Post Season Notes
With the season coming to a close, it’s time for Jim Schlossnagle and his staff to move on and look to the future. Now it’s all about building on this past season and improving for the future.
The NCAA baseball portal window officially opened on June 1st and it will run through July 2nd.
As of Monday afternoon, I am expecting the Horns to lose at least four players to the portal. One of those has already been announced in outfielder Matt Scott. It is worth nothing that Scott was not on the postseason roster.
The other three names will be along those lines as well. Not difference makers at this point in time.
Now that’s not to say more will not enter, but just as of now, that’s what I’m expecting.

Texas will be very aggressive in the portal as well.
A plan has been in place for quite some time and they’re looking to upgrade talent and depth at every position, regardless of which players are currently on the roster. The Longhorns have been watching, evaluating and keeping close tabs on difference makers across the nation.
When I say every position, I truly mean EVERY position.
I do think they’ll look at pitching and 2nd/shortstop very closely, however.

Obviously Texas has an extremely talented recruiting class coming in that is loaded with top end talent. The big question is how much of that talent they’ll be able to hold onto.
I’m told that the Horns only feel iffy on two prospects at this time: SS Kayson Cunningham (San Antonio Johnson) and 3B Gavin Fien (Great Oak / Temecula, Cal.).
There’s about a 20% chance they hang onto Cunningham, who is considered to be one of the best players in the nation.
Don’t be shocked if the majority ends up on the Forty Acres, however.
It is important to remember (down the road) that some of the commits in this class are from David Pierce’s time at Texas.

Many people have asked about Troy Tulowitzki being retained.
“That’s pretty comical,” a source said.

On a similar note, I’ve been asked if Texas A&M head coach Michael Earley was let go, would he have ended up at Texas in some capacity.
I can say with certainty that wouldn’t have happened.
