  1. Just watched a rerun of Tommy Shaw with Cleveland's Contemporary Youth Orchestra, and while he mostly played acoustic guitar and mandolin, he brought out a couple of gorgeous Les Pauls -- one blonde with almost no burst, whereas the other appeared to be a tea burst with a whammy bar:

Side note:  the guy is a phenomenal musician.  Say what you will about Styx, but those songs are more complex than one might think, and heavily grounded in English folk progressions.  His voice is still absolutely superb at age 63 (when taped), and he's obviously a smokin' rock guitarist.  It's a thoroughly enjoyable concert.(AXSTV, 340 on DirecTV).  The youth orchestra absolutely kicks ass, in particular a young guy in the concertmaster position (violin).

But you see, since no one has any accounting of his income taxes, we have no idea if he's personally benefiting from the market or not.

I've never understood why anyone would think his income tax returns would represent the truth in any way, shape or form.

The next president (who am I kidding - Trump is the last president of the United States...but IF we have another) will need to spend their first days in office calling allies and saying some version of the “so...it’s like we were really drunk and said and did a lotta really stupid and hurtful stuff last night...ummm...we’re sorry” speech. To every single one of our allies. And some of our just international acquaintances.

The thing is, our allies know we're being fucked over by Trump.  This is not to say there won't be hell to pay, because "ally" only goes so far, but ultimately there will some conciliation.

I would not want to be in any of those meetings.  "That's a bingo" doesn't even begin to describe the glee that will be exhibited on the other side of the table.

  4. That's one of the worst.  She's tough as nails, but this doesn't sound good, regardless of what her docs say (and the fact that I'm so not a doctor and have zero qualifications to pass judgment).

  5. That beatdown is an oldie, but what always gets me is how some people seem to be utterly clueless that they're lucky to not have to eat dinner through a straw.  Goliath could have probably killed that gal without even trying, and yet she was still yapping after getting a reprieve.

  6. I just looked at the Gibson page.  If I were in the market for a Les Paul, just within the Original series alone I think it would take me a month to figure out which finish is "best" and even then I'd probably stress about it afterwards.  Lordy those are beautiful guitars.

Any idea on the main difference between the '50s and '60s models (not the P90 version of '50s)?

Didn't care when it was Clinton.  Don't care now.  As long as it's consensual and everybody's of age, none of my business.

I'd prefer they not fuck on the roof of Federal buildings but yeah, I really don't care what consenting adults do as long as there is no sexual harassment going on.

So outline what your problem with it is. As of now your "solution" is crying about how the other side won't do anything while simultaneously shooting down every proposal that actually stands a chance.

You'd have to provide a lot more information about how private gun owners would run background checks, as well as how their liability would come into play.  But more than that, you're being completely disingenuous when you imply that the left has stonewalled the right on any and all gun control measures.  In point of fact the left has promoted many such measures and the right is almost totally resistant to change.  But hey, blame the other guy.

Edit:  neg repped for crying #turnaboutbitch

The left talks about closing the gun show loophole all the time, but when presented with an proposal that would allow private sellers the ability to perform background checks without having to go through an FFL and protecting the privacy of citizens it didn't get any support in the Senate except for from McCain.

Great, you identified one proposal that allegedly didn't get any support and yet you've labeled the left as resistant to all proposals by gun owners.  Do you have any fucking idea how utterly irritating that is?

Well there are lots of gun owners who have suggested sensible measures we could take that would help things, but they aren't extreme enough for the left, and the left can't claim credit for it. Better to just do nothing than actually listen to those who are familiar with things and can possibly make a difference than let the wrong team get a win.

This is such a bullshit perspective.

  11. I would say this -- for kids raised in Texas and who want to work in Texas, UT might be more advisable, depending on department.  Metallurgy or Mining Engineering?  Well, that's right Mines' wheelhouse.  More broad, traditional degrees?  I can see Boeing or Dell possibly giving the nod to UT, depending on who is doing the interviewing.  Doesn't mean they're RIGHT, but lots of hiring managers half-ass the process.

  12. A couple of extra points:

-- if they continue to play 0.621 ball (23-14) throughout the rest of the season, the Cardinals will end up 90-72 (0.556)

    -- 0.500 ball (19-18) will put them at 86-76 (0.531)

It's a good thing the NL Central sucks.

  13. I'm liking Roman's character more and more.  Shiv had been the only fully-formed persona, but Roman is catching up and actually displaying some depth of thought.  Plus, he doesn't give a fuck about anything.  Kendall is a zombie at this point, Tom is still an insecure, mostly dysfunctional waste of space, and Logan is a cartoon.

  14. This Karen lady . . . I have to believe there is a far more lenient culture in the southeast when it comes to schools outing each other over recruiting improprieties.  Yeah, those schools hate each other too, but I think it's a case of "honor among thieves".

Roll into Texas, and guess what?  UT and A&M have a strong tendency to try to fuck each other over whenever possible.  Fortunately for us, they're far more likely to bend the rules.  Throw that in with an insane jealous streak when they can't get ahead even while cheating, and we have the current dynamic between the two schools.

Oh, in case anyone needs a cheat sheet:

texags:  effectively an arm of Texas A&M

surlyhorns:  UT so wishes we would just go away, preferably in a fire
