And....Wemby on the bench. Yay "minutes."

hes still on a minutes restriction?? is it because of his frame?

It's partly the Spurs as an organization. Pop practically invented the intentional DNP, whether it was Timmy "DNP - old" or otherwise.

Then the Kawhi debacle which was the inverse of this, but maybe that "medical" fallout solidified a layer to injury rehab and floor time beyond just keeping key guys fresh.

Whatever the rationale, my personal view is it's stupid. A guy is recovered or he isn't. If he's recovered, especially your most impactful game-changing player, then use him and coach to win.

Even more so if it's say, 24 minutes in a tight game and a likely victory vs. 21 minutes and a loss.

Wemby could have played those final possessions and still been well under 24 minutes. Coaching malpractice that allowed them to triple team Fox (and further coaching malpractice that Fox felt like he wouldn't get an asschewing for still trying to play heroball when he knows there's at least two open guys who could have attempted better shots)

The minutes restriction.... I get. I don't know if there is enough empirical evidence to support it, but I still get it. It's become SOP.

But what is definitely 100% coaching malpractice is when Landale missed both free throws, not calling time out to get Sochan off the floor for that final possession. I was screaming at my TV. What the fuck? I get that Sochan was having an impact on the game defensively, but you can't have that guy on the floor on offense on that possession. You just can't. I'm on board with the idea of not calling a timeout to prevent the defense from setting up, but you have to take him out then. You just have to. I'd rliterally ather have any other player on the team taking an open jumper than him. I'd rather give Bismack fucking Biyombo an open 20 footer.

Beyond that... we are 36 games into the season, which is a large enough sample size that I can revisit my pre-season questions from the very first post on this thread with answers in orange:

The questions:

  • Is Mitch Johnson an even average NBA coach? I like that he shook it up and brought in his own staff and they all seem like great hires on paper, but I have zero expectations of him -- good or bad. I can't judge anything off of what he did last season given the circumstances. But that dude must pinch himself every day for the situation he inherited.

Last night definitely gave me pause, but I've otherwise been pretty pleased with how he's handled the team. They've had a lot of guys in and out of the lineup and they are second place in the west. I have to give the guy some credit.

  • I'm not as concerned about how Fox, Harper and Castle mesh as others seem to be, but Fox has been playing a certain way for a long time and he's going to have to adapt a bit.

The three headed point guard rotation has been great. Fox has been fantastic and he's adapted his role perfectly. I love the guy even though he had a pretty rough one last night.

  • I have fairly low expectations for Vassell, Keldon and Sochan... the pecking order has changed and these guys will need to learn how to fit in, but all three of their lives should be easier playing off of the rest of the team instead of having to initiate their own game. This is a pretty big year for all of them as it relates to their long term fit, so they better figure it the fuck out.

Keldon has been incredible. He's gone from one of the team's biggest disappointments to one of its most valuable players. He's having an amazing season and fits perfectly in his role. Vassell too has been really good. He's streaky, but he's definitely filled his role to maximize his impact on winning. Sochan has been an abject disaster absent his desperation insertion into the lineup last night. The Carter Bryant experiment hasn't been much better, but at least that guy is barely 20 years old. They both make me ill to watch.

  • Can anybody knock down an open three?

Objectively, no. It's awful. Outside of Champagnie, this team can't throw the ball into the ocean when they're standing on the beach. I mean holy fuck it's been atrocious for the last couple of weeks. I can't explain what happened but they are getting one wide open look after another and can't knock it down. In their last four losses, they have been outscored from three by 18, 27, 27 and 12 last night. They aren't winning shit shooting around 30% from three. Further, the lack of outside shooting is really clogging the lane for Castle, Harper and Fox. I'm too lazy to look up their non-three point shooting percentages over the last couple of weeks but none of them have been finishing at the rim (especially Harper and Castle) at the rate they were earlier in the season.

  • Will this team put in the effort to play championship level defense every night? Wemby covers up for a lot of sins but will the rest of the guys pick it up a notch?

The defense without Wemby hasn't been terrible. It's certainly better than it was last season. I think they play hard. Kornet has been great at defending at the rim. They are giving up too many wide open threes but I don't know how much of that is by design or as a result of teams ignoring the paint while Wemby is there, but overall I'm not upset with the defense especially with what we've seen over the past couple of years.

  • How will the league take the length?

The league seems to be taking it pretty well for the 24 minutes a night when he's leashed or on the shelf. Otherwise? Wemby still does some shit on offense that drives me crazy but I can't be too upset about 25-11. Schedule is about to get tough -- Lakers, Celtics, Wolves, OKC, Bucks, Wolves again, Jazz and Rockets over the next 13 days. They better start making some shots or they're going to get run off the floor in some of those.

I'm assuming, hoping, Mitch just has Wemby on a minutes restriction so he can get other players more time in the spotlight. He probably figures he's playing with house money right now, considering we're 2nd in the West and waaay ahead of schedule on the success train.

What other players? You know who the big men are. It's starting to mess with playing chemistry. How do you expect the team to find a groove if you don't play clutch minutes together? Why was Julian on the bench but sohan in the game on final possession? Why no timeout to draw a play? Poorly coached game. There is no house money. They should be playing for wins only a couple of games away from being 6th place.

Watching Mitch's post-game presser gave me the impression he was unhappy throughout the game, which led to him putting in odd lineups like Sochan for extended minutes. And then just letting that ride. It felt like "go ahead and see if you win playing like this".

Maybe it helps later like letting a kid do stupid shit until he "gets" that his way isn't working, and then he'll maybe listen to the adult in charge.

The concern I have is there's a stubborness on both sides. That's not great.

Like Castle needs to fucking sit if he's insisting on driving the ball directly into someone's chest each time and losing it 4 times a game. Just stop. Or get a screen and just pull up or pass quicker out of it.

I would agree with Mitch above that Johnson has done quite well overall. He's managed some good games and there is a chemistry and greater toughness from this team for the majority of the season, including while multiple key dudes were out.

So they're still ahead of schedule but the real coaching and test will be second half and the playoffs.

Castle has been exceptionally awful these last few games. Dude is fourth in the league in turnovers per game with a lower usage rate than the top three.

And I do hope Sochan gets more run tonight. Yeah, he can’t shoot, BUT he is such a fucking troll and if I have to watch these shitty games I at least want to be entertained.

These hoes problematic.

It’s just a social media post. It’s okay.

At the game and just saw Sochan hit four threes in a row during warmups. Sochan game winner incoming. Haha

Trae Young traded. Not sure if that helps the Hawks tanking chances, but hopefully

Unfortunately not. They are better without him.

that's how I've felt

Does Mitch not care about ballhandling at all? Is he asking them to make reckless passes and to dribble into traffic and off their own feet?

Can we just fucking trade Jeremy please? He's chasing butterflies thinking about his girlfriend's pussy and he has been all season. He'd do well with a change of scenery.

That three he just hit in the game, that's where he was hitting them from in warmups.

what's the point of having the all time greatest shotblocker if everyone helps off their man leaving shooters wide open

Man... I don't know if Bryant ever pans out but that was great leadership by Fox. He could have demanded the ball there but he let Carter do his thing. That's how you build confidence in rotation guys - especially rookies.

Aaaaaaand then he misses a dunk. Does this guy not know how to dunk the fucking ball? Good Lord.

come on. he didn't hang too long

Castle with 3 fouls already. And Carter Bryant might never make a dunk.

Castle has been dogshit for a few games now

Carter Bryant has the worst hands of any spur since Cadillac Anderson. I’m not sure his fingers actually function properly.

What the fuck is this whistle? God I hate the Lakers so fucking much.

Might as well pin this at the top of the thread.

Harper didn't get that call earlier.

Fuckass Lakers.

Also, the only two Spurs to make a three are Sochan and Keldon, and they each have only made one. Wow.

ESPN fucking sucks. How can they have a worse broadcast product than a regional network named after a betting app

KJ may be the biggest 180 I've ever had to do on a player.

What a fucking stud.

I like seeing LeBron on the bench knowing he has PTSD about this arena.

I really need Fox to hit a fucking 3 pointer.

Wemby has so much to figure out still. He should pull that first 3. He gets into a really difficult fadeaway 2 instead and misses.
