I’m curious what you guys’ take on the Avs is. Seem to be able to score easily and very quickly but that defense is very  inconsistent. They have great defensemen like Makar, Byram, Girard, and Toews but currently ranking 27th in goals allowed. Could this be more of an issue with forwards letting the puck get too deep in their zone? A month or so back, Tortorella gave Conor McDavid a bunch of shit for his lousy defense, could the same be said about MacKinnon, Rantanen, and Landeskog?

MacKinnon has only played 13 games. I think the more he plays the better their defense will get. Not because he's a defensive phenom, but because his scoring prowess causes the other team to take fewer chances to avoid getting burned. But yeah, the D isn't as great as it could be and their goaltending is pretty bad. As a squad they're ranked 30/32 teams. That's not good.

Went to the Avs/Panthers game last night. Big win for Colorado! Felt like a playoff game, especially after the hit on MacDonald. Avs defense looked more sharp, with the exception of about 5 mins in the 3rd period when the Avs couldn’t sustain an attack and the Panthers scored twice. It’ll be interesting to see how their defense plays down the stretch. On paper, this team looks like a Cup winner but that defense needs to be crisp. Great game in net for Kuemper and Burakovsky with the hat trick!

Well, it's official now.

No Olympics for the NHL.

NEW YORK (Dec. 22, 2021) – With the National Hockey League’s regular-season schedule having been materially disrupted as a result of increasing COVID cases and a rising number of postponed games, the National Hockey League announced today that NHL Players will not participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

“The National Hockey League respects and admires the desire of NHL Players to represent their countries and participate in a ‘best on best’ tournament. Accordingly, we have waited as long as possible to make this decision while exploring every available option to enable our Players to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “Unfortunately, given the profound disruption to the NHL’s regular-season schedule caused by recent COVID-related events -- 50 games already have been postponed through Dec. 23 -- Olympic participation is no longer feasible. We certainly acknowledge and appreciate the efforts made by the International Olympic Committee, the International Ice Hockey Federation and the Beijing Organizing Committee to host NHL Players but current circumstances have made it impossible for us to proceed despite everyone’s best efforts. We look forward to Olympic participation in 2026.

“Our focus and goal have been and must remain to responsibly and safely complete the entirety of the NHL regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs in a timely manner. Therefore, with stringent health protocols once again in place, we will begin utilizing available dates during the Feb. 6-22 window (originally contemplated to accommodate Olympic participation) to reschedule games that have been, or may yet be, postponed.”

He's gonna pass Jagr next. Then it's only Gordie and Gretzky.

"In that sense, Ovechkin and Gretzky are quite similar; each with an unparalleled competitive drive and understanding for what it takes to get a puck past a goalie. Five years ago, the two went to dinner at Nobu in Malibu, along with their wives, a hockey summit arranged by Sergey Kocharov, the Capitals vice president for communications, who also worked with Gretzky when both were with the Phoenix Coyotes.

During the meal, Ovechkin peppered Gretzky with questions.

“What I found really nice was that he wasn’t asking me about scoring goals — he doesn’t need to ask anyone about that,” Gretzky said. “He wanted to know about getting his team over the line to win the Stanley Cup. It was refreshing.”

NEW YORK (Dec. 24, 2021) – The National Hockey League announced today that its regular-season schedule will not resume prior to Tuesday, Dec. 28. The League had planned to resume its schedule on Dec. 27, but in order to allow the League an adequate opportunity to analyze League-wide testing results and to assess Clubs’ readiness to play, the target date for resumption of game play will be pushed back an additional day. Teams will return to practice on Dec. 26 and it is expected that the League will provide an update on its return to play plans by the end of day on Sunday.
