  1. More than you wanted to know about that. https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/R/R44707
  2. It wasn't based on "unflattering data points." Those came out later. It was pure-dee racism and a threat to the mediocre white man order. Similarly, you can't justify criticism of the BLM protests because their "leaders" are minor-league shitstains. The movement itself was righteous, as was King's. Both of them ignited a public dialog about the subject of their protests and MLK's with landmark legislation. There's not been any landmark legislation as a result of BLM, but it's definitely under discussion.
  3. I have, by and large, changed my tune on unions. I remain somewhat skeptical of government employee unions. Unlike the private sector, government is not really known for abusing employees, and there are other means that can be used to exert upward wage/benefit pressures. I'm willing to entertain discussion on it.
  4. Amusing thing. I have had one argument before the Texas Supreme Court. The argument that preceded mine concerned whether the administrative suspension of a driver's license that coincides with arrest for DWI was a violation of due process. So, the lawyer that was arguing it was some poor schlub misdemeanor criminal defense lawyer with little appellate experience, especially outside criminal law. He wasn't bad by any stretch, but just . . . so . . . casual about the whole thing.
  5. I think another aspect of this is that, rather than seeking children in the first place, they believe or are led to believe that faith can conquer their predilections. I don't believe Catholics explicitly teach this, nor do mainstream Prod denominations. Catholics do "offer" celibacy, which may be attractive, while fundagelicals tend to believe and evangelize that faith can conquer anything, and, indeed that such "deviations" (real and perceived) are the result of inadequate faith.
  6. Let's not forget that presidential track record on budget deficit explosions.
  7. Because they don't give a fuck. Actual job performance means nothing if it doesn't toe the MAGA line. There's no guarantee, and an absolute likelihood, that MAGA replacements will suck shit through a straw, and also orange man's crank.
  8. Has anyone checked out Whitehouse.gov? Just the landing page?
  9. Fair nough. My knowledge of such things is outdated. My law school roommate did insurance defense way back in the day that included a lot of car wreck cases. And I knew Brian Loncar somewhat well outside of strictly professional settings and learned some of the business from him. He may have been a schock jock, but from all of my interaction with him, he was a pretty authentic, sincere dude that cared about getting his clients their due. Then again, once you can fake sincerity, you've got it made. He was definitely a volume shop and employed a lot of adjusters/former claims reps that he said were quite profitable and did good work for their clients.
  10. Aren't car wreck firms a little cheaper than that if they don't have to file suit? Decades ago, the "multiples" In Dallas County, at least, that is what extra percentage over out-of-pocket medicals juries tended to award so insurers would come close to paying out pretty easily justified even a 33% contingency. Meaning, for OP and others, if you could submit legit out-of-pocket medicals of X, a Dallas County jury would award 2x+ plus property damage. So you'd still come out pretty far ahead with a skilled insurance negotiator from a PI firm. It is my understanding that the multiples have narrowed, so that may be less true than it was.
  11. It may well be dying, but it has more intrinsic value in the sense you just specified, than all the rest combined. There is some damned good discussion and information in here.
  12. Well, it's not really that dumb because a lot of right-wingers feel free to dog-whistle, at best, in DT alleged news threads. But they're afraid to come into CR and get pantsed in their counter-factual and otherwise ill-informed opinions. And then they whinge about their Fox news sound-bites not being given equal time or debated or some shit.
  13. Well, Fox is now considered "news," so what the fuck do you expect. Reaping, sowing, kinda how that works.
  14. Brisket is a really terrific writer, especially when it comes to these sorts of things. A lot of us know the rules like psycho grammar Nazis (ie me), but brisket has a real talent for conveying humanity and emotion. Also, the signs were there, but I didn't notice until now that Brisket was another only child, like me. The rift with his father I think is something all of us go through to a greater degree or another, but I think it's worse for only children. I never had the temerity to have a single, sort of hard rift with my father or either of my parents: I was too awed by them and frankly scared of them. It probably would have done me good to have a hard adolescent or teen rift instead of the kind of simmering, passive-aggressive rift that we had.
  15. That's actually about 1000x more empathic than I would have expected from him.
  16. Staying at rehab six months shows something. Even though he doesn't have a regular-type job to go to, he's a semi-famous performer guy, which bespeaks a good amount of humility to stay six months.
  17. I know you're gone, but what about 1/6 "protestors" and anti-abortion protestors? You good with the 1/6 pardons?
  18. His unemployment numbers are gonna go to shit.
  19. Cops come and try to snatch they crops.
  20. This can be a revelatory thing for a lot of people. And it's in tension with the notion that your feelings deserve respect. They do, but they often don't deserve action or even to exist for long. It seems absurd, but if you can reach a point where you can just dismiss negative and intrusive thoughts, like literally "go away," that seems to be a turning point. Exactly how you get there can be another thing entirely. For example, the last time I got sober, I finally got to a point where I'd walk by the cooler case full of beer and think "fuck you" instead of having cravings, or anxiety. It's a bit like observing something dangerous or repulsive, just "nope." This has occurred to a greater or lesser extent with a lot of negative thinking patterns. I guess a big part of it is just recognizing it for what it is. It's like you pick it up, examine it, and determine whether it's useful or not and discard it if not.
  21. Also, this is so, so important for the bereaved to bear in mind with elderly loved ones.
  22. Oh, Donald cares tremendously about public opinion, even if he's not standing for election.
  23. Femtosecond called and wants its money back.
  24. No no, I was told that the adults are now in charge. @realgreggym Fucking cunt.
