  2. And that's what GRUhorn Boss Hogg, along with his one-off socks in the DT Ukraine thread, wants.
  3. Yeah, that's going to win over no one. Hell, I support "the cause," allowing Palestinians full autonomy over the West Bank and Gaza as a truly independent country, but even I'd be pissed about trying to catch a flight. It's one thing to march and chant slogans, but don't make me get stranded in fucking Queens. In fairness, some of the protestors have been idiots and absolutely give ammunition to those who have defended the blockade (and now destruction) of Gaza and also the occupation of the West Bank. While I understand the impulse to support an ally, I don't understand turning a blind eye to documented war crimes as defined by international law established by Western democracies. My not supporting terrorism by Hamas and other radical Islamic groups doesn't mean I have to support war crimes by Israel's government and extremist settlers. Still, injustice is unjust, and non-Jewish people from the "Holy Land" deserve their freedoms too.
  4. It's still good for Ukraine updates in the 3-4 related subs, polandball, mapporn, and, well, porn.
  5. Totally forgot about that guy, but his "voice" does sound the same.
  6. Israel should've never let the illegal settlements take place in the West Bank. These people are their version of our shit-stirring "sovereign citizen" and QAnon-types, but likely much more dangerous. This is the shit that I wish people in the US would understand. There is a dangerous movement in Israel that's taking over their politics with very illiberal ideals and who want to eventually ethnically cleanse the "Holy Land" of all Palestinians. What's worse, we have Americans and ostensibly educated posters on this very site who are openly supportive of this war crime. I don't think I've seen a single poster that supports terrorism and war crimes committed by Hamas. Meanwhile, Likud member and former Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, who's positioning himself to head the party, along with Smotrich, is advocating for the "voluntary migration" of Palestinian refugees to other countries for cash under the guise of humanitarian aid. I think we all know about Smotrich at this point, but here's more on some of Danon's views:
  7. Apparently, he had passed an initial drug test using his hair samples. https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/nation/2023/11/113_362544.html
  8. Linked article discusses many cases where subjects are misidentified as Antifa by kooks and turn out only to be Trump supporters. Oops. The best part of the story is in the last two paragraphs: Many Trump supporters, on the other hand, came to the nation's capital expecting to see antifa around every corner. The fact that the pro-Trump Proud Boys talked about going to Jan. 6 "incognito" and dressed in black only confused more typical Trump supporters, or "normies," as the Proud Boys call them. The constant coverage of Black Lives Matter and anti-Trump protests on conservative media led to a funhouse mirror effect, with Trump supporters saying in videos, social media posts and in court that they were primed to see antifa all over Washington when they were looking at their fellow Trump supporters. “I was going to be super hard and go punch a antifa terrorist in the face. And I end up being the terrorist," former West Virginia Councilman Eric Barber, later sentenced to 45 days in prison, said in his FBI interview. "Plot twist, huh?”

  10. Interesting interview about American evangelicism with the author of “The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism.” It touches on how Trump's popularity is related to Prosperity Gospel; why they liked the "Sound of Freedom"; how they viewed the pandemic from an apocalyptic angle; and how they're so susceptible to being grifted. NYTimes says it's about a 12-minute read. One sample of the Q&A: Coaston: Something you get into later in the book are the contours of a generational divide within evangelical churches, on Trump, but also other issues. What does that divide look like? Alberta: Kids, college students certainly, and these younger generations are much more socially aware, probably culturally more sensitive and just less given to zero-sum militarism around various disputes and debates. It’s fascinating to see, mostly because the ideological differences between them and their parents are not all that vast. Many of these young people, if you went down the list and asked them about certain issues and how they would vote, there’s not some sharp divergence necessarily from their parents just on paper. But in their heart and in their speech and in their actions, there’s this dramatic generational course correction. Even at a place like Liberty University, which has become sort of the avatar of evangelicalism’s moral corruption, you spend time there with students and you’re just consistently blown away by how many who are conservative theologically, conservative culturally, conservative politically want nothing to do with Trump, and they want nothing to do with MAGA, and they want nothing to do with Christian nationalism. They think about all of these things through a completely different lens. It really does come back to this idea of, do you view your faith through the prism of politics, or do you choose to view politics through the prism of your faith? 12. Some not-so-great news in the east this week is that Ukraine unfortunately lost a town, Marinka, which is very close to the city of Donetsk. It's not a strategic place and was likely a pyrrhic victory for the Russians with a large loss of personnel. But, still, their willingness to throw meat into the grinder is working for now. Like someone said above, it's their only means for any kind of success. A day after Russia said it had taken complete control of Marinka, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s top military commander, spoke in sober terms about the fight, comparing it to the scorched-earth battle for Bakhmut, the eastern city that fell to Russia in May. Like Bakhmut, Marinka held limited strategic value, but is now a trophy in ruins for Moscow. “The situation is exactly the same as it was in Bakhmut,” General Zaluzhny said at a news conference. “Street by street, block by block, and our soldiers were being targeted. And the result is what it is.” Ukraine’s forces, he said, have retreated to the outskirts of the city and set up some positions behind it, indicating that the cost of staying and fighting was too high. Every inch of Ukrainian land is vital, General Zaluzhny said, but “the lives of our fighters are more important to us.” ***** The battle for Marinka illustrated a defining feature of Russia’s invasion, one that analysts say gives Moscow’s forces a big advantage: Its willingness to send wave after wave of troops into fierce assaults, accepting a staggering number of casualties but counting on superior numbers in soldiers and ammunition to wear down the enemy. It is the same approach Russia has taken in the nearby city of Avdiivka, where it has been attacking for months in the face of fierce Ukrainian resistance. The Russian assaults come as Ukraine is encountering dwindling support from Western allies. A suburb of Donetsk, Marinka once had a population of 10,000 and streets lined with schools, shops and even a museum. Today no civilians are left and the place has been reduced to rubble. “Ukrainian forces held Marinka for almost two years as the Russians annihilated it street by street, and then house by house,” General Zaluzhny said on Tuesday. Geolocated footage shows that Russian forces attacked Ukrainian positions over months of battle. Then on Monday, Russia said it had seized full control of the town. The capture of Marinka could allow Russian forces to turn their sights to the nearby towns of Kurakove, Vuhledar and Pokrovsk, bringing them closer to achieving Russia’s goal of capturing the entire Donbas region. General Zaluzhny said Ukrainian troops had “prepared a defensive line outside” Marinka, suggesting that his military would try to thwart Russia’s efforts to advance farther. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/26/world/europe/ukraine-crimea-russia-warship-novocherkassk.html

  19. Christmas Moves to Dec. 25 in Ukraine, Another Rebuff of Russia The Ukrainian Orthodox Church formally changed the main date for the festivities, departing from the Russian tradition of celebrating on Jan. 7, according to the Julian calendar. Christmas lights flickered on ahead of schedule. Families sang carols a little sooner. And the first presents of the season — by tradition hidden under a pillow or in a boot — appeared two weeks early. Of Ukraine’s many Western-oriented changes, put in place bit by bit since independence and accelerated during the war, one brought special joy this year: Christmas came early. After centuries of marking the holiday on Jan. 7 under the Julian church calendar, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church this year formally switched to celebrating on Dec. 25 with most of the rest of Europe — and pointedly not with Russia. For 6-year-old Darynka, that meant practicing carols early and enjoying the excitement of receiving gifts like a Rainbow High doll and a paint set two weeks earlier than she did than last year. “I love Christmas!” she said. Her mother, Halyna Shvets, saw a step toward Europe in the Ukrainian church’s decision to shift the date away from Russia’s tradition, not only for Christmas celebrations but for other religious holidays as well. “We are really happy,” she said. “Faith in God is a fundamental pillar of our lives. Celebrating Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, is an opportunity for us to gather for this beautiful Ukrainian religious tradition.” cont'd: Christmas photos from Kyiv
