  1. Think about how much "work" is involved. Help draft great Rush resumes. Review social media, gives pointers about what to post and what to delete. Use alumni network to get good rec letters. Tell the girl what close to wear, how to cut her hair, etc. Guide them on what and what not to say, how to act, etc at meet parties and interviews. Hold mock interviews, maybe. That's 20-25 hours (tops) per girl. That's an easy $4k.
  2. I disagree. Our empathy to attach great meaning to "things", for those things to define something in our character or our family's history, is one of the intangibles that sets us apart from every life form on this planet. Those "things" help to define us and guide our lessons to teach to younger generations.
  3. I have a 1962 Rolex which belonged to my dad and has tons of sentimental value that I'm not selling for $1M dollars. That shit is going to stay in the family until aliens or we destroy this planet. That watch defines my family's story and is a reminder of where we came from. There truly are some things that money cannot buy.
  4. Gotta keep up with...(checks notes) Oklahoma! SEC! SEC! SEC! Texas-themed Amusement Park Coming to an unlucky shit town near you. I could see Corpus, San Antonio, San Angelo, White Settlement, Arlington, or even Beau-fucking-mont jizzing themselves to get this amusement park. https://www.kxan.com/news/texas/texas-themed-amusement-park-to-open-in-2026/ One Texas entrepreneur has a Texas-sized goal: to build a Texas-themed amusement park. “Why not put a business model that’s meant to bring people together with the content of Texas that already brings people together? It’s a match made in heaven,” TexasLand USA founder and CEO Lizzy McGee said. McGee, a sixth-generation Texan and Houston native, said she noticed there was a lack of theme parks in Texas — particularly in the Austin and Houston metros — for a state that has the population and metrics that theme park companies look for. So, she took her Disney theme park strategy background, earned a master’s degree in business administration and started planning TexasLand USA. She wants the park to have elements from all parts of the state — West Texas, East Texas, North Texas, South Texas — to celebrate the differences across the state and bring people together to celebrate Texans’ unique identity. “The coolest thing about Texas is it’s kind of a microcosm of the US in terms of geographies, ethnicities, religions,” McGee said. “Despite having all that all those differences, we all come together to sing ‘Deep in the Heart of Texas’ in the seventh inning stretch.” McGee said the park will be built in phases. The first phase will not be “thrill-focused,” as that can be found at Six Flags. Instead, it would be “story-driven,” with attractions like a Marfa haunted house, a Galveston pirates ride and a Fort Worth rodeo skills ride, for example. The opening would also have Texas-based foods and drinks. From Dr Pepper and Fletcher’s Corny Dogs, to Tito’s and Blue Bell ice cream, as well as any number of barbecue joints, McGee said the possibilities are endless. The project’s location is still to be determined, but McGee hopes to have land under contract this fall. “We’re going to put it somewhere where the people want us,” she said. “Local collaboration is really important to us, and we understand that it could bring jobs, but it also will bring traffic, and there’s a lot of considerations.” McGee and her team started a Kickstarter to raise money for a demand study. The study will help the team create the grand vision for the park as well as plan for less-fun details like utilities. Their goal was about $71,000, but they exceeded that goal with nearly $82,000 raised. McGee is also hosting focus groups to learn what future parkgoers are looking for. She said TexasLand “will truly be a park that’s by Texans for Texans.” After the demand study is complete, they hope to land investment money for designing, planning and building the park. McGee said the most ambitious part of her project is its timeline. Her goal is to start construction in late 2024 with an grand opening in summer 2026. “We had to go big and bold on something because we’re Texas,” she said. Park updates will be posted on the TexasLand USA website and social media. Earlier this year, Universal Studios announced it would open a theme park in Frisco geared toward families. Last week, a $2 billion amusement park in Oklahoma was announced. The “Americana-themed” park is also slated to open in 2026. McGee said this announcement validated her idea that there is a need for theme parks. “So this really puts the fire under us. Everyone loves a David and Goliath story,” she said. “…Let us know your thoughts–whether you like what we’re doing whether you want to see something different–because if Oklahoma’s gonna have something Texas needs to have something.”
  5. Think of it this way. This is now the norm, having a great resume, awesome intro video, fun & safe social media presence. Any girl wanting to rush who doesn't have a normal (read great) profile will not present a great initial impression and will hurt them through the vetting and interview process. Can a girl wanting to rush present a great profile without using a consultant? Yes. But for the people in the Greek system, $4000 isn't that much money. It's a small fee if it gets the girl an increased chance to get a bid in a top Sorority. And like others said, it's probably a must if coming from out of state. I can't believe I just defended this shit.
  6. Apparently Nostradamus does not post on Surly.
  7. My daughter is in a Big Six sorority. She's definitely not legacy nor is she from feeder school.
  8. Star Wars universe has space travel, hyperdive, cloning, light sabers, but no Google. Seems legit.
  9. From what I learned from my daughter who was on the Rush team, all of the Sororities vet the candidates long before the interview. From the Rush resume, videos, rec letters, they decide on the girls they want to interview/rush and the girls that they REALLY want. So all that pre-work does have benefits, especially if you are after the top sororities. But yea, at the end of the day, it's still up the girl to interview well but it helps set first impressions and getting your foot in the door.
  10. bad decision leads to more bad decisions
  11. Don't taze me, bro. My daughter is in a sorority at Texas. No, I am NOT posting pics. No, I did NOT pay $4000 on a Sorority Consultant, or at least I better the fuck not have. This will descend into a Greek bashing thread... My thoughts coming from someone who was not Greek at Texas. My daughter has a great group of childhood high school friends who will continue to be friends for life. Some of her Sorority sisters seem/are fake as shit and are bitches. But she has a great core of 6-7 Sorority sisters who are great people and should be friends for life. Some of the Sorority shit she dealt with her Freshman and Sophomore years were beyond stupid, high school shit. I'd tune out the shit when she was complaining thinking "you are paying for this bullshit, deal with it." But this past Junior year, things mellowed out a bunch. No more drama. Just good, positive things. All in all, it has been an extremely positive thing for her. https://www.wsj.com/articles/sorority-consultants-rush-colleges-parents-prepare-80b2cfc8?st=ioep3c1hq6d66d7&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink Sorority rush at the University of Georgia kicks off in August, a lousy time to wear makeup. “You need to do it in a way that’s appropriate in southern humidity or else you’re going to have orange rivers running down your face,” said Trisha Addicks. She recommends keeping a “rush bag” with deodorant, portable fan, water and face powder. That’s the kind of practical advice Addicks gives clients of her Georgia-based sorority-consulting firm, It’s All Greek to Me. Showing up in Dr. Martens combat boots, as one client asked about, might not be putting your best foot forward in some sorority circles, she said: “During rush, you’re not going to be confident if you’re wearing them, and everybody else is wearing espadrilles.” Addicks offers a $600 seminar for women and their mothers to learn the basics about getting into a sorority; $3,500 buys unlimited access to sorority mentors who advise aspirants through every step. She is part of an industry emerging in recent years that sells tips and emotional support to women who want to avoid missteps that threaten first impressions. Sorority consultants cover such topics as what to wear, how to act, what to say and the wisdom of scrubbing potentially off-putting social media posts. Emma Kelley, a recent graduate, said hiring Addicks was worth it. Otherwise, she risked entering blind to the arcane rituals, traditions and unspoken rules of Greek life. “You have to be trendy but not too trendy, modest but not too modest, fit in but be unique,” said Kelley, who joined the University of Georgia’s Delta Zeta sorority. The trick, she said, is “blending in and standing out.” Getting into sororities has become nearly as competitive as acceptance to top universities. Applicants are asked to write essays, give their grade-point average and report whether they did volunteer work or played high-school sports. Women submit application packets with as many as 30 letters of recommendation, said Stacia Damron, owner of Hiking in High Heels in Texas. Some sororities require that applicants record video responses to their questions. “My boyfriend went to Stanford, and he said this is more complicated than getting a Stanford M.B.A.,” she said.
  12. Interested to see how the Season Finale saves this shitty show. We are at risk of WW3 killing 10-100s of millions, the threat of an inter-species war which may lead to humanity's extinction, and it's not enough concern for Nick to call his superhero friends? And why didn't Nick just shoot fake Rodey at the hospital and let him turn back into a Skrull for all to see, especially the President? As of right now, add this to the growing list of post End Game Marvel shows and films which suck. Did Marvel lose all their original writers? Marvel products are devolving to the shitty quality of Star Wars shows and movies. Most of the new characters and storylines are hollow and uninteresting.
  13. Texas upper coast and Louisiana are probably FUCKED! Interactive map. Here's your opportunity to scope cheap land today which may be ocean front in 20 years. https://coastal.climatecentral.org/embed/map/8/-92.9144/29.4485/?theme=sea_level_rise&map_type=year&basemap=roadmap&contiguous=true&elevation_model=best_available&forecast_year=2050&pathway=gmsl1p0m&percentile=p50&refresh=true&return_level=return_level_1&rl_model=tebaldi_2012&slr_model=noaa_2022 https://www.kxan.com/news/interactive-map-shows-which-texas-cities-will-be-underwater-in-2050/ A map created by Climate Central, an organization of scientists and journalists focused on studying the impacts of climate change, shows what the future may hold for coastal communities as sea level rises. For this story, we zeroed in on coastal Texas. In the first map (below), we set the projections to include sea level rise and typical annual flooding (weather that can be expected every year). We set the map to include what would happen with “unchecked pollution” between now and 2050. That setting most closely matches the current path we’re on, Climate Central said. We set the bar to “medium,” which reflects the middle range of possibilities predicted by scientists. n Texas, projections show cities on the state’s southern coastline have the highest risk of being underwater by 2050. Cities like Galveston and Bayou Vista appear at risk of heavy flooding during annual high-water events according to the map projections. Just southwest of Galveston, cities like Sargent and Freeport also see their coastline underwater, according to the projections. Other cities, like Oyster Creek and the Town of Quintana, are completely submerged during flood events. Additionally, water from Hynes Bay appears to cover a considerable chunk of Tivoli. In the southeastern part of Texas, the entire wildlife area below Port Arthur appears flooded on the map. The area between Beaumont and Rose City would also be flooded completely, according to projections. Enjoy spending time at the islands along Corpus Christi? Projections show every island connected to the city will be underwater by 2050 as well. If the pattern repeats across the map, the financial toll could be devastating.
  14. Like me, many people have been wanting to move out of this state for awhile. This July is just another reminder. For some, this July is a wake up call.
  15. So Jason Aldean didn't round up the posse and put an end to the theft, prostitution, and sexual assaults?
  16. Owning a home anywhere where you'd actually want to live is a huge fucking challenge. Yes there are affordable homes available, but who the fuck wants to live in BFE Jason Aldean Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, name your shitty state/city?
  17. Look at how much AISD contributes to Robinhood compared to the rest of the state and you'll see a big reason why AISD has "fallen apart". We just had to pass a special bond package to update AISD facilities. I all for it but in essence we are being taxed twice. And then try to track what the state is spending on that $800M AISD Robinhood money and you'll get even more pissed at the bullshit.
  18. OMFG! Probably the funniest video I've seen in a long time.
  19. Ignore the title. 73 yr old woman goes 100mph down residential street. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12315203/Shocking-moment-woman-dies-car-goes-airborne-crashes-home-100mph-Family-toddlers-inside-narrowly-avoid-injured.html
