  1. Cliff notes. John’s sister got tired of him mismanaging (or choose whatever word you want) his truck on South 1st and fired him and took over his business and renamed it either with a French article or West Coast city. Several posters did not think that aggression should stand, man. John then spiraled out of control and ran two or three (I lost count) of other stores out of business (some of which some posters may or may not have invested in) all the while putting out some of the best brisket in the world. Then he died.
  2. Kinda like what JFK said about Washington DC. A city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm.

    Pizza

Do people really like the pizza at Pinthouse? I like their beer selection but the pizza is so lame. Is there a special way to order it that I’m missing?
  5. Beautiful pouring rain at Bee Cave Road and Capital of Texas Highway Right Now!

    Burgers

Cheddar cheese burger at Billy's and a 512 IPA. It's a beautiful day. Should crosspost to the Awful Texas Foodways thread for the delicious raw onions.
  7. Growing up in Oklahoma, pear halves with a dollop of Miracle Whip and grated cheddar cheese were something that my friend's old-maid aunts would bring to the Church Potluck Dinner. We would dare each other to finish one.
  8. Somewhat recent (at least in the last 20 years) is sweet tea. I want iced tea. I don't want to have to order unsweet iced tea, i want to just say I want an iced tea and get an unsweet iced tea. If you want sweet tea, you're either 10 years old or from Georgia.
  9. Storms blowing up in the 78746!

    Tex Mex

Guess I'd like to know what your alls places for Tex Mex are in Austin. El Mercado, Santa Rita, Maudies, Polvos, Matt's, are all pretty much the same to me. Decent food for decent prices (other than Polvos which is overpriced for what it is) . Madres probably tops them all for tacos and El Dorado for everything else. Austin's Tex Mex doesn't compare to SATX or Houston though.

    Tex Mex

It's basic Austin Tex Mex dinner staples. Taco, Cheese enchilada, rice and beans. If you're wanting something more exotic yeah it's not the go to. I like it for what it is. Same reason I like to sit out back at Green Mesquite and drink Shiner Bock and eat a chopped beef sandwich.

    Tex Mex

No clue about the Burnet Road store but the South First is in our rotation. Rarely a bad meal. It's the Santa Rita of South Austin crowd wise. Spicy margarita is also... Spicy
  13. I guess to each their own, but a burger just needs Pickes, onions and mustard (cheese if youre hungry). I won't quarrel with folks that want other toppings, but Mayo only belongs on club sandwichs and artichokes.
  14. Was talking to the bartender at the hotel we're staying at on the North Shore last night. Asked him if he sold many of those. He laughed and said they called them a Jersey Turnpike.
  15. Heading to the North Shore tomorrow for 10 days. Food truck and bar recommendations appreciated.
  16. Four part series coming out on HBO. Series premiere at SxSW. https://www.austinchronicle.com/screens/2025-03-07/inside-the-unspeakable-killings-that-changed-austin-forever/

    BBQ

Similar to Bert's. Their catering when they still had the campus location was great. In store not so much (other than the T Man)

    Grandkids

Did a search of a few similar terms and didn’t see an existing thread. My oldest had a baby girl a little more than a year ago. My granddaughter is the coolest little girl I’ve ever been around. Is almost always happy, rarely cries and gives the sweetest little bemused smile at my idiotic antics to get her attention. I guess this is the meaning of life. And I’m really, really cool with that.
  25. Dumb question time. I had my own skis back in the late 70s and 80s. Last set is a 180cm K2 612 Competition Series (that I still have, lol). Since then, I've always rented demos to avoid the hassle of traveling with skis. I do have my own boots and replace them about every five years (side bar, Boot Mechanics in Avon rocks). Just recently I now have a place in Northern New Mexico where I can keep a set of skis and am thinking about getting skis and leaving them there for when I'm in the area. Been looking at Atomic Bent 100 or 110s since I'm old (60+) and am more into cruising and easy blacks these days. Found a decent deal on the skis, but am unsure what to do about bindings. Do bindings make a big difference or can I go with any mid priced set?
