This board's got alotta aggy who like to pretend they ain't really aggy. -
I've only driven through that town once but seem to recall the town having a lot of what looked like locally quarried stone all around its little downtown area, which I think is cool and maybe even worth enough that the extracted value could net you up to at least $2,500 in building materials (minus labor) for a nice backyard project, like a rock wall or terrace.

It's not even as if the boat's arrival was imminent or anything. It was off the coast of Malta, between 1,000 and 1,200 miles away.

The guy Talarico is questioning is Stan Gerdes, State Representative for Bastrop, Burleson, Caldwell, Lee, and Milam counties. The guy isn't an old or really even a rural rube either. He's a 39yo Texas grad whose biography seems to indicate he's lived in and around Austin, as well as DC, for the last two decades. He didn't write this bill out of ignorance or gullibility. It's just another example of manipulative lies to throw on the pile with the intent of breeding hate, scaring old people, and destroying public education in Texas. If any of you live in that district, he and his staff need to be mocked and hassled relentlessly over this complete stupidity. I realize that Talarico's M.O. is calm and patient logic, but he missed a chance to ask that asshole if he wants his name permanently attached to such an imbecilic law that folks will still be making fun of in 100 years like we do other pointless bullshit on the books like those forbidding using feather dusters in public buildings or milking your neighbor's cow. Or maybe Talarico should take Brisket's advice and just start accusing the guy of being a sick pedo to his face for fantasizing about children using a peepee box while wearing garanimals.

CEO of UHG Shot and Killed in NYC - WTF is wrong with you New York
bolverk replied to Bevo's topic in Daily Texan
How, pray tell, does a paralegal at the New York County District Attorney's Office go about inadvertently listening in on a privileged conversation between a defendant and his lawyer? They need to walk us through the steps leading up to that "mishap." I also wonder how the lie about the paralegal only hearing part of the call was discovered and what actions have been taken to prevent it from happening again. Are there remedies a defense team could seek for this accidental oversight? -

@Iceman @bluto One complaint I've seen with valuations, at least in Travis County, is that commercial and industrial properties are often highly undervalued, which places more of a burden on residential properties to take up the slack. Intentionally or not, it could also be seen as a bit of a hidden economic development incentive for businesses. That said -- all during the last decade and leading up to Covid -- the assessed value on my home often couldn't keep pace with the rapidly rising market value. Of course, the assessed value would generally go up each year, but not nearly as fast as what the house could've easily sold for on the market. But, yeah, getting comps to assess taxable values is more of an "art than it is a science" (i.e., flexible, elastic, or bullshit, based on perspective), which makes them contestable in many cases. -

It seems that including future indebtedness to the US for more aid would be highly discouraged with this deal (duh!), which certainly incentivizes Ukraine to seek military hardware from elsewhere (double duh!). -
I hear what you're saying, and it's a good comparison. To me, Braveheart feels like a flick from the 1980s, but Gladiator has a more timeless cinematic character to it.

Don't be surprised if there's a lag on it getting added. This story is from last Wednesday, and they still haven't added Scurry County into the official tally. That might be because they haven't been able to tie it to the Gaines County outbreak yet. Unsure why it's not in the mix. https://www.reporternews.com/story/news/2025/04/23/measles-now-in-scurry-county-as-health-officials-investigate-abilene-texas/83237530007/

Funny. My mom grew up on a farm outside of Blanket, and the rest of her family was scattered from the Brownwood/Early metropolis to San Saba, Goldthwaite, and on down to Bertram. So, anyway, what the fuck is wrong with you, Austin?

Got it. My first six years were spent in Seagraves, and my dad's mom lived in Denver City. The rest of my public school years were in Big Spring, and I got my undergrad at Tech. So, I'm pretty familiar with the various dynamics of the area. Despite all flatland appearances, those towns on the Llano Estacado aren't fully homogenous.

I vote to document your trip here since it already has the traffic and, well, you're primarily there to help the war effort. Any side adventures are just gravy but also a nice reprieve from the all the bad shit. Edit: Now, if you get lucky, and by that I mean the vicarious 'we,' then you should already know where to post that content. -
Yeah, we had much the same experience visiting other districts. Our school had to borrow the YMCA's pool for swim meets, and the legend goes that our rickety football stadium was a hand-me-down from another district, which was disassembled and put back together where it is now. Visiting Andrews for away games and inevitably comparing facilities always lead to embarrassment. If I had to guess, it sounds like you were in the Lubbock Cooper district back in the day, when it was a poor cotton-farming area that's now booming and is *the* up-and-coming district up there, with its fancy new second high school. Frenship would also apply, I suppose, depending on your age. I think they just got a second high school, too.

Don't bother. You're responding to GRU, who's posting a tweet from the same guy who kept predicting Europe would freeze that first winter after the start of the Russian war on Ukraine. GRU loves that guy's Xitter account.

s) Midland, Pecos, Wink. It's all Permian Basin oil. Mineral value is added to regular dirt value when it comes to property taxes in Texas, so you get some rinky-dink rural school districts in the Permian Basin with astronomical property tax bases and very few students that have to be educated. That money goes back into statewide coffers in much the same way that Austin ISD has to - just at a different scale. In the district I attended back in the 1970s-1980s, the boundaries barely reached the city limits. Hell, in parts of town, other districts actually cut into the town proper (still do), which means my district didn't benefit at all from the oil getting pumped out of the ground. We were "property poor," but the district just south of us was based in a town with fewer than 300 people, and they had ALL THE OIL with wall-to-wall carpeting in the high school hallways and an astroturf football field...back in the 1980s. They couldn't spend the money fast enough. The funding disparities were DRAMATIC before Robin Hood. Shit definitely still needs tweeking/fixing, but the intent at that time was noble because our district boundaries are all kinds of fucked up. San Antonio's very poor Edgewood ISD lawsuit (if I recall correctly) back then was what forced the Texas Supreme Court to declare our property-tax-based system to be unconstitutional because it didn't guarantee even close to an equitable education for all kids. Personally, I'd do some serious school district consolidation to even things out and then rejigger the formulas once the property tax base disparities were flattened out a little bit after consolidation, but that would never fly politically because suburban districts make out like bandits under the current system. Where you live in a proximate area shouldnβt dictate whether your kid gets a decent education, especially within a county or metro area, imho. It's kind of dumb to begin with, because what does the value of property in a specific place have to do with funding education, to begin with? I mean, do bigger houses or whatever mean the kids living in them are inherently worth more? Don't answer that.

Uh, it's reporting about the Voice of America going dark in Asia. You don't think the CCP is happy about that? Also, yes, the NYTimes skews left, but it's in no way comparable to the talking head drivel you see on cable news where it's de rigueur for vapid teevee Kens and Barbies just talk partisan shit. Your Overton Window is showing.
