  1. I gotta be honest, I didn’t expect them to convert that 3rd down.
  2. I’m teaching a world music class this semester. We’ve been looking at music in religious practices and have checked out some pretty wild ones. Next time I teach the class I need to look into a snake handling service - all those cymbals.
  3. For one brief, beautiful run, Shaggy was the worldwide leader for sports and scat talk. Then the scat bros and sports bros couldn’t coexist and those of us in the middle were the real losers.

    Classical Music Thread

Regarding Gould, he was a fascinating classical music communicator. Here he is taking about Bach and Hindemith and then playing Hindemith with a former UT music professor: Speaking of great communicators, if you have about six hours, the Bernstein Norton lectures are thought provoking. The musical/linguistic ideas he discusses turned out to be mostly nonsense at least taken as literally as he does, but it’s still worth the time to think about. Lecture 1:
  6. This is a fundamentally dishonest post. You should be better. Calling what’s happening here, in this community, “being mean” isn’t honest. Calling for “war” isn’t being mean. It’s the stuff of Russian trolls or those radicalized by Russian trolls. If you’re justifiable anger has been inflamed enough that this seems reasonable, check your media consumption. Charlie Strong was a terrible coach, but dead on about social media. This is an emotional, and possibly terrifying event. There are firm ways to deal with it without making everything worse. Whatever happened to the Biden real talk on MAGA fascism? That was great. The false dichotomy of either “start a war” or roll over is dishonest. Your post also isn’t grounded in reality. You don’t stop a civil war by starting a civil war. This is insane. Be mean, call them terrorists, arrest them, arrest their leaders and cheerleaders, and make Fox News lose its mind, but that’s not what happened here. Man gets MAGA radicalized in some MAGA forum and attempts to assassinate the Speaker. Surley poster: hey guys let’s all kill red hats. Other surley posters: totally cool. We’re just some online forum anyway.
  7. Not equivalent, obviously, and no one has said as such. But definitely on the same team. We can’t make Trump and friends stop terrorizing, but we can police our own community.
  8. Agreed. A poster here called for war on the red hats. He’s part of the same side as the red hat who tried to assassinate Pelosi.
  9. 1. MAGA terrorists should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. 2. This should extend to those playing the Charles Manson/Osama Bin Laden roles in the MAGA movement. 3. While these events are unnerving and justifiably emotional, calling for a preemptive civil war on red hats — as has been done in recent pages — only makes things worse. Violence leads to move violence; dehumanization leads to more dehumanization; down the drain we go. 4. These kinds of calls for violence, enflaming passions, dehumanizing your neighbors, are either the work of Russian bots or Americans propagandized by Russian bots. Check your news sources and what’s informing your emotions and opinion. 5. The scope and reach of MAGA Bin Ladens is astronomically greater than a message board poster frustrated by bad football, but it’s all the same destructive framework. This isn’t “both sides” but rather an acknowledgment of what’s actually pushing us over the brink.

    Kanye

Revealing my ignorance here: is Ye pronounced “yee” or “yay?” I’ve never actually heard it spoken since I actively avoid situations like that. In my head it’s “yee “ but “yay” makes more sense as a shortened version of his name.

    QB Slide Rule

Install a flare gun in the QB’s uniform. Whenever the QB wants to give himself up, he just shoots off the flare. It’s clear and unambiguous.
  12. If we extended the window to three weeks, we could get both an expedited execution and a solid week of torturing. Win-win.
  13. Most Ted Talks are for people who feel like they are smart and want to be reminded that the feel like they’re smart. It feels good to feel like a smart person.
  14. Early voting started today in GA. I had an unexpected break and voted. Does this mean I don’t have to see any more ads about the violent liar the Rs are running for senate?
  15. Chase, Rocky, Sky, Everest, Marshall.
  16. I was busy and only caught the end of it. I missed the absurdity of the police badge. From what I saw, Walker was better than expected — not good at all, but relatively coherent. He marginally exceeded my depressingly low expectation. I wasn’t a fan of the non-answers from Warnock, but he’s been a good senator and good leader. My Mondays are booked up, but I’ll be voting for him Tuesday morning. The fact that they felt the need to have a no prop rule, much less enforce it, seems sad to me. Maybe it’s SOP for debates, but it still makes me sad.
  17. Since the topic of retaliation and responding to bad behavior has come, Jesus may have had an opinion, even for the fake world that is online. Also, the Christ-followers thread seems sorely lacking in Christ’s words. Matthew 5: 38 You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Love for Enemies 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?Are not even the tax collectors doing that?47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
  18. The life cycle of a shaggy/surly faith-based thread. 1. Discussion centered around faith, the personal challenges of life, and persisting through a difficult world. 2. Everyone hates each other as we “discuss” the latest culture war issue. We are currently here. 3. A 3 post, 37 page discussion of ontology. There’s a bonus stage that happens during stage two if we lose to OU where drunken death threats are exchanged. Pray to god of your understanding that we cover the spread on Saturday. If stage two is upsetting to you, know that we’ll soon be engrossed in a discussion of the nature of being that none of us really understand. Let your heart not be troubled; dissension will eventually yield to confusion.
  19. The argument about Hans’ ascent is that: 1. It was late relatively speaking. According to the report, elite chess players reach GM at a younger age than Hans did. They essentially claim that if you haven’t made GM by early teenage years, you won’t reach the very top. 2. It was uneven, with several plateaus. According to the report, other rising elite players show a smoother ascent without the plateaus. I don’t know enough about chess to assess the veracity of the claim, but it doesn’t really align with other fields. Many/most elite athletes were dominant as youngsters, but there are many examples of late bloomers. I work in music; there are many elite musicians who were child prodigies, but there are also many late bloomers working at a high level. It makes sense to me that if Hans became as obsessed as he claimed and worked as hard as he says, he may have made the leap. I don’t see why chess would be so different than any other field to make such growth so implausible. That said, there’s a lot of smoke and now it looks like they’re scanning for anal beads, so what do I know.
  20. Regarding “hate the sin, love the sinner,” even my good deeds are filled with selfishness and sin. Isaiah 64:6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. Regarding some sins being “inherent,” they all are. Romans 7:18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
