  1. Some of the quotes from the article: “Mayor and City Council seems to have no idea how much their decisions have negatively impacted APD and the citizens of Austin. Employee morale among sworn staff is so low,” said one written APD survey response. “It will take some repair and more visibility from City Manager Spencer Cronk to show support/restore trust. So many are retiring early. Swift action is needed.” “At the earliest time I can leave this department and retire, I will and not look back. The city has trivialized my profession and completely destroyed this department,” an APD employee wrote. “I don’t know any of my fellow officers who are not currently ‘looking for a way out.’ I was once very proud to call myself a COA employee with the APD. Now, it’s a different story.” “This city doesn’t support its police department even slightly. The City Council (with the exception of a single member) has proven time and time again over the past two years you couldn’t care less about us, including our physical and mental wellbeing,” an APD employee wrote. What are the cops butthurt about specifically (serious question)? As in, what has the city council/mayor/manager done which resulted in such poor morale?
  2. I didn't buy it. And to their credit they didn't really pressure me to. I said nevermind and cashier said okay. It was when I offered to return the case where I had gotten it that I detected the huffiness and they informed me they couldn't sell it. How about putting a fucking sign up with the price? Anyway, I'd generally assume a pool store would know more than I about sound business practices of selling pool shit, but it just seemed weird to me. Like does 12% bleach legally require different handling than 10% or something? I half thought to ask for an open box discount as I was walking out though.
  3. I can't find liquid chlorine last weekend at Walmart or HD, so I pop into Lesley's. They have boxes with 4 1-gallon jugs. I can't see a mfg date on the box, so I open it one to pull a jug out to check. Go to the checkout and they ring me up - $40 (12% bleach). Walmart sells 10% for $5/gallon, so it's double the price, granted for stronger bleach. So I tell the cashier, sorry, nevermind, and start to pick up the case to return it back where I got it. They got huffy and told me they couldn't sell it now that the box was opened - store policy. And the other employee grumbles about not knowing why I opened it in the first place. Am I missing something, or is that some level of stupid? I imagine bleach jugs are always shipped in cardboard, and stores must open the boxes to put individual jugs on the shelves all the time. How the fuck would that "taint" it?
  4. My take watching the review live was that it wasn't reviewable and the ref was trying to figure out a way to overturn because it was such a shit call.. that he made up the the bit about it being explained incorrectly so he could overturn it. By the time he figured a way out, he just went with it and neglected to review the safety, or decided in the moment that he'd already bent the rules a bit and left it at that. Have no idea if im right, but that's what I was thinking in the moment.
  5. I don't know the stipulations on the buyout, but $15m is never need to work again money, if you're at all smart.. plus the what, 20-30? million he made while coaching here. Seems Tom won.
  6. "FBI searched Trump’s home to look for nuclear documents and other items, sources say" https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/08/11/garland-trump-mar-a-lago/
  7. I put in a lot of new St Augustine in May after a pool build ruined half the lawn. Just in time for this mess.. Most of it is doing okay, but starting to die back in the no-shade areas now as you might expect. I'm torn between whether I should mostly stop mowing, let it grow longer to shade itself and retain what little moisture it's getting - vs - continue mowing weekly to encourage the roots to grow deeper. Any thoughts?
  8. Curious, how did you calcium get high? Shocking with Calcium hypochlorite?
  9. Btw, I don't think you need the app or wifi or anything, but I do regret not getting the caddy. Not the end of the world, but would be more convenient, for me at least.
  10. Someone asked about robots, this is what I had figured out a bit ago.. @RMac5
  11. I don't follow this stuff closely. Explain to me how the lesser schools cost the conferences money? Is it lost opportunity cost, or is it there some subsidizing going on? It seems like you have a game, you sell tickets. If the networks can sell advertising for ppl to watch, they televise the game and pay out a cut. If the program can't cover costs with ticket, merchandise sales, tv rev, donations etc then they would shit can the program. What am I missing?
  12. My buddy runs his gsp about two miles twice a day, and lets it run free frequently. It still has more energy to spare. It's a cool dog, but not for me. This one is pretty aloof too. Not really interested in anything except hunting (birds, squirrels, lizards) and running. Cool dog but not for me.
  13. I'm pretty averse to spraying poisons around my house/yard. I've had decent luck with this product surprisingly - it's all natural. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UJTBWE?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 It's a short term thing, lasts maybe a few hours, and likely only effective in small areas. But if I sprinkle it around the perimeter of my porch prior to guests coming over, it seems to help.
  14. In all the instances you cite, someone at work was sick or someone in his home was sick. Sounds like the guy doesn't want to get or spread germs. I'm all for people staying home when it's reasonable to do so to mitigate the risk of spreading shit - especially now. I got annoyed pre-covid when jackasses would go to the office with a cold. I don't want that shit - and spreading it around the office probably has a greater negative affect on productivity than WFH a couple of days does. If he's using "being sick" as an excuse to play hooky, that's one thing. If he's legitimately trying to be a responsible citizen during a pandemic, that's another.
  15. We signed a contract in April 2021 - dig started in June 2021. We have a pool we can swim in as of 4 weeks ago, but still waiting for electrical inspection, gas hook up, etc. Everything they did was fucked up in one way or another. We've been patient AF, but our builder sucks ass. I feel your pain.
  16. Do we have a spot for hall of fame threads? I'm specifically trying to track down the 1999 Big 12 Championship story thread if anyone has the link, but asking in general as well. edit: found it - question still stands I suppose:

Fuck yeah. That was tight at the near post, thought he'd lay it off.
  18. I'll be that sucker. I ended up hiring this guy to install the sod, and a bunch of other work (steel edging, making beds, river rocks, pavers, mulch, etc). It seems a tad high to me, but try even getting someone out right now for an estimate - for anything. It's a PITA - and I'm running out of time before the real heat gets here to get some grass established. This guy was easy to work with and flexible, gave me a full itemized list for everything we talked about, was able to get started quickly, and my neighbors have been happy with his work, so.. He didn't even ask for any money up front which surprised me - perhaps he will when he picks up material. Two guys have been going at it for 2 full 9 hour days now with pickaxes, shovels, and other equipment just doing the prep, digging down in the areas that will have rocks/mulch, removing rocks, etc. They haven't even delivered any of the rock, sod, pavers yet. It's definitely a job.
  19. Update: Got another quote from an independent guy that has done some work for other folks around the neighborhood. He quoted $1100 per pallet, to include grading/leveling, dirt, sod, delivery, etc. So $6,600 in my case. Still ain't exactly cheap, but much better.
  20. re: pool cleaners/robots - The TFP people all recommend going through this place to buy a robot: https://marinapoolspaandpatio.com/product-category/robotic-pool-cleaners-maytronics-residential/ There are videos and comparison sheets on their website which recommend the ones to buy. They are several models which are basically the same (made by Maytronics, sold as Dolphin and other brands). You have to call them and it's hard to get through, but they can't advertise their below MSRP prices so have to purchase by phone. The model I got (Dolphin explorer e30) was $800 which is $200 below MSRP and $100 cheaper than any advertise price on the internet - arrived in 4-5 days.
  21. Cross-posting from lawn thread - My yard has been destroyed with the pool install. Got a first quote to repair/re-sod. Coming in a tad north of $10K for what would include re-grading/leveling, 6 yards of lawn soil, and 6 pallets of st augustine - turnkey. In SW Austin. I've got a bit of sticker shock, but they have capacity to start soon and have great reviews. Feeling like I'm running out of time and yard will be an ugly mud pit if I can't get something to start growing very soon. Anybody with recent a pools build have to re-sod ? How did your quotes look?

  23. Do they use dogs in these Wise Co stops to alert from outside the vehicle, or rely on some probable cause or permission to search?
  24. Not sure if we need a new thread for 2022, or rather just a "forever" lawn thread .. above my pay grade. Anyway, I'll ask here. Contractors left a big pile of sand at my house. Would it be good, bad, or indifferent if I spread it out over the lawn. I have typical Austin rocky soil, St Augustine grass. Some areas seem to have a lot of clay, others less so from my experience digging in it.. Thanks.
  25. Maybe UV systems are good for people who don't take great care of their pools. In my experience using the TFP bleach method - once you have all your levels dialed in and you keep up with it (which is a pain in the ass, granted - daily bleach additions, testing, etc) - you don't get much of a chlorine smell/feel at all. You get that when there is something out of balance and the chlorine is doing lots of work to combat it. My suspicion is that bacteria is not the major culprit for putting the chlorine to work - rather algae and other organics are (I could be wrong here). I could see UV being good to keep the water sanitized even if your other levels are out of whack - i.e. too high CYA so chlorine not effective, too low chlorine, etc. But for those conditions you are going to get algae or other stuff which UV likely won't help with. So you're back to shocking the pool which makes it feel/smell like chlorine. And I maintain that the sun will break down the chlorine fast enough that I can't really see the UV system significantly reducing the need for additions. I could be wrong, but that's my semi-informed opinion on it.
