  1. Fior sounds similar but just remembered -- it was Tommasos. It's what I'd call a classic red sauce Italian joint -- simple menu and dishes but very good. Also it was great for kids (even though it was across the street from the Hustler club and next door to a sex shop). 1042 Kearny Street in North Beach. Stella was the name of the bakery that was so good. It's probably a block and a half or so from Tommasos and City Lights.
  2. Just last week we did 4 days there with our 5 and 7 year olds. We stayed at the Hotel Vitale on the corner of Mission and the Embarcadero nearly directly across the street from the Ferry Building. The hotel was fine with kids and the location was great. We walked across the street and ate breakfast in the Ferry Building every morning (a bunch of little bakeries and they have a killer farmers' market on Saturday) and then headed down the water from there (trolley a couple of times, pedicab a couple of times, walked a couple of times) to see the wharf, exploratorium, aquarium, sea lions, etc. One day we ubered to golden gate park, explored that area, and then ubered to North Beach to eat at a little bitty Italian joint that's been there since the 1930's (trying to remember the name will ask my wife and report back). It was great but my favorite part was the Saturday night post-supper walk through North Beach back to the hotel. That area is super dense and has a true urban feel. It also still has a little bit of an edge to it and it was packed Saturday night. Seeing all of those people (and all kinds of people -- homeless, tourists, long time locals, partying young professionals, etc.) packed into such an urban setting really blew my kids' minds. They loved it and I loved seeing them react to it. My 7 year old daughter told me the next morning that she wanted to go to college in SF and live in North Beach. We also stopped at City Lights book store and told them about the beat stuff and a great little Italian bakery. We also had a great teaching moment that night as a homeless guy went apeshit pretty close to us when we were walking back to the hotel. I told the kids to just ignore him keep looking straight ahead and keep walking and when we got back to the hotel we had a good talk about how that kind of shit happens sometimes and that it's ok and this is how you handle yourself, etc. The last day we rented a car through the hotel (it was very easy (they bring it to hotel and you leave it at valet that night when you get back) and we got a decent rate) and did Muir Woods and then saw some family in Sonoma. Muir Woods was great and the kids really enjoyed it. Sonoma was fine and we had to go to see family but I probably wouldn't recommend going all the way out there when there's so much other cool kid stuff to do. Also had really good dim sum at Yank Sing (I think they have 2 locations and both are walking distance from Vitale).
  3. This is true. My wife thinks I'm insane. I told her this (suburban w/ level kit and big tires) is my midlife crisis and as far as those go this one's pretty tame so she should be grateful.
  4. Well fuck. I was thinking mine were 20's but they're 22's (305/45/22) so I'm definitely going to have to get new wheels too. Anyone want some sweet 22 inch wheels?
  5. That's the exact question I've asked the guys at discount and they're telling me that if I want more sidewall and the more traditional truck off-road look that, yes, I do need to get different wheels. They showed me what they say is the closest to what i want with my current 20's (I think it's called the grappler all terrain) and, while a bit closer, it still isn't what I'm looking for. Anyone here knowledgeable enough in this area to confirm or expand on what the guys at discount are telling me?
  6. Thanks for the info. One more question -- the suburban came with after-market wheels. They're nice (black, low profile, maybe 20's or so but don't allow for more off road higher sidewall tires I want) but don't really fit with what I'm going for (which is more like your truck above). Any thoughts on the best place / method of getting the most I can for the wheels I'm getting rid of? Your truck looks great by the way.
  7. I posted this in an uber on the way downtown and 30 minutes later the sorry motherfucker and his buddy Cruz walk right by our table and sit down in the back of the place. Guy with me used to work with Ted and we all agreed he'd say hi and call him over to visit when they were leaving and I'd try and shame him for the wall bullshit and tell him and goeb they were horrible people. We had a long dinner and a bunch of wine and they were still back there and we're fat and old so we left. Cool story I know. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. So I just read on the statesman that that carpet bagging worthless sack of shit Dan Patrick volunteered to have Texas pay for part of this nonsensical wall? Holy fucking shit!! I think I've just got to stop paying attention or I'm gonna stroke out from rage.
  9. picked up a new suburban recently and would like to get it leveled (maybe lifted but probably just leveled). any suggestions for someone to do that work in Austin?
  10. Austin's restaurant scene has really exploded in recent years and it's hard (for me, at least) to keep up but here are a few that have been around for a while that we typically take out of town friends to: nice traditional (kind of french american / steakhouse) -- jeffrey's sushi / japanese / james beard winner -- uchi (my longtime favorite in Austin -- uchico is great too but i prefer the smaller original uchi) fancy-ish bbq / Texas food (maybe not top tier bbq (save that for franklins, valentina's, etc.) but everything els on the menu is very good) and good downtown / walkable area -- lamberts good italian south congress walkable -- vespaio good seafood south congress walkable area -- perla's good seafood not quite as walkable but pretty close to other bars / restaurants -- clark's nice southern (and i think a james beard finalist) -- olamaie Jeffrey's, lamberts, perlas, and clarks are part of the mcguire moorman group (they also do elizabeth street (good vietnamese) and a few other places you can check out on their website). They're pricey (and some would say overpriced) but i think they're all excellent.
  11. Searched and didn't see a Chicago thread. We have a long weekend there in June and I'm looking for recs on dining and lodging. Schedule is to fly in Friday early / midday, walk around and see some of the sights, dinner Friday night, Saturday walk around and see the sights, going to a show at Wrigley Saturday night, and fly back Sunday. Any suggestions on where to stay? I'd like to be somewhere that lends itself to walking around and seeing the typical attractions. We've stayed at Soho House in other cities and really like it but i don't know much about Chicago and don't know if it's in a good spot for what we're wanting (it's on Green Street). I stayed at the Drake one time and liked it. We've also been told the Park Hyatt is a good place. Anyone have any other suggestions? For dinner, we're thinking about Alinea Friday night but are certainly open to other options. Anyone have any suggestions if you had one dinner in Chicago? What about lunch and things to do Saturday during the day? Any info is appreciated.
  12. He messed up the score going to commercial twice.
  13. Long day trip today - flew out of Austin at 8 arrive at 10 in no lunch at mr bs grilled shrimp and gumbo (good not great more familiar old school and comfort food like) hearing at 2 then meet friends for drinks then supper at the bar at Revolution before 10 pm flight home. Had a half order of lobster gnocchi and new flounder oyster polenta dish they have. Both were very very good (our remaining hobby after kids is eating well and both of these dishes were memorably good). Uber back to airport now thinking about that flounder.
  14. I volunteered for a film festival in college and ended up driving Sam Elliot around town for 2 days. He was very laid back and cool to me. Most of the time it was just him and me, including a great breakfast at the Driskill. When I dropped him off at the airport he shook my hand and gave me a hug and told me to keep fighting the good fight. It was awesome.
  15. agree with this. we spent time in tokyo (ate really well and also enjoyed walking around the fish market and took in a Giants game at the Tokyo dome) then took the bullet to kyoto which was also great. on the way back we spent 2 nights at a ryokan (sp?) in Hakone and it was awesome -- built on the side of a mountain looking over this valley -- really beautiful).
  16. Looks like I'm finally going to have to break down and get a new (or used) vehicle. I'm looking at suburbans or tahoes and need advice on: (1) best time to buy new -- looks like Covert and other area dealerships have some pretty good deals on 2018's -- is now the time to buy or will those prices continue go down as we get closer to the new year? (2) are dealers less likely to come down on listed pricing since these 2018's are already discounted and pitched as year end deals? (3) does it make more sense to buy used if my used criteria would be something less than 40 or 50K miles? I'm traditionally opposed to the idea of buying new but maybe it makes sense if all of the 'gently used' options are only a few thousand less than the new 2018's? For what it's worth, I plan on driving whatever I get for at least a decade or so and don't put many miles on my vehicles (I currently have a 2002 Chevy crew cab with only 140K miles). Any help is appreciated.
  17. Answered my own question - sitting at the bar at Revolution.
  18. In town for just a night solo. Revolution or mr bs for dinner?
  19. Is Johnny Miller in love with Keegan Bradley? Did he start crying when they were talking about it at the end of the broadcast?
  20. this is exactly what I'm looking for -- easy grilling during the week. reviews look great. thanks!
  21. Best fire starter to use with a large egg?
  22. There was a Giovanni's in the Brazos mall in lake Jackson when I was growing up. It was mall pizza but it was awesome - much better than the standard food court stuff. At least that's how I remember it. I always assumed it was a chain but I've searched and searched on the Internet and can't find any mention of it. My search is complicated by the fact that Giovanni's is probably the most common name for a pizza place.
  23. Torrey update: couldn't get through to reservation line so went out cold. Got off to a bit of a slow start today and didn't get there until 8:00 or so. Put my name on the list and got called 10 minutes later. Me and 2 other singles on the south course. Weather was perfect. It was awesome. Hit it pretty good for me. Other 2 guys were about my level and age. Quick round done by 1 or so. Great day!
  24. That's what I'm going to do. Is it best to walk the course? Thanks, Dad!
