  1. Hell, Jerry Brown is one of the finest statesman in US history. Just finished “The Browns of California” by Miriam Pawell and highly recommend it if you’re into CA history, btw. I see Newsom’s narrative as something like Tommy Carccetti’s from The Wire. Young, douchey ambitious guy who gets into politics for all the wrong reasons (which is to say, the usual ones) and through age, experience and quite a bit of public embarrassment matures to recognize the gravity of his public service. I genuinely think he’s a good guy. You’ll hear stories around SF about his hooker and blows days when he was mayor, and while they may very well be apocryphal folks agree that would have been on brand at the time. But nowadays I’ve also seen him doing unannounced cleanups in the Tenderloin, and by all accounts he does it just for the sake of it. I think he feels strongly in his need to carry on Brown’s progress to lead the world’s 5th largest economy and address inequality, climate change and the housing crisis, but can’t help but ponder how he could fill in the vacuum in Dem leadership. But a rich white guy from California who checks all the limousine liberal boxes and used to have a coke/Guilfoyle problem? I mean I think he’d be great personally but c’mon.
  2. Eh, I tend to believe his claim that he’s less than zero percent interested.
  3. Saffron is outstanding. Brothers III as well.
  4. Fuck Mitt Romney, fuck Liz Cheney, and most of all, fuck Dick Cheney.
  5. Truckee became SF east over the pandemic, almost as expensive too. Guerneville is very LGBTQ friendly though.
  6. Ultramarine, imo. Would absolutely not pay for it at retail or at a restaurant, but at allocation price ($70) the rose holds up well against grower champagne in that price range. 2017 drinking well right now.
  7. Sotto Mare is a great choice for the classic North Beach experience. If you can’t get in, recommend Betty Lou’s (actually a break off from Sotto Marre, better food but not the ambience) or Tosca Cafe (great cocktails, little more upscale). Regardless, you should go to Gino and Carlo, a classic NB dive bar, while you wait. edit: Trattoria Contadina great as well but pretty hard without a rez.
  8. SCOTUS sure as shit can.
  9. All these Texas visitors have brought great weather, not much June gloom at all this year. SF showing off today.
  10. Not seeing pics of Swan’s.
  11. Yeah, but he’s also equivocating stomping down fifty years of advancement in women’s rights with ending segregation. So fuck him.
  12. On brand.
  13. Would actually strongly disagree objectively, but yes agree that’s literally true as it’s his perception. He won’t go anywhere.
  14. I have noticed that most native Californians I know have considered leaving, for obvious reasons. Unlike transplants, they invariably stay because family and, well, California, but also they fear if they leave they’ll never afford to return.
  15. Welcome! You just missed 90s in the city, otherwise a spectacular summer so far with no June gloom in sight.
  16. Congrats, where in the Bay? Your dilemma is a common one.
  17. Lol no he pays >$3k a month, that’s just the sad math everyone does at that point.
  18. Jon Tester, Kay Hagan, Blanche Lincoln, Mark Pryor. Idk about that.
  19. Probably just due to hurricane season. Aftermath of Ida dragged out a month last year.
  20. Now we’re talking. But that’s probably a little too far for tourists. I didn’t mean to start a redwoods fight, but I just find SF tourism confusing in that many of the tourist places are adjacent to superior places but are inexplicably absent of tourists. I love people experiencing my city, but just wish they could experience the best of it. Like, Ghirardelli Square is packed, but Ft Mason is just over the hill. There are mobs at Lombard Street, but a few blocks over Ina Coolbrith offers arguably the best view of the city. Battery Spencer and the whole Hawk Hill drive? Avoid the traffic and hike off Rodeo Beach. Muir Woods is certainly beautiful when not crowded, but as someone who hikes Marin weekly it’s not where I go for my redwoods fix.
  21. Yes, this is long but regardless of what you think about the argument, it completely captures the factual background that led to the recall. Nellie Bowles pissed off a lot of folks in town with this (mainly because she’s married to Bari Weiss), but shes’s native a San Franciscan and Californian aristocracy and this has carried a lot of weight.
  22. You become a California snowflake so quickly, right? I always feel bad about whining about 70+.
  23. I don’t know that any sports bars will let a minor in, but I think they can sit outside if the bar has a parklet. Original Joe’s in NB should have the game though, they have a good bar area for game watching.
