  1. Pena being able to hit 2nd just seems like it lengthens the lineup so much.
  2. Could this be a “supply recession” where GDP was stunted by supply shocks? If so I would think the fallout from that would be relatively mild, meaning not much increase in unemployment and a fairly quick recovery.
  3. I realized yesterday one thing that puts me off about holidays is that they all celebrate shit that happened in the past. They’re backward-looking and in many cases the shit they look back toward wasn’t nearly as good or as pure as we have been led to believe. I’d like it a lot more if the way we celebrated holidays was more focused on the general ideals associated with the holiday and a resolve to live up to them moving forward. I don’t think that’s how most people celebrate, at all. For most, 7/4 is a day to brag about back-to-back world war victories that happened over 60 years ago, and that kinda sucks. I am loyal to my country and have a lot of hope for a better future. This country is my home.
  4. Would not surprise me at all if Stehly and Kennedy came back. Hodo, Ardoin, and Melendez are gone. Faltine is probably gone but he does have a lot to gain if he comes back and his floor isn’t going to get much lower even if he comes back and doesn’t play well.
  5. I still believe Trump is going to run and will be the nominee. But one way or the other an obvious play for him if his time owning the GOP ends is to start his own party. MAGA, the first subscription-based political party. If Republicans want to keep him from destroying the party then they have to keep him in the fold until he’s dead. Best outcome for them is if they convince him not to run (likely by paying him). I refuse to let myself give into the hope that he will be jailed or dead in the next 30 months, but god please. PLEASE!
  6. Arch is going to be the baddest mf in history. Gilbert’s arm strength and athleticism with Colts competitiveness, accuracy, and decision making. We are not fucking around anymore.
  7. Went for a run for the first time since catching COVID. My household’s COVID timeline: 6/10: 3 year old sent home with fever. 6/11: 3 year old with 101-103 fever. I start feeling bad. 6/12: I feel like total shit. Wife starts feeling bad. Me and 3 year old test negative for COVID. 6/13-6/14: Wife and I feel like shit, 3 year old mostly better. 6 year old still well. All but 6 year old test positive for COVID. 6/16: 6 year old starts feeling bad. Wife and I start feeling better. 3 year old is well. 6/17: 6 year old to ER with 105+ fever. I go for a walk and have to stop to catch my breath every 1/4 mile (I usually run 3 miles ~twice a week). 6/18-6/20: 6 year old sick with fever 101-104. Wife and I mostly better but with lingering cough and fatigue. 6/22: 6 year old feels a lot better and hasn’t had fever since 6/20. Me and wife test “barely” positive. 3 year old tests negative. 6 year old tests positive. 6/23-6/26: Head to the coast. Stay to ourselves. Kids are well; 6 year old has minor stuffy nose that could just be allergies. Me and wife feeling better but still some minor lingering cough/congestion and fatigue. I feel well enough to drink a few beers on the beach on Friday and Saturday. 6/27: 6 year old tests negative. I feel “well” for the first time in 2 weeks, and go for a 3 mile run, feel mostly normal but can tell I’m out of shape. That shit was not cool.
  8. My guess is that the 3 silent commits are Err, Bah, and Dee.
  9. Who do we not get from this list: Baxter Cook Toviano Muhammad Matthews Williams Brooks Pilot Chatman Cojoe Hill Gulette Vasek Shelby Hicks
  10. I take heart in the fact that human population growth has slowed dramatically and projects to continue to go down. we are the problem and we appear to be taking care of the problem. I try to raise my kids to be a force for good in the world. I try to enjoy each day despite all the negative shit I’m aware of. (I mostly fail) I try to engage people with different view points to learn about them and influence them if they’re open to it. This has been mostly futile. I try to take breaks from the news. Smartphones are the fucking devil.
  11. I think there’s a lot can change in 2 years. But I do think the GOP presidential field will narrow to at most 4 over the next 18 months: 1. Trump. I still think he should be the odds favorite and I think he would lose to Biden again. 2. DeSantis (aka “Trump-lite”): he is positioning himself to get MAGA voters who abandon Trump while also seeming more palatable to non-Trump republicans. He is making his move now and it may be too early. He would likely beat Biden, but not handily. 3. Haley: Unlike DeSantis, she has managed to avoid fully buying into Trumpism, which I think makes her more palatable to moderates (or less extreme conservatives). And unlike more moderate options, she has managed not to fully alienate maga. I don’t think she’s made her move yet. I think she would beat Biden. 4. Sununu/Hogan/TBD: There’s certainly a significant group of gop voters who are anxious to leave Trumpism behind and return to more sane/moderate options. So there’s room for a candidate who presents as a gop return to normalcy. Unfortunately, the maga contingent very likely isn’t ready to concede so whoever this option ends up being very likely won’t be the nominee. I do think whoever this is would have the best odds against Biden.
  12. It does look very unlikely there will be a clean transition of GOP ownership from Trump to a successor. I can’t think of a legitimate option who hasn’t at least presented themselves as somewhat adversarial to Trump. DeSantis, Haley, and Pence were the most likely and they’ve all at least partially broken from him. His kids can’t be him. I’ve repeated a bunch that I think Trump was uniquely suited for that moment in 2015-2016 and I believe that more than ever.
  13. One way or the other, there will be a widely celebrated holiday related to Trump. Either this dystopian nightmare continues, in which case Presidents’ Day will be moved to his birthday. Or the world comes to its senses, and the day he dies will be celebrated every year.
  14. I have definitely soured on Texas (and Austin) but I’m also still infected with the hope that the pendulum will swing back toward sanity. That combined with my stage in life and family ties makes it extremely unlikely I will move anytime in the next 10 years. If things took an even more extreme turn then San Diego, CA is currently at the top of my unresearched list, followed by Kona, Hawaii, Galway, Ireland, and Sydney, Australia. In the meantime I am just trying to adjust my lifestyle to spend less time in public. I pretty much stopped going to port O’Connor for holiday weekends because of the unignorable Trumpism. I rarely go out in Austin because of the odd combo of homelessness and douchebaggery. And if I’m being honest I am not even sure I still enjoy the football games. Maybe I’m just a misanthrope. But we are putting a lot of money into our home in order to make it a place we never want to leave, and like I said I still maintain hope for better days.
  15. I would have thought so too, but cursory research returned that it is EXTREMELY rare for fever from infection to get over 106 and brain damage only occurs at 108+, which realistically only can happen if the ambient temperature is extremely high (like a kid being left in a hot car). It appears to be pretty general guidance not to worry too much about actual fevers 104-105, and treating those fevers is really only meant to curb the discomfort, not prevent any real danger. I think there’s a recent trend of healthcare professionals instructing parents to let fever run it’s course because it is thought that fever is helpful to fighting the infection, so treating lower grade fevers does more harm than good. We had 2 doctors and a PA tell us not to even treat her fever until it was 103+, and they indicated the delirium we saw was more a result of dehydration than the actual fever. Anyway, I didn’t really adhere to their advice and we gave her Motrin anytime she got to 101. She hasn’t had fever for the last 2 days so I think we are all on the mend. She has been having night terror type shit the last 3 nights which we assume is related to the COVID. My wife and I are still tired as fuck with a mild cough/congestion. This shit is definitely not “like a normal flu”. At least the 3 year old (only one unvaxxed) is all the way back to normal.
  16. Bolte is #35 in mlb.com’s list. He is not on Law’s or Fangraphs’ lists. It would be huge to get either Bolte or Flores.
  17. Your “overhire” point is something I am mildly surprised hasn’t already started happening. There is a tipping point where it makes more sense to overhire because the benefit has a compounding effect; over hiring lowers stress on all functional areas, breeds competition, and provides insurance against turnover. I think companies that have the foresight to do that will be winners over the next 2 decades. And one way I expect to see it is by employing boomers near/at retirement age in part time roles to supplement full time staff.
  18. Generally, employers have earned the contempt of workers by treating their employees as replaceable for decades. It’s very telling how many people in management/ownership roles appear to be longing for a deep recession and high unemployment so that they can turn the table back around and start treating people poorly again. Employees expecting flexible schedules, competitive pay, full bennies, and manageable workloads isn’t unreasonable. It’s been a long time coming.
  19. 3B Cambell 2B Daly RF Portal???? DH Skenes 1B Kash CF Kennedy SS O’Dowd LF Whitehead C Galvan With Skenes added, the everyday lineup seems just one guy away, and that’s assuming Bolte is lost to the draft.
  20. An elite 2 way player like Skenes potentially plugs 3 very big holes for Texas. A big bat, an elite weekend SP, and a player capable of catching (although I doubt he’d catch much at Texas, still a valuable skill that Texas might need to use in the postseason.
  21. Bolte, Flores, and Coffey are the 3 big risks.
  22. Current roster projection: C Galvan 1B Kash 2B Daly SS TBD 3B Campbell OF Whitehead OF Kennedy OF Bolte DH Thomas Bench: O’Dowd, Belyeu, Duplantier, TBD Weekend SP: Gordon, Harrison, TBD Other P: Stewart, Morehouse, Sthele, Nixon, Walbridge, Eckhardt, Johnson, Duplantier, TBD A lot of work to do on this roster but the portal should be good to Texas.
  23. Current predictions for contested senate races: NH: Hassan vs Bolduc: Hassan has tons more money than Bolduc and she should be able to hang on. NV: Masto vs Laxalt: Will be close but Masto has a lot more money and should barely squeak by. AZ: Kelly vs Lamar/Masters/Brnovich: Kelly is a good candidate and the GOP candidates are tearing each other up. Hard to see Kelly losing unless there’s election dispute shenanigans that let the state leg interfere. GA: Warnock vs Walker: if Warnock doesn’t win it’s the end of the world. Warnock is a normal, functioning human being. Walker is literally unable to speak coherently. PA: Fetterman vs Dr Oz: Fetterman is a good candidate and Oz is a very odd fit for the maga crowd (not to mention the senate in general). Fetterman should win handily unless he has more health problems. FL: Demings vs Rubio: It’ll be close but Rubio will hang on. OH: Ryan vs Vance: this currently shows leaning red but I think that GOP primary took a lot out of Vance. It will be close. For now smart money is on Vance but Ryan has a chance. UT: McMullin (IND) vs Lee: The Dems got behind McMullin and this race is tightening. Trump doesn’t appear to be all that popular in Utah. I like McMullin and so maybe I’m just pipe dreaming but I’m hopeful there’s a chance. Wouldn’t bet on it for now but it’s worth watching. WI: Barnes vs Johnson: Johnson is the incumbent and Trumpers will show up for him. Barnes is a decent candidate but not a moderate. Close but for now it’s looking like Johnson. NC: Beasley vs Budd: I don’t think Beasley has much of a chance here. So that tallies up to the Dems picking up one seat.
