  1. I am not a pro and am curious about this as well. I assume you just slowly move shit from the risky stuff into the conservative stuff. Most of my wealth is currently in stocks and real estate. I will talk to a pro eventually, but I assume when I get to the point of actually stopping working, I will hold 1 years expenses in cash/savings, 1-2 years worth in CDs, then 4-5 years worth in ETFs, and the rest (ideally 7-8 years worth of expenses minimum) in riskier stuff like individual stocks and real estate.
  2. Your wife’s pension really gives you more security than the average person, especially the average person retiring early. I think aggressive investing is fine, but people who do it better be prepared to make moves (reducing expenses and/or going back to work) to mitigate the downside.
  3. Houston is not trading Jake Meyers for Cody Bellinger. Meyers has been Houston’s 3rd most valuable position player so far this season and projects to be a 2-3 win player every year. He’s under team control through 2027. You don’t trade 4.5 seasons of a 2-3 player for 0.5 seasons of a…2-3 win player.
  4. My kids minds were blown when I told them we didn’t have AC in our home until I was in the 4th grade. But I reassured them it wasn’t this hot. This shit is crazy.
  5. $20K seems high to resurface right? I haven't started getting quotes so maybe not. Not sure what modernizing the drain means. My pool is quite old so it has a single drain. Apparently this is not up to current code because it is a safety hazard. Modern pools have 2 drains. This contractor told me that no insured company would resurface my pool without updating that single drain to a double. I am ignorant on all this but the way he explained it made sense to me.
  6. For information sharing purposes only, I had someone from Blue Haven pools come out to give me a quote on remodeling our pool. We are in SW Austin. He gave me back of the envelope quotes as follows: $45k to add a spa (includes adding propane gas line/tank/service) $20k to resurface the pool (includes modernizing the drain) $5k to add a tanning shelf $5k to replace my equipment and the shed covering it $15k to add a basic covered area on top of the existing patio slab next to the pool. That was in range of what I was expecting (even tho still probably north of what I am willing to spend right now), so I asked for a firm quote. He said he would get me a formal quote by the end of last week, I followed up on Thursday and got no response, so I assume he ghosted me. The hot tub cost is the only thing that was a lot more expensive than I expected. It sucks that shit I want costs so much.
  7. Inheritance is a big deal, and lots of people rely on it, but for me it’s too hard to predict all the factors that go into it to make any promises or count on it. That’s true for me on both sides; I believe my parents may have some assets remaining when they die because they are extremely frugal people and my dad saved well enough, but I am not counting on them leaving us anything at all. It just feels evil/morbid to think otherwise, and I really do hope they live long enough to spend everything they’ve saved/earned. Just the same, I fully plan to have enough wealth saved to be able to leave a significant inheritance to my kids, but I’m not going to promise them anything, because I’m not going know how much will be left until it’s too late, and I think it’s better for it to be a surprise than something they’re counting on.
  8. Ok here would be a hypothetical contributing lineup/roster for now: RF Thomas DH Powell* LF Brown* CF Cummings 3B Borba* 1B Sweeney 2B O’Dowd SS Flores C Galvan Bench: C Sanders, C Schuessler, OF Belyeu, IF Constantine, IF/OF Duplantier, IF Ardoin, IF O’Hara, OF Kennedy SP: TBD*, TBD*, Hurley, Sthele, Whitehead, Harrison, Tumis RP: Boehm*, Tole, Duplantier, Shaw, Morris*, Lummus, Selvig, Hamilton, Walbridge, Minchey, Grubbs
  9. Can Jared Thomas play the corner OF? That could fill an OF spot while opening up 1B for Sweeney.
  10. I think we finally catch a break in that Sykora and Gasparino are going to be the only recruits we lose to the draft. The infield and bullpen are going to be very good. They will be able to sort thru returning guys to find weekday/Sunday SP. If Porter Brown comes back they should be ok in the OF although I imagine they’ll be looking for 1 OF in the portal either way. Friday/Saturday SP is the thing that will determine how far they go; the portal will make or break next year’s expectations.
  11. LMFAO told that chick she could only ask a question about Israel if she let him run her over. My man.
  12. One thing I have been thinking more about as I age is how different things are for older people trying to re-enter the workforce. It’s the real risk underneath retiring early; you think “I can always go back to work”, but if you are 50+ I don’t think that is universal. I do think there will be a shortage of workers for at least the next 20 years, so being able to find some source of income is pretty likely, but I do think there’s quite a lot of jobs (sales, professional services, technology, many others) that if you are over 50 and have been out of the game for 5+ years, it might be very difficult to find even part time work in the same role/field. I am in that type of role, so as I prepare for early retirement, I am preparing as if there is no way I will be able to go back and make big salaries ever again if things don’t go as planned. My worst case scenario backup plan will involve proactively finding part time work that is easy to get but doesn’t pay near what I am making now. But I am setting my number high enough so that outcome is incredibly unlikely. It’s just become more of a concern as I see people treating me differently as I transition from up-and-coming young gun to established middle aged resource.
  13. I don’t understand how anyone thinks that the shit being decided in the state where he has the most ardent supporters by a judge he appointed has any chance of resulting in a relatively bad outcome for Trump. I don’t see any chance whatsoever this prevents him from getting the GOP nomination and I don’t at all see this being the deciding factor in whether or not he wins the general election. Once J6 happened and he survived politically, it was clear that truth and morality are no longer playing a role.
  14. My wife: “Try this chai pudding I made.” Me, trying the pudding: “Not bad, what all is in this?” Wife: “Milk, cocoa powder, chai seeds, sugar. That’s it.” Me: “Chai seeds?” Wife: “Yep.” Me: “Chai seeds? Like, C-H-A-I seeds?” Wife, laughing, like I’m the dumbass: “No, like C-H-I-A seeds.” Me: “Hm. Cool. Anyway, it’s not bad.”
  15. I was out of town this past weekend. I intentionally don’t take much time away from my family, maybe 4-6 days (2-3 weekends) each year since my 7 year old was born, so my girls are not used to me being gone. On Monday when I walked into daycare/summer camp to pick them up, my 4 year old was for some reason not expecting me (even though I told them before I left that I would pick them up on Monday), and reacted as if I was a military homecoming surprise after an 18 month deployment. Screaming “DADDY!!!” and pushing kids out of the way and shit as she sprinted across the room to jump into my arms, then holding my face in her hands and smothering me with kisses. Being a parent often sucks, the stressburger that comes with it tastes like shit. But those moments bring emotional highs that I just can’t believe you can get anywhere else.
  16. We can’t live in fear of Russia firing off a nuke because they lost a war they started by invading another sovereign nation. Yes, it is a major risk. But it cannot force the world to capitulate to Russia. That would be never ending. We just have to hope that the knowledge that firing a nuke means the end of Russia and everyone in it works as a preventative even for really stupid/crazy mf.
  17. Something can be crazy without being surprising. Trumps a fuckin loser. His political brand is in obvious decline. It is insane that no one is working effectively to take advantage of that.
  18. It is crazy to me that there isn’t a single serious moderate candidate throwing their hat in the ring for the GOP nomination. So far we have: Trump DeSantis, who is playing to the hard right of Trump Trumps VP (Pence) Trumps UN Ambassador (Haley) One of Trumps early prominent ardent supporters who worked on his 2016 campaign (Christie) A senator who has consistently gargled Trumps nutsack (Tim Scott) Who does that leave? Asa Hutchinson? Wtf. I guess it makes sense now that Hogan and Sununu have been ruled out, not sure who would even qualify? Marco Rubio?
  19. I have a hard time seeing us take 31 kids in this class lol
  20. Ok so the dream class would look something like: QB (1): Owens RB (2): Gibson, Clark WR (3): Hudson, Livingstone, Wingo TE (1): Washington OL (4): Cruz, Saina, Uini, Ivy DL (4): Simmons, Umeozulu, January, Okoye LB (3): Williams, Smith, Mothudi DB (3): Black, Bridges, Johnson-Rubell P (1): Kern ATH (3): Bussey, Maddon, Hampton
  21. Starters (5): Hunter, Abmas, Mitchell, Disu, Shedrick Bench (4): Weaver, Cunningham, Onyema, Anamekwe Walk-ons (4): Perryman, Clark, Bott, Prince Thats a really good roster. Legit 8 deep with upside to be 9 deep. Maybe add a guard who can drain 3s or be a defensive stopper, but that would be gravy. Should be a Sweet 16 team as-is.
  22. Belyeu will also contribute, I missed him.
  23. I see us as just needing 2 weekend SP and 2 OF if things go as expected. The 2 OF should be pretty easy to get but the market for quality SP is thin, so that could be a big ask. If they just get one then the lineup should still be good enough to carry them to at least the regional but if they get 2 then the sky is the limit. My current guess of a list of who will contribute: Catcher: Galvan, Schuessler, Sanders IF: Thomas, O’Dowd, Flores, Powell, Daly, Borba, Ardoin, Kennedy OF: Sweeney, Duplantier, TBD, TBD SP: TBD, TBD, Hurley, Morehouse, Sthele, Harrison RP: Whitehead, Duplantier, Tole, Lummus, Stuart, Shaw, Boehm, others I expect the bullpen and infield to be excellent. SP and OF will determine how good we are.
