  1. Thanks Pops. I should have been more specific - Ritz is at Rancho Mirage, which I think (?/?) is close to Palm Desert
  2. Sometimes more is better The studio edited his “Once Upon a Time in America” and that version is crap. The longer cuts released later are pretty awesome, though long Same with his “Fistful of Dynamite” (aka “Duck You Sucker”), which the studio cut. The director’s cut released years later restored scenes that added a lot to the story (and explained some things)
  3. Wife and I are heading there in 3 weeks — never been. Recs on things to do? Staying at Ritz. Golf choices through Ritz (will play 2 rounds) are Indian Wells, Shadow Ridge, Desert Springs or Desert Willow. Any recommendations? Restaurants. — Will do the Edge Steakhouse at the Ritz. Others that look good are Workshop, Birba, Copley’s and Adobe Grill in La Quinta. But I am just going off menus and reviews. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance
  4. I’ll give you that, but then you have to give me The Wild Bunch, Ballad of Cable Hogue, and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid,
  5. Truckee is great, but on the opposite end of Lake Tahoe
  6. This. Peckinpah was awesome when he was on (and kinda bad when he wasn't). Not a traditionalist, however.
  7. That’s really weird. We are Platinum on Marriott, but everything I read said SPG points and status would transfer. We have no issues at the old “SPG” hotels, either. Also, our SPG points transferred over. Did you do an account merge?
  8. Yeah — I should have put that Ranch 616 isn’t “upscale” as far as the look, but it is elevated Texas cuisine.
  9. Jeffrey’s Lonesome Dove Fixe (though more Southern than Texas) Ranch 616

    Sonos thread

Just got a Playbase and sub -- good sound, very easy to use. About to add the 2 rear speakers as well
  11. Not so much. Ford was great, but he also put out some contract studio crap. Welles was a tragic genius, who instead of playing along with the studios was constantly stifled by the studios. Both great, but I wouldn’t be so fast to elevate Ford.
  12. You’re right. I took a loom at IMDB to remind me of what he did after. He was OK in Get Shorty and A CIvil Action, and pretty much uniformally bad in everything else
  13. No idea. He was passed over repeatedly when he should have won — (1) The Hustler (2) Hud (3) Cool Hand Luke (and The Verdict)
  14. Ben Kingsley winning for “Gandhi” over Paul Newman for “The Verdict” Criminal...
  15. Meat looks awesome, but you could use a sharper knife...
  16. So....you mean they are everything we aren’t?
  17. Don’t know if you’ve booked yet, but we booked last weekend by transferring AMEX point to Air France — 1 point to 1 mile ratio. We got 2 round trip nonstop business class from DFW to CDG for 224,000 points (with taxes and airport fees we paid about $1000 total). Same trip on AMEX points (has we tried that) was over 3x the number of points.
  18. Heading from Austin to see Brooks & Dunn Staying at the JW by the Galleria. Hitting Cafe Annie for early HH/food before heading over. Staying the next day and going to Killen’s STQ
  19. This is Round 2. Gatti's was in bankruptcy back in the 80s as well.
  20. Actually, I like the concise stats. The “Fire Shaka Smart” thread is fine, but unless you want to read hundreds ofposts, which are mainly just continuing complaints (not bad posts, it’s just there is a lot to complain about) and a few people who somehow continue to think he’s a good coach trying to argue about why he should stay Thanks for posting
  21. Yeah, Pappas is great (so is B & B, which isn’t’t too far). The STQ menu looked interesting. Was thinking it would let me try Killen’s (never been to any of the restaurants) without going to Pearland.
  22. Going to be in the Galleria area. For a couple of reasons, I don’t want to drive to Pearland. How is Killen’s STQ?
  23. HL is just outside the Howell AVA (like a couple of others, like Wicker, that are literally across the road). Great wine. The tasting room is in St. Helena, however. We did a tasting at the vineyard a couple of years ago, but only because someone knew someone; they don't generally do tastings there.
