Trump is the 2024 GQP nominee. That's happening, there's no room for debate, nothing will stop it. He could be charged, tried, and convicted of the most horrific crimes imaginable, as he gleefully admits "fuck yeah I raped and murdered a baby!", and he still waltzes to the nomination.
Trump's entire defense strategy is this: win the White House. All of his convictions would at most be up on appeal, so he won't be in a prison anywhere. Pardon himself (or at the very least, argue that no criminal proceeding against him can advance while he is POTUS -- impeachment is the only remedy, and we know the GQP senators will never vote to convict). Pardon everyone else implicated. THEN, do exactly what he accuses the DOJ of doing: he'll absolutely weaponize it, and use it to go after every political enemy, real or imagined.
Trump's defense plan is to win the White House.
The Republic's plan for survival is to never let him back into the White House.
4th and 5 coming up.....it's up to all of us to play the role of VY.
I would actually argue that it's 4th and 1 and we're not sure if Bush or White is going to get the ball. We have to stop them to have any chance to win, but stopping doesn't guarantee shit. We have to fucking execute after the stop. Even if Biden wins in 2024, "victory" is not assured without a lot of effort. It just stops the sure loss.

I'm actually an extremely intelligent person that is quick to call bullshit on all kinds of conspiracies. The fact that I ardently believe in a lot of this shit should key y'all in that this is something you should look into.
This is good to know. Most people who believe in conspiracy theories tell everyone that they are really dumb and gullible. The fact that you are letting us know straight out that this isn't the case for you is helpful. It must be why you carry a lot of weight on this site.

I'm not sure. Just referring him to saying our galaxy vs. the universe. How many planets do you need for life? Is a billion not enough but a trillion is? Only point I was making.
I also am not entirely steadfast in the belief that whatever UFOs are are actually from a different planet. My intrigue with the time-travel and inter-dimensional theories oscillates (granted I think the time travel one is the most far fetched).
You said it was relevant. If you're not sure how it's relevant I don't think it's relevant. I can't speak for AOC but the point I am trying to make is I have know idea of a trillion is enough. I don't know if a quadrillion is enough. We don't have enough information to do anything more than guess as to probability of intelligent life on other planets. There is no informed speculation, just wishful thinking by anyone who thinks there either is or isn't intelligent life on other planets.

Yes it's large but why is relevant? How do you use that number? What is the probability of sapient (or sentient, however you want to define it) life on any of those planets?

We don’t have to amplify their attempts to deflect from what the GOP is doing by criticizing fringe Dems for “reparations.” I can tell you right now, reparations will not be part of the Dem platform in 2024. Book bans, whitewashed history, abortion bans, etc will be the focal point of the GOP platform.
Sure reparations won't be part of national 2024 platform but I also wouldn't dismiss it as "fringe". I fully admit that I don't know the ramifications / likelihood of passing but in California there was a state task board that has met and presented recommendations to the state senate including economic reparations. Those weren't defined, as the task force specifically said they weren't able to come up with a number and recommended economists come up with something, but I do think there is something brewing.
Now the word reparations can mean way different things to way different people, but again just wouldn't dismiss it as kooky talk.

@shadow_operative - you keep talking about bans but I haven't noticed anyone in this thread except yourself claiming that that a ban is imminent or even being discussed. You know that UWS and others are not mods. You know that immamac has seen this thread as he replied in it and moved it. It is still not banned. You have repeatedly said that a ban on the word threatens the soul of Surly. Why do you keep referencing something that is not in the conversation?
Also, regarding the "tar and feathering" for using the word, I strongly suspect that not a single poster has had their opinion of you change, for better or worse, as a result of your usage of the word or the existence of this thread.

Wrong thread, but this is mostly a nonsense take. If Gore had been elected, he would've had to do the same thing.
Ana is super proud of this both siderism. Gore would have had a response but it is utter foolishness to suggest our next two decades of FAFO in the Middle East, set in motion with 7 years of fuckery by the Bush admin, would have played out the same with Gore admin.

Bro don't you understand? We should only invest resources into people who we know will actually make use of them, right @fattyflattie? Why bother paying teachers if they're just gonna be teaching poor kids amirite?
Even better - kids die so he can keep his guns AND fewer taxes for fewer teachers means the boat fund grows. Win-win.

You are right on. And at the same time, one must confront that believing homosexuality is a sin, while having deep empathy and love for the sinner, and not wanting to encourage sin and be complicit in the social morass and further denigration of society IS a legitimate religious (orthodox, maybe?) view, whether you agree with it or not.
I think this ruling is
askingdemanding of the dissenting to view that the unalienable right of religious freedom here looks for them a lot like the old yarn of "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."Disapprove and disagree and, heck, even mock and denigrate and vilify it and hope they fail miserably-- but
respectunderstand the rights ofq those who believe it and that they operating within those rights, per the law of the land.A series of questions to help me (and potentially others) understand your vires on when it is reasonable to discriminate due to religious beliefs:
1a) 100 years ago do you belive it was a legitimate religious belief that black people were inferior and that mixed marriages were inherantly immoral? If not, why not given that it was widely preached in churches?
1b) 100 years ago do you believe it was acceptable to discriminate against black people by denying jobs, services, etc.? Same for denying mixed marriages.
1c) 100 years ago, do you belive that the Supreme Court should have upheld a claim that it was acceptable to discriminate against black people by denying jobs, services, etc? Same for denying mixed marriages.

Man, I like your posts but this schtik of "oh, it's not so bad, the Republicans are scared and desperate" ignores a much simpler fact. They are doing this because they can. It gains them more power. It hurts the people they want to hurt.
When people do bad things, sometimes it is Jean Valjean stealing a loaf of bread to feed starving kids and give credence to a nice plot line in Deep Space Nine. More often it's a seven year stealing a car because he wants to do it because it's fun, fun to do bad things.
