  1. I'm not watching it, but have they trotted this kid out to sing yet?
  2. Headline should read Israeli terrorists but whatever. West Bank settlers attack Palestinian villages, angry about prisoner releases. As three hostages were reunited with their families in Israel after 15 months of captivity in Gaza, settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank attacked at least three Palestinian villages, according to residents and the Israeli military. Palestinian residents of the villages said that the attackers were masked and burned homes and vehicles, accounts that were backed up by video footage on social media verified by The New York Times. The Israeli military said in statements that the villages had been subject to β€œviolent riots” and β€œviolent confrontation” but did not mention arson attacks. The military said that it had detained two suspects and handed them over to the Israeli police. The police did not respond to a request to confirm the episodes or the detentions. Honenu, a legal organization that has represented settlers, on Monday issued a statement on behalf of one of its lawyers, Daniel Shimshilashvili, saying that two people accused by the police of setting fire to the homes of Palestinians in the West Bank had been released after a court hearing. It did not name the two. The violence against Palestinians in the West Bank comes as many far-right Israelis have been protesting the cease-fire agreement between Hamas and Israel, hoping to disrupt implementation of the deal. On Sunday, WhatsApp groups administered by Israeli settler groups were full of angry comments about the release of Palestinian prisoners to the West Bank and calls to block their entry with organized protests. Many users said that the released prisoners, some convicted of mass-casualty attacks on Israelis, posed a threat to citizens of Israel. In Sinjil, a village south of Nablus, dozens of men, some carrying slingshots, rampaged through the village throwing stones and setting houses on fire, according to residents and videos verified by the Times. One clip showed vehicles burning in the village. β€œPeople screamed as their homes were burning,” said Ayed Jafry, 45, a resident of Sinjil. He said that several people were injured, including an 86-year-old man. On Sunday morning, a WhatsApp group for settlers posted a video of an Israeli man outside a shop with shattered glass, in Funduq, a Palestinian town. β€œThe next stage is destroying it,” he declared. In a video taken from a CCTV camera in Turmus Aya, at least 20 masked men can be seen throwing stones and entering the village, as Israeli police cars appear in the distance. Villagers said the officers stayed clear of the violence and did not try to stop it. Lafi Adeeb, the mayor of Turmus Aya, said that the police didn’t enter the village but that the military eventually dispersed the riot using tear gas. β€œI was shocked,” he said, because β€œthis is the first time the army stopped the settlers here.” Palestinian villagers in Turmus Aya and Sinjil, some of whom are U.S. citizens, alerted the American embassy in Israel about the attacks, and a senior U.S. diplomat called the office of Defense Minister Israel Katz to inform him, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic information.
  3. Same. I turned it off after that and went to bed in disgust.
  4. As if this day couldn't get worse.
  5. This came out several years ago and might be the study you're referencing: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-states-are-in-the-midwest/
  6. @Captain Ron When I was watching coverage of the fires on the YouTube stream of that local Fox channel mentioned above, it was like a free 15-minute commercial fawning over Musk as they announced that "free" Starlink service was going to be rolled out. Obvious scam from the outset.
  7. Oh, I agree, absolutely. I've done projects up in both OKC and Tulsa and was surprised when people mentioned a self-identification with the Midwest (Big 8, yo), as opposed to the Southwest, the Sun Belt, or the South. Hell, when visiting my sister (who now says "pop") in Denver, I've also heard people say they thought of themselves as Midwesterners. It's a vast expanse that, of course, needs to be broken up into regions to pick up all the various flavors... (edit) or lack thereof, if we're being honest.
  8. I could see how some would leave them out, especially NE Ohio around Cleveland or SE Ohio next to (or part of) Appalachia. Except she's in Dayton, about a half-hour east of the Indiana state line. Plus, she was telling me recently about how she and her neighbors had a "Mexican" potluck dinner where she served a "Mexican" corn casserole of some sort involving mayo. She's very Midwestern.
  9. I first noticed it when I met my birthmother from Ohio several years ago when I was in my early 30s. It sounded so odd to my ear that I actually looked it up, and it turned out to be mostly a quirky Midwestern usage. That's not a criticism either because I like variety in accents and dialects. It makes language fun. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positive_anymore
  10. Let me know if anyone ever accuses you of being a bot, so I can have your back. Your use of "anymore" instead of "nowadays" is a giveaway that you're a real, live Midwesterner.

  12. When I met her in undergrad, my ex-wife was working in a head shop and they sold those dumb little bracelets each with the name of a state on them. Except on the Hawaiian one, they'd accidentally spelled it "Hawall." We thought that was hilarious when we got stoned -- laughed our asses off. I think that's when we fell in love. ❀️ h-a-w-a-l-l πŸ’”
  13. Upper Volta?!? Yeah, well, Burkina Faso says Up Your Volta.
  14. Inka: Oh, yeah, an Amazon mosquito, maybe, but not a Hawaiian mosquito. That's my point. Hookem: Oh, yeah, I agree with that. Inka: But then, of course, Amazon mosquitos are non-migratory. Hookem: Oh, yeah, so it couldn't be there anyway. Inka: Wait a minute. Suppose two mosquitos carried it together...

  16. Just go to this link: https://archive.is/ From there, you just paste in the link to whichever article you want to read. Sometimes, you get lucky and someone else will have already "archived" it, and the site page pops up quickly. Sometimes, you're the first, and it takes a little while to generate. It seems to work about 9 out of 10 times. Edit: Other links for the same purpose that I've kept bookmarked if the above doesn't work (aside from 12ft ladder are): https://txtify.it/ https://www.textise.net/
  17. I wouldn't lead you astray. No sir. No way. Seriously, it's a safe link.
  18. I haven't read it yet, but here's an archive link that should work for you. https://archive.is/H7273
  19. You're in Houston, right? You guys got up into the mid-60s yesterday, and the ground isn't going to flash freeze and destroy any underground pipes when you guys hit a low of 18 Tuesday night (early Wednesday morning), per the current NWS forecast. It's highly unlikely your pipes will burst, but I would just drip the faucets and keep the cabinet doors under the sinks open to allow the ambient room temperature to help keep the pipes warm. If you're super concerned, place space heaters near any sinks facing an exterior wall. This too shall pass.

  23. Imagine what the King of Debt would do with an American sovereign wealth fund. U.S. Faces Record Debt Levels as Republicans Plan Tax Cuts The Congressional Budget Office forecasts that annual deficits will top $21 trillion over the next decade. The United States is poised to add trillions of dollars to the national debt over the next decade as the mounting costs of social safety net programs and growing interest expenses dig the nation into a deeper fiscal hole, according to a report released on Friday by the Congressional Budget Office. The new budget forecasts predicted that the United States will record a $1.9 trillion budget deficit this fiscal year and that annual deficits over the next decade will total $21.1 trillion. That will be piled on to a national debt that currently exceeds $36 trillion. By 2035, the debt as a share of the U.S. economy will rise to 118 percent, the largest in history. The debt is currently 100 percent of gross domestic product. Although the figures show slightly smaller deficits than what the C.B.O. projected last June, thanks to higher salaries and stock values, the nation’s fiscal situation is poised to become far more precarious. That’s because the budget office’s outlook assumes that the 2017 tax cuts that are scheduled to expire this year will actually come to an end, and that tax revenues will start to increase next year. But with President-elect Donald J. Trump set to retake the White House next week and Republicans fully in control of Congress, those tax cuts are almost certainly going to be extended. Continuing the tax cuts is expected to cost more than $4 trillion over the next decade, according to previous estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.
