  1. Affordability is a big part and I've talked to several work from anywhere folks moving here from California on comparing Austin to San Antonio. For $1.5 million you can get 2200 sq ft fixer upper in Eanes or 4K sq ft with a pool and a historic home in Alamo Heights. A good number of these buyers are of Asian or SE Asian descent and see Austin as a more multicultural place, at least in terms of their racial and economic peers. Alamo Heights has more in common with New Orleans than Austin in terms of antipathy towards new money so I can understand how they might feel that way. It's kind of a shame we don't have the political will to build Japanese high speed rail between the cities because that would be HUGE for San Antonio AND allow Austin to grow a little slower.
  2. I've actually flown in first class with Timothy Hutton an isle over, too. I suppose we're Eskimo brothers, of sorts.
  3. I've been thinking Austin is going to drag San Antonio along for the ride for awhile and recommending California SFR investors to take a look there, particularly if their price range is $350K or less. I'm also bullish on Lockhart but I can't think of a good analogue (maybe a Round Top within commute range of Austin or poor man's Boerne, perhaps).
  4. Tron: Legacy’s soundtrack is top 20 (or better).
  5. Do you mind expanding on what you perceive as a failure here? IMO, too early to tell.
  6. Bringing this back around to recruiting, why your analysis is wrong, and why this is a bad hill for you and the others to die on: You are correct that the social media has made geography less important in terms of gaining fame, but MONETIZING it is optimized in moving to a large media market. We aren't going to compete with USC on an Evan Stewart who thinks his post ball career is creating a lifestyle brand if we're promoting Austin's (or even Texas's) media market as a great way for him to have a few commercials. I also don't think we dropped the ball just because two lineman went to Oregon and some MMA gym owner is willing to pay $500K for one year of Miami football sponsorship. If you do think we are potentially dropping the ball because it's past time to fully weaponize The Longhorn Network then I'd agree there, at least in terms of traditional media. Forget the P&L, run that son of a bitch at a loss but get eyeballs on it. That's the kind of shit the high school kids might notice (and if you feel like Texas media market exposure is a good peer to LA then this is how you might prove it).
  7. I'm not entirely sure you understand what a media market refers to....
  8. Now you’ve started my nostalgia going-the whole cast is an All-star team. Tom Wilkinson in his most fun role outside of Michael Clayton, Rufus Sewell playing Hamilton as a villain, hell Sarah Polley appears in what’s little more than a 3 scene cameo and she never does anything uninteresting. I may just be unaware but I’m kind of surprised Sundance TV or National Geographic/Disney doesn’t try to do more historical miniseries like this-I would presume the Turner produced Bible adaptations done in the ‘90’s could serve as proof of concept (this, too, obviously but I’m sure the production was outrageously expensive for something with no dragons).
  9. Haha on the thread title change-now back to the “Fat People” thread.
  10. I’ll add that as a piece of entertainment, I’m also glad he wasn’t the main character. John Adam’s is a much more engaging entry point and observer on the titans of that age.
  11. I had seen him in some British stuff but he had never previously stood out-his Jefferson was by turns prideful, entitled, cultured, and brilliant. I’ll give a lot of credit to the writers, too, but Dillane totally captured the sense that this person was born to incredible privilege and yet had strong revolutionary, almost anarchic tendencies shaped by a zeal for independence and desire to shake off the yoke of his upbringing and the landed aristocracy. I don’t know how well that reflected the real Jefferson but as a character he was just fantastic.
  12. Ted Lasso was the best thing I watched in 2020.
  13. Dillane's Jefferson was my favorite part, too.
  14. That’s not my impression at all-I think Gerry has an insider on the Texas coaching staff, at a minimum. Bellmont overall is a leaky sieve of gossip so there are plenty of admin to get nuggets from even for a Chip Brown.
  15. I agree-I think the little fiefs that have developed with the dealer model aren’t in line with our vision of American capitalism, but it’s better than sending all the profit to Detroit or Tokyo. At least with the current system some of that gets recycled into the local economy (Coverts need groceries, too).
  16. Le Pigeon was the only restaurant I was impressed with, truly. If you love foie gras they do some incredible things with it.
  17. I agree with this...if it sticks. I can’t decide if it’s cowardice or self-awareness on the part of Abbott. I don’t really see the end game here-you do two-three terms as governor and then what? He ain’t doing Dancing with the Stars....
  18. Just pointing out the obvious, but goddamn these coaches hated our LB depth chart. This is one reason why I take every “Brockermeyer has surprised” and “Gbenda looks like he could be a big contributor” from the $9.95 with a big pinch of salt.
  19. That was my first thought. I don’t see how the endorsement of a capricious toddler really changes anyone’s strategy.
  20. I’ll just say that’s elevated fashion in light of what I saw this lot wearing at John Mueller BBQ’s grand opening and before he fell into disfavor.
  21. Their regular entree is $50. I remember when it was $19 and $7 for the snails.
  22. Size and strength are my first two impressions from that picture, as well.
