  1. It’s not always bullshit, here just a few historical examples: Texas couldn’t leave aggy for the SEC back in the late 80s and then had to take Tech as a tagalong when we tried going to the Big8. Virginia Tech got into the ACC over Syracuse (who was the first choice) due to politics, and the only reason UNC isn’t suing the ACC currently is also politics. Alabama and Auburn were forced to play each other after 40 years due to the state legislature which is why even 60 years later, Auburn remained in the SEC West after adding two members West of the Mississippi River, and Missouri ended up in the SEC East despite being West of the majority of SEC West members. The State of Louisiana blocked the University of Louisiana from upgrading to FBS for year and then only allowed it if they changed their branding to Louisiana Lafayette and also upgraded along with Northeast Louisiana who they made them change their branding to Louisiana Monroe so people wouldn’t think ULL was the flagship over LSU and because Louisiana Tech was worried about being perceived as a weaker football program in the state. Just because it’s not 100%, doesn’t mean it’s not real.
  2. Then they have to play them. Not easy to kick members out. They want Utah St and UNLV but don’t want to pay that ridiculous penalty for poaching them. UConn gets them to 8 temporarily, and once that penalty expires they can poach for free and then kick out UConn since they are not a full member.
  3. The schedule was made based on winning percentage in SEC conference games (Big 12 for UT/OU) Texas face 4 teams in the top half of the SEC in winning percentages from 2012-2022: UGA, OU, UF, aggy aggy faces 4 as well: LSU, UF, Texas, Auburn OU faces four as well: Bama, LSU, Texas, Auburn The major difference in the schedule, which is impossible to take into account is which team that is normally good is not so good (UF/Aub are bad, OU/aggy/LSU are questionable) and which team that is normally not so good is having a good year (Mizzou, Ole Miss, Tennessee). Other than Auburn and maybe LSU, the top teams on Oklahoma’s schedule are still good and they caught all the not so good teams peaking at the wrong time. Other than UGA, Texas does not have any of the other historically good teams firing on all cylinders, and all the not so good teams are still not so good. The methodology is sounds and not biased, even if the outcome is unequal, but unless you’re making the schedule only 6 months in advance, it’s impossible to have balanced schedules.
  4. Yes, Air Force wants the money, UNLV agreed in principle because it puts it out there that time is ticking. SJSU, Wyoming, Reno and New Mexico ain’t getting invites. These 4 schools are pushing the other 3 for their commitment because its the only way it could force the PAC12 to merge with them. A full merger is the only way those four will be invited. If the PAC12 gets to 8 members then the game is over. UConn football is just a bargaining chip. It’s a short term filler to get them to 8 fb teams with Utah State. They could use Hawaii but they’d have to pay the MWC a fee for them. They’d have to get a basketball team but there are some easy options out there if they can’t land Gonzaga.
  5. TV market, recruiting, competitiveness. They’ve moved out of the basement and are now a solid program over the last five years or so. New Mexico, Nevada-Reno, and Hawaii have been the recent stinkers. Utah St, UNLV, and San Jose fit the mold of what the other PAC schools are. edit: 5 years
  6. This is really the best option now, if they can’t get Memphis and their pals. WSU/OSU just need to accept their new place in the MWC and enjoy their $100 million payout.
  7. They aren’t choosing to stay. They politically have trouble leaving Nevada-Reno. Rumor is Reno stopped investing in athletics after they got the MWC invite and has done next to nothing to improve. That has irritated the MWC members so they don’t want to invite them and UNLV can’t easily leave them. If the PAC gets to 7, I assume they would give UNLV an ultimatum, join now or never, which might give them enough cover to leave Reno. I’d bet if they stay on this path that UNLV will be #8.
  8. Once the others declare their intent to leave they can’t vote to dissolve. The only way they get out of the fees now is if they do a full merger. Also San Jose State is a VERY attractive member. The only reason they likely weren’t included is that they think they might get Cal and Stanford back who would NOT want to share a conference with SJSU who they think is basically a JUCO.
  9. Mississippi State is one of only three teams in the SEC that Texas does NOT have a winning record against. Can you guess the other two?
  10. Sounds like they did all of this just to get away from Nevada-Reno (because apparently they have just stopped investing as much in athletics after they got the MWC invite) and San Jose St (because they think they have a one in a million chance at getting Cal or Stanford back). New Mexico and Wyoming are well liked institutions but in small markets which probably hurt their projected per school payout from a new TV deal. No one seems to have an issue with Air Force at all, and they could drop Hawaii at anytime since they are not a full member. So the PAC12 is paying out around $200 million in order to get rid of 4 members only a single one of which the other teams seem not to like. WSU/OSU could have joined the MWC and kept that $100 million windfall and had the best facilities and NIL in the conference for the next decade and keep them in conversation annually for a playoff spot that could possibly turn into a P4 invite… But instead, they chose this rebuild the PAC12 path where they will pay out a bunch of money to “lesser” schools and be in a conference of their peers that will have more motivated fan/donor support while WSU/OSU fans/alumni are still sad and unmotivated, which in turn will push WSU/OSU to the middle of the pack where they fall into even further obscurity. Which would have been the better investment?
  11. IIRC (and I could be a bit out of date but I’m not going to look these up manually) AAC $11 million per school MWC $ 8 million per SBC/MAC $3 million CUSA $2 million edit: used ChatGPT and updated my numbers which were close enough
  12. The MWC will likely have nearly $200 million in exit fees to distribute. I assume Air Force would likely want their share of that money before they bolt. They already play Army/Navy every year so no real reason to rush. If the American conference is holding together, then the PAC will go after Utah State first as their 7th members, then offer UNLV the final 8th spot in hopes that gives them enough cover the breakaway from Nevada-Reno. That would put the PAC12 at 8 teams: Boise St, Colorado St, Fresno St, Oregon St, San Diego St, UNLV, Utah St, and Washington St Then the Mountain West would be down to 5 full members plus Hawaii football only: Air Force, Nevada-Reno, New Mexico, San Jose St, Wyoming, and Hawaii football They need to add 3 full members, 2 of which must have football. UTEP and New Mexico St are the obvious candidates but the MWC has been dismissive of them for the last 20 years so they may think they are “too good” for them. But then again, beggars can’t be choosers. FCS Sacramento State University has been lobbying for a spot as they want to move to FBS. I also assume (if Utah St is truly gone) that WAC FCS schools Utah Tech (formerly Dixie St) and Southern Utah might get a look too. There might be a non football school like Utah Valley which could be added to offset Hawaii if they want to keep their membership/footprint tight.
  13. They have a large corporate sponsor with FedEx and their NIL game is one of the best in the G5. I mean outside of the service academies, who else East of Texas really moves the football needle now in the G5: USF…Tulane…East Carolina??? Just not a lot of great options.
  14. Houston does not belong in that meme.
  15. Huge Colt fan, but they shouldn’t have him headlining major games yet. He needs a lot of polish.
  16. It’s hard to prove a negative, but this is the only thing I can find about Herby calling a game remotely, from when he got COVID. https://sports.yahoo.com/kirk-herbstreit-to-work-from-home-in-week-4-after-coming-in-contact-with-someone-who-had-covid-19-202202951.html and here’s a thread on some of his standard travel https://athlonsports.com/college-football/big-ten/kirk-herbsteit-travel-college-gameday-schedule-fans-react-south-bend
  17. I don’t think you’re right on this one. They’ve shown the crazy lengths they have gone to in order to get Herby from College Gameday on the West Coast to an East Coast game multiple times (police escorts, private plane, helicopters). I’m not saying it never has happened (like during Covid perhaps) but I don’t think it’s anything they do “all the time”. I believe ESPN might do this for lesser conferences on ESPN+ but not SEC or premier B12/ACC games.
  18. FS1 not sending announcer to the stadiums, they are working remotely from a central location. Treating Big 12 games like they treat MWC games. Fox is pretty much telling the Big 12 how they think about them. https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/college/asu/2024/09/21/arizona-state-football-fans-slam-fs1-remote-broadcast-texas-tech/75329197007/
  19. It was scheduled before they were conferencemates. Same for Baylor/Utah. They couldn’t reschedule with another P4 level opponent on such a short turnaround so they decided to leave the game scheduled but not count them as conference games.
  20. Yep they had Utah v Oklahoma State. A ranked v ranked matchup that could decide the entire Big 12 conference where they also could talk about the new conference alignments. It seemed like such an easy decision that they totally flubbed because they wanted to suck some bucknuts.
  21. The noon on ESPN is good for them. They get the 230 on FOX by default as FOX can’t broadcast any Big Ten at that time because they gave CBS an exclusive window. And the late window is something they will have each week with 5 team in the Mountain Time Zone. The SEC has 3 games back to back to back on ABC, one on ESPN at 230, and 2 on the SECN. This is basically the new norm for both the SEC and Big 12. The big loser here is the ACC. They have only a Friday night game on ESPN, then Clemson is the sacrificial lamb on ESPN opposite UGA/Bama, then they only have one game on ESPN2, one on the CW, 3 on the ACCN, and one streaming…on top of that Louisville’s ranked v ranked game against Notre Dame is only on Peacock.
  22. NEXT WEEK Okie St/K State 11am on ESPN Colorado/UCF 230 on FOX AZ/Utah late on ESPN everything else on FS1/ESPN2 other than Kansas/TCU is streaming only.
  23. That’s fine, we’ll get it back on 10/20.
