Just got back from Yellowstone/Teton.   Highly recommend Roosevelt Lodge.
Also stayed at Old faithful inn, which was convenient & allowed me to sneak out and get this pic of old faithful at 4 am, in front of milky way & northern lights.
Have a bunch of other pics from the trip.  May post them later.

thanks.  you're too kind.

I have to say, I'm not a huge outdoorsy/camping/national parks guy, but I thought Yellowstone was amazing.   made me want to visit all the other top parks in the west and then revisit Yellowstone in 4-5 years. And we skirted the southern coast of Iceland for the first half of this trip (which was fantastic)  - but even as awesome as iceland was just one week earlier, I was still blown away by Yellowstone.   just realized most of my fav pics from the trip have my kids in them, so the one I already posted is def the best, but here are a few more.  cheers.  added some Teton pics.  we flew into Bozeman, hit Yellowstone, then Tetons, then Jackson, and flew out of Jackson hole.  worked really well for us.

Outstanding! Your photos make me yearn again for the trip I took there in July.

Your words about visiting the other parks in the West makes me wonder if a dedicated National Park thread might be useful.

We have a few specialized ones, mostly on the bigger parks, but all of them except this one and the Big Bend one pretty much fizzle out.

So, I am heading to Teton Village in 3 weeks just for a Sunday to Thursday work deal and never been to Teton or Yellowstone.  I won't have a car and will be entertaining some guests and short on time.  Staying at Teton lodge and Spa.  Any recs on what to do or not do and restaurant recs?  Not doing Yellowstone as the wife has a broken foot and can't really hike (will have to go back some other time as I want to see the sights in Yellowstone.  We are set to do a snake river float trip for 3 hours, a 4 hour van tour into Teton National Park that stops at a bunch of places.  May also have to take people golfing one afternoon.  Wife wants to do the tram in to the top of the mountain.  Anything else you can recommend would be appreciated.

There is a bus that runs between Teton Village and Jackson, but I would strongly consider renting a car.  One of my favorite things to do when I'm in Jackson is to drive around in the evenings and stop at all of the various pullouts to look at wildlife.  If you drive from Teton Village towards GTNP on Moose Wilson Road, you are probably going to see something.  I saw 3 moose and 3 bears at the pullout overlooking a pond close to the park when I was there this summer (over 4 separate stops).  You can also drive yourself to Dornan's and have a few beers on their patio while looking at the Teton's.  The food is OK, but the views are outstanding.

As far as restaurants go, I like Snake River Brewing and Bin22 for dinner.  I'm a big fan of Cafe Genevieve for breakfast or lunch and Persephone is a good breakfast place as well (although there is always a line). Jackson is a cool town and I've enjoyed all of the various restaurants and bars I've been to there; the ones I mentioned are just my favorites.  The only place I've eaten in Teton Village is the restaurant at the Four Seasons, which was fine...basically exactly what you would expect for a place like that.

It sounds like you have your activities pretty well covered. If you could swing it, I might try to talk people into hiking in GTNP instead of playing golf.  You can play golf anywhere, but the hiking in GTNP is not to be missed (says this non-golfer).  The Death Canyon Trail and the Cascade Canyon Trail are my favorites, with Cascade Canyon getting the nod for first place.  I can't imagine getting anyone to go hiking at any work events that I attend, so if hiking doesn't work out this time around, you can check one (or both) of them out an another trip.   I love Yellowstone, and I love hiking there, but I prefer hiking in GTNP because the views are so dramatic (in my opinion).

If you have ever stood at Jenny Lake and looked across to Cascade Canyon weaving its way towards the summit of the Tetons, you will know the joy of being in a sacred place, designed by God to be protected forever.

We are going to Yellowstone NP and GTNP the first week of October. The last time we went was late-October 2020. Covid restrictions were still in play then so the Park was not crowded at all but it also meant that a lot of amenities were also reduced or closed.

The plan is to spend 4 days in Yellowstone and 2 days in GTNP. The last time we did 3 days in Yellowstone and 2 in GTNP and felt rushed. We stayed in Mammoth Hot Springs for 2 days to cover the Northern part of Yellowstone and then moved down to Jackson to cover the Southern part and GTNP.

This time we are planning to stay at Canyon Lodge for 4 days instead of moving around to cover Yellowstone. Any of you stayed there before? Any recommendations? The couple that we are going with are not big hikers. We will still spend 2 days at GTNP staying in Jackson.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I’ll just say that if you want to see animals in Lamar valley, you will want to be there at dawn so be ready to get up early.  Especially if you are hoping to see wolves. The bison are always around somewhere.

also, I haven’t done it myself but the horseback rides seem enjoyable.

Boarding a plane in a few hours to SLC then driving tomorrow to the park. Been a long time since I have been up there. Looks a bit rainy, but I suspect we will manage. Youngest daughter graduated high school on Friday and just the two of us are going. Feels as if this is the last chapter in a book I have been writing for 25 years.

Nice. Post some pics for us.

Leaving for our place in Montana as soon as kids get back from camp next weekend.  We stay all summer and take the dog, so we drive up like the Griswolds.  Going to hit spend a couple days in Bozeman on way up to show the kids Yellowstone.  We did GTNP on way home last summer.  I have not been to Yellowstone in almost 20 years, so I am pumped.  Glacier entrance is about 35 minutes from my house, and I go there at least once a week during the summer.  I love hiking there.  The boy and I are going to section hike the Glacier portion of the Continental Divide Trail, which is something I have wanted to do for years.

We leave for Bozeman in 3 weeks for this grand family adventure. Staying at Mammoth Hot Springs hotel on the first night after gathering supplies outside of Bozeman. Next night is Canyon Lodge, followed by 2 nights at Old Faithful Inn. Then we head south to GTNP and stay on the lake at Signal Mountain Lodge for 3 nights. on our last day, we are going whitewater rafting out of Jackson. I haven't told my girls, 8 & 9, and I cant wait to see their faces.

I am anticipating them being on their tablets the entire car ride, and it is already killing me inside. I want this trip, the scenery, and the family time to make an impression on them as much as it did me when I was a little boy, but I need to temper those expectations, I think. Crossing my fingers for good weather.

We had a great trip. Flew into Salt Lake City, rented a car then went to Yellowstone, then to Grand Teton. Drove back down through Idaho and was blown away how pretty the area around Blackfoot Reservoir was. Unbelievable drive. Here are a few pics--none of them do the area justice.

Very north end of Grand Teton when you leave YS from the south entrance

String Lake. We actually swam here. It was freezing. Some guy from London saw us swimming and successfully convinced his wife to let him strip down to his undies and dive in.

Oxbow Bend.  We went here right at dusk to see if we could spot a moose. No luck, but it was beautiful.

Hiked to top of Inspiration Point. It was much higher up than the pic seems to show. I dug around in my backpack and found a banana. Daughter pulled this bag of crack from her backpack.  All the granola eaters were 'mirin'.  On the way up on the hike, we came upon a black bear--about 30 feet away. We moved on pretty quickly.

Speaking of bears, saw this one in Yellowstone. It was several hundred yards away. Still cool though. And about as close as I would want to get.
