  1. I have a similar rule (even though I’m happily married), except it’s never date a girl who’s named for something Western: Cheyenne (any spelling), Dakota, Cody (especially with an i), Montana, Sky (any spelling), Aspen, River, or Heifer.
  2. Great video. Not unexpected from Joe Klatt. I may just stop with that (until the 30 FOR 30 comes out). The huge shoutout to VY was a nice bonus.
  3. The amazing thing is that Tammy had 27 charted singles between 1967 and 1976, and fully 2/3 (18) went to #1. She didn’t have a #1 solo hit after 1976.
  4. I met George Jones in the Spring of 1980 when I was a Freshman at UT and a bartender at the Silver Dollar South. He had just released He Stopped Loving Her Today. My boss was the same boss I had in SA before heading to Austin. He hired me on the spot when he saw me at the SDS one night. He was a former APD officer who had referred me to the worst job in Austin, Longhorn Security (I have stories). He felt guilty, I guess. Anyway, my bar was next to the stage. It was the least busy bar in the place, but I got to meet performers like John Anderson and Dottie West. My boss had one demand of me that night… don’t let George get too drunk to perform. There had been a previous incident at one of the Silver Dollars, and he didn’t want a repeat George hit the bar between sets. I poured him a whiskey and did the only thing I could think of, which was try to talk to him like I wasn’t a fanboy. It must’ve worked, because he didn’t ask for another drink. He did open up about how life on the road wasn’t glamorous, and how it made married life difficult (he and Tammy had divorced, and he hadn’t remarried yet). He told me that there were times he wished he had a normal life like mine would be. He didn’t cry, fortunately, because my boss would’ve been even more pissed if George couldn’t come back out because he was a blubbering mess. After his second set, he came back to my bar and invited me to go to Sambo’s in Sunset Valley (now Hyde Park Bar & Grill on Westgate) with him and the band. My boss said I could leave, but I’d have to find someone to close my bar and reconcile my register. Of course, none of the other bartenders were going to lift a finger for the snot-nosed 19-year old new guy. Still pisses me off, even though I probably would’ve done the same thing.
  5. Black Hills, adjacent to Custer State Park (you can see the high fence in the first pic below). ”Funny” thing is, I received these photos yesterday of a larger herd (probably the same herd). The boys couldn’t resist messing with this camera, either. I’m learning about camera placement and elk. There are at least a dozen elk on the hillside that are washed out in the sun. From these and other pics, I figure there were >40.
  6. Our family had a white Ford Granada with a red vinyl half top. The TV ads said it could be confused with a Mercedes. When my friends and I met up to drag race right after we finished driver’s ed and got our licenses, everyone else’s family car smoked our Granada (which couldn’t even peel out). It was fucking humiliating. Ours was a ‘77. I’m sure that made a difference. My mom’s cat escaped from its box (carriers weren’t really a thing back then) on the way to the vet to be put down and pissed on the back seat. Summers in SA made for a pleasant ride after that.
  7. It’s been a frustrating Fall so far. We had decent elk numbers in Oct, but I was unable to hunt the first (Oct) season because: 1) a new grand baby arrived in the opposite direction; and 2) my cow tag was only good for the last half of October. Nov came, and the elk went because our stock pond (tank) dried up. The guy who runs cattle on our acreage said they all moved to a large ranch NE of us where there is a creek. That ranch had 150-200 elk. The deer were also somewhat scarce during the two week firearms season ending 11/30. I just received cellular trail cam pics of a herd of >30 elk: None of them appear to be big bulls, but whatever, I have a cow tag: This is the largest bull I caught on camera… …and probably will capture because some teenagers horsing around knocked my camera off the mount not even an hour after I started getting pics. I’m 230 miles away, it’s holiday season, and my wife is having health issues pop up, so who knows if I’ll get out there by Dec 31. At least I’m still alive and kicking.
  8. Christmas gift idea for the lady…
  9. Still have a copy of his book, signed by Heard, Fred Akers, and Tom Landry.* It covers games through 1980. * I helped with an Arthritis Foundation BBQ at the Byrum (Bynum?) Ranch west of Dripping Springs in 1984. Those three were guests of honor. Heard was peddling his book, and I got a complimentary copy for my volunteer efforts. It was an interesting day for several reasons.
  10. B.S. Autocorrect inserts BBC when I make mistakes, and I never even watch British television.
  11. Texas and Florida were in the same conference? I’m getting old.
  12. I want Texas to refuse ANY matchup that is officiated by B12 crews.
  13. I assume you’re referencing this play. The refs blew the play dead because our RB’s ass was on the turf when the ISU player was ripping the ball loose. He hadn’t emerged with the ball at the point when the play was whistled dead.
  14. I sent that to my Florida cousin in 2018? when Broward County was having trouble counting votes…yet again. It wasn’t well received.
  15. It’s been a rough year for the royals.
