I don't want to derail the thread, but you're likely to also see major overhauls at the statehouse level which will lead to completely redrawn districts after the 2020 Census. I'm not talking immediate, short-term.

Well, a lot of districts need to be redrawn.  If they're gerrymandered just as bad the other way . . . that's not right, either.

<to David Dennison> No, you don't share my frustration. You've been pretty open about looking forward to as extreme as possible of a progressive backlash on a variety of issues. As much as you don't like the results of these procedures Trump is creating, you look forward to using the tools Trump is creating for your own side.

Moderates like me are going to be fucked twice when that happens.

Talk and expose it and don't normalize the behavior. Make sure your friends and family know it's a national security election and make sure they vote.

What is your concern about what might happen with a slight Dem majority in the House and Senate as well as a Dem POTUS?  SCOTUS will still be conservative.  What "backlash" are you anticipating?

  3. How many car thieves are trying to subsequently injure or kill someone?

A gun has one purpose:  to inflict harm.  If you cannot keep it secure, you deserve to share the blame when it is used in that manner, even if you didn't pull the trigger.

Then what are you trying to achieve?

Personally, I would like to see a reduction in the effectiveness as well as frequency of mass shootings.   I believe the former can be addressed by limiting magazine capacity and perhaps firing rate.  Whether that solution reduces the frequency of events, I don't know.

I absolutely support longer waiting periods, better reporting, and elimination of private sale loopholes.  While it appears that the statistics don't actually point to "mental illness" as a significant correlating factor with these events, I would sure like to see this country address mental health in a more positive manner.

And I'm asking the folks who purport to limit that liberty interest to define what they are trying to achieve.  Zero accidental gun deaths ever?

    No.

Gonna be hard to top with the next guy, but never count out our political parties and the American electorate.

I'm trying to imagine the list of those who could trump Trump as POTUS:

    Alex Jones

    Caitlyn Jenner

    Eric Trump

  7. I take a calculated risk when I drive or fly.  I don't think it's reasonable to say that children and teachers should take calculated risks when going to school.

For one thing, school (of some sort) is mandatory up to a certain age.

Each new day, yesterday's stupid seems smarter.

That was the line that impressed me the most.  Like, totally.  Totes.

Huh.  I probably hadn't heard anything of theirs in over a decade.  Last time I listened they were very alt-country, but the stuff I just checked out was definitely in the "experimental rock" category.  So fair enough, I concede, they are a rock band. :)

They always had a little alt-country vibe, but with equal doses of pscyh (especially later) and classic rock 'n roll.  This is the 2nd cut on their debut album -- pretty hard to claim any influence stronger than the Stones on this one (and to your point, nobody would accuse the Stones of not having a country twist in a lot of their music, either):

What difference does it make what his motivations are?

Doing the right thing is doing the right thing regardless of political ambitions.

The guy standing up for decency and respecting norms is really provocative.

    That’s how far we’ve fallen.

It's as if you didn't actually read what I wrote.  Unclench.
