  1. I never get tired of listening to this. It is a perfect arrangement of a perfect song. The subtlety of the kiss-off in music and verse is absolutely stunning. And in this case the band is so tight behind him, but allows Willie to do his Willie thing and jazz it up a bit. I know I've posted this half a dozen times in various places here it's like a musical deconstructed hamburger. In any case, here it is again because it fits here.
  2. My uncle had a similar deal with my aunt while he was in Vietnam. I asked her about it later, after he’d passed. After getting over the shock of me asking, she said she didn’t begrudge him much when every day held the specter of death. People have needs. I didn’t ask her what it was like being alone stateside with three kids wondering if your husband would make it back. She’s gone now too. Perspective. She had it.
  3. Aged, but still true. Dime a dozen around here, apparently.
  4. I wonder if this has anything to do with the hypersonic missiles we saw launched at Kyiv a day or two ago.
  5. This. They still aren't out of Ukraine (obvs) and they have done a hell of a lot of damage and much of it irreversible (in human terms). Of course, Ukraine wasn't a NATO member, but even so, the example is before of us what could be.
  6. It's a great book and that series is greatness. Alamo Allstars is straight gold.
  7. Speaking of, this is one of their covers that I never get tired of. And frankly, I do think it's better than the original. Forgive me if I posted it here before.
  8. Not just anyone either. The spouse of a candidate from their own party.
  9. I’m no great fan of Ladybug, but hasn’t he been a strong anti-Russia/pro-Ukraine guy?
  10. Maybe, but even so, there aren’t enough of us.
  11. Same idea, but I thought my delivery was better.
  12. They also had significant time spent out processing and taking boats back across the sea - time to adjust in other words. Not the camps Eleanor had in mind, but decompressing time nonetheless. As I understood it, the problems during the war on terror developed from waking up, going to work in a temp building, blowing some people up and then mounting up in the mini-van and picking up the kids from daycare. Not really analogous situation.
  13. Damn. I have to build a cope cage for my sedan?
  14. I had a rare Saturday night free and since I had not yet been to the Longhorn Ballroom I decided to go check these guys out. I had low expectations because it is a tribute band of sorts, but man was I wrong. They were fantastic! It wasn’t just guys up there halfheartedly covering Bob Wills, they brought the feeling. The place was packed and people were up and dancing the whole time. A couple of Bob Willis’s relatives were in the audience and got a shout out from the stage. I don’t follow these guys so I have no idea if this was a one off or if they’re touring. But if they are you should check them out. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a long while.
  15. Which reminds me of reading a letter somewhere from a guy who joined a Nazi work labor group to patriotically go and build the autobahn with a bunch of other true believer German laborers. This was pre war. The upshot was “I can’t believe how bad these Nazi labor guys are treating us! If the Fuhrer only knew I’m sure he’d put a stop to it! Can you help me get a message to him?!” It was that period’s “I can’t believe leopards would eat MY face” expression. History rhyming again and all.
  16. Don't get me wrong, I'm agreeing with you. It's just that what I'm seeing aligns with Brisket's post upthread. The head General has said, "we need more bodies" and the head pol has said, "not gonna do that." So I'm not sure what the answer is here.
