- this is the best place to donate. HCF will give 100% of all funds directly to victims and restoration. They will not take anything for operating or admin costs. My wife works closely with HCF and with many families in Maui, and she knows firsthand that HCF will do right by any money donated. Please give what you can.
  7. My wife reminded me that the last time she went through her mom's pantry and cleaned it out, there were spices and other things that had been expired for more than 15 years. What's amazing is that her parents had moved at least 3 times during that 15 years, so not only were the spices etc expired, but she had actually packed them, moved them, and unpacked them at least 3 times.
  8. If this is true, and the Texas NIL did offer enough life-changing money for CS to choose us, then I say thank God and it's about damn time. We are finally in a position to put our biggest strengths -- money, donors, and alumni networks -- to good use. Fuck the low rent SEC. And honestly if the money is going to help his family manage his little brother's challenges, even more reason to celebrate. Hook 'em.
  9. Well, we now know Simmons is still alive and, potentially, leaving his house. Quality intel.
  10. maybe that explains why van Buren was such a goddamn fucking disgraceful shitstain (I know nothing about van Buren)
  11. Anyone who uses the word "right?" at the end of every sentence. Anyone who walks into my office and says "I love what you've done with the place." Anyone who brings two large dogs to work and lets them run free among the offices. PS - I hate my co-worker.
  12. I've gotten most of my weekend shit done during Longhorn football games for the past 12+ years because I've been either too nervous or too pissed to just sit and watch the games. Lotta nervous energy. I'm really hoping for some nice old fashioned ass kicking this fall so I can laze around, drink, and watch the game in peace. Bonus will be not terrifying my pets and children when I scream at the television.
  13. I can't. My probation officer won't let me. I wasn't saying anything about that specific serial pedophile. He may well have a bent brain. I was responding to the comment that "they can't be cured," which was true for a long time but is no longer an absolute truth. I work in mental health, and although this isn't my area I have many colleagues on the academic and treatment sides that do good effective work reducing recidivism with sexual offenders.
  14. This isn't an absolute. Offenders of all types, sexual and non-sexual, can change. Treatment for sex offenders can be effective, depending on the person, circumstances, treatment modality, etc.
  15. I mean seriously, how is that FDNY helmet not just some sort of practical joke?
  16. Yeah, I was fortunate (?) that when my dad had about a year left from his terminal illness that his mind stayed sharp enough and I had enough time to go through the house, room by room, and talk to him about what was what. It was really good to have that opportunity. Stuff I thought was important was actually useless, and stuff I thought was meaningless was actually important for sentimental reasons. I honestly don't remember a lot of what he said about this or that, but the time together was valuable and the reality is that I look back on that time together fondly, even in the midst of the hell and agony surrounding it.
  17. My in-laws go to Dairy Queen with a bunch of other olds, take up several tables, and order a few kid's meals between them. Not enough for everyone to have their own, just a few to share. And only on Monday evenings because that's when they get the weekly senior discount. What a bunch of assholes. And I can't wait to do the same thing when I get to that point.
