  1. Hunter, Abmas, Holland, Disu, and Shedrick is a very solid starting 5 with Cunningham as an excellent 6th man. Hopefully Anamekwe can be a contributor. That’s 7 players. They will still need at least 2 more guys who can play. Not getting Hunter or Abmas would be devastating.
  2. Bannon goes down first when Brantley comes back. When Altuve comes back I think they’ll send down Salazar and Diaz will shift into a traditional backup C role. When McCormick comes back it’ll be either Julks or Hensley. One thing to note is that Julks did see quite a bit of time at 3B in AAA last season, and can probably handle 1B when Abreu needs a rest once every 10 games. For now the way Julks is playing, you can’t send him down. A bench of McCormick (CF/RF), Dubon (SS/2B/3B), Diaz (C) and Julks (LF/1B/DH) is pretty sick.
  3. Agree with all this, although I do think that last round of stimulus pushed thru was overkill, and said so at the time. But I agree the main mistake was assuming inflation was transitory (and I was guilty of that too). And I agree that labor shortages are due to demographics, not laziness, so they’re here to stay. I am not sure how decoupling from China is gonna play out and there’s a lot of geopolitical unknowns hanging out there, but there’s also a lot of reason for optimism.
  4. Hunter, Abmas, Holland, Cunningham, and Disu is a solid enough starting 5. Anamekwe and 2-3 other transfer role players would be enough to expect a tourney berth.
  5. Is this being strategized by matching roster positions with funding sources? I would assume offensive skill positions can be funded by corporate $, which only leaves TE, OL, defense, and special teams to be funded by BMDs and fan collectives. It sure seems like schools building endowments for their roster rather than living Hand to mouth will benefit greatly long term.
  6. I think Solis is on a relief track now, but he could be a good one. His goal for this season should just be to stay healthy and put himself in a position to need Rule 5 protection in the fall. That would put him on track to compete for a bullpen spot next spring (or more likely be trade bait).
  7. Yes. He has been paired with Jairo Solis who is listed as tonight’s starter.
  8. VERY different players. One was a 300 pound lazy ass who didn’t like baseball but was incredibly naturally gifted so he went ahead and did it until it got hard then he quit. Julks is a plus athlete who grinded his way thru the minors and has some defensive and baserunning value to buffer his bat.
  9. He obviously is being very aggressive so far in the majors and it’s worked so I wouldn’t ding him for lack of walks this season. His 9.5% walk rate last season wasn’t great but also wasn’t terrible, considering how productive he was. I am usually not too worried about prospects not walking if they aren’t pedigreed, at least until they start getting pitched around.
  10. Average to below average. He can be a good defensive LF but he’s stretched in CF/RF.
  11. Julks’ two hits had EV of 107 and 109. Big league pitchers may find a weakness but he has a lot of potential to be a good big league hitter for awhile.
  12. What’s funnier is he was calling for “the guy who showed out last year” to be called up instead. Julks showed out like a mf last season with a 30/20 year in AAA. The guy he clamored for broke out in AA last season but sucked in AAA and is currently sucking in AAA again.
  13. 10 years of rosaries. You know, I’ve done ten years of rosaries. Did them like you’ve never seen. Some people are saying it’s the best decade of rosaries ever.
  14. Brutal 72 hours. We need to keep Hunter, Disu, Cunningham, Holland, and Anamekwe; that’s 2 really good starters, a great 6th/7th man, a dynamic freshman who can start or be the 6th man, and a depth F who would be fine as the 3rd or 4th guy off the bench for a good team. In order to even have tournament aspirations we need to add an all-conference caliber scoring guard and an established big man. After that it would be good to add another ball handler and another player with some size for depth. Things are lookin dicey.
  15. It’s insane. 2023 will be the first year I didn’t attend a Texas basketball or baseball game since 1998. I also usually buy tickets to every Express game against the Astros affiliate, until this year they were never more than $20/ticket even for the best seats in the house. This year I only bought for one of those games because they were $32/ticket. Can’t be sustainable.
  16. All the pundits think Sarah Palin torpedoed McCain. It was the other way around. If she’d waited until 2016 or after and hopped on the Trump train, she’d be president by now.
  17. I find it encouraging that we aren’t hearing of Texas targeting LB in the portal. Hints that they may be fine with Hill, Lefau, Blackwell, and/or Gbenda playing a lot. If that’s the case, then this roster could probably use one more good experienced DL but otherwise I don’t see any weaknesses from a talent/experience/depth perspective.
  18. Shittier than Trump and DeSantis??? Not possible.
  19. Some decent ideas but almost none that have a chance of getting done in the next 10 years. My state-level issues that I think have some chance being addressed: tweak Robin Hood legalize weed legalize gambling Pipe dreams: TEA overhaul: dramatic increases in teacher salaries, dramatic decreases in student/teacher ratio Extended waiting periods, red flag laws, and increased background checks for guns Medicare/Medicaid expansion State funded public college for all High speed rail that follows I-10, I-35, and I-45
  20. They have 2 bullpen meltdowns and 2 crummy SP outings. That’s all over the backdrop of Bregman starting in a slump with Altuve/Brantley out. I think Dusty probably could’ve managed another win if he’d played Diaz more but otherwise it’s pretty standard shit aside from Bregmans slump.
  21. Assigning blame for the 6 losses so far: Garcia, Stanek, Brown, Stanek, Martinez/Bregman, Pressly/Montero/Bregman
  22. Whitley was apparently very good today. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/player-scroll/game?gamePk=721430&player_id=666215#power_sets Threw 5 different pitches. Sat 95-96 on his FB. Only allowed 4 hard hit balls and 2 were on the ground. Very encouraging
  23. The 2 moves I would have made that they didn’t were signing a catcher who can hit and adding a SP. My choices based on how the market played out would have been Omar Narvaez at C and Andrew Heaney or Mike Minor at P. Narvaez is out 2 months with an injury, Heaney got blown the fuck up in his first start, and Minor is still unsigned. So I’m glad I’m not the GM. The Astros ended the offseason with 6 hitters who projected to be extremely good and another 2 who performed well as everyday players last season, with their 9th projected everyday hitter being their defensive-minded C who apparently has incredible intangibles in gameplanning and pitcher management. Their bench projected a competition between 2 of their top 5 prospects for the backup C spot, their previous starting CF who is returning from injury, a utility player who is Dusty Baker’s son’s friend, and a wide open competition for the 13th spot (with Hensley in the pole position based on his playoff performance and versatility). Prior to Brantley and Altuve getting hurt, any criticism of their position player roster construction was picking nits or whining about the quality of the 12th and 13th guys. After Brantley and Altuve getting hurt, the pickings to replace them were extremely slim. The pitching side was similar. Prior to McCullers getting hurt, they projected 6 effective SP and 7 relievers returning from one of the best bullpens in league history, backed by a deep stable of SP slotted for AAA. Before McCullers got hurt the worst thing that could be said was that they didn’t have a proven lefty for the pen, but again that’s picking nits. No team can lose a player of Altuve’s importance without feeling it, so this team very well could be in a division dogfight after 50 games. But they have the depth and resources to weather it over the long haul. This team will be fine.
  24. If I have to hear this woman say “NOLE and void” one more fucking time, I’m gonna kill her and then myself.
