  1. That sounds like the opening sentences of a compelling story.
  2. Smart kid!
  3. Marimont Cafeteria. They also had a store south of the river that later became the south Threadgills location.
  4. Chez Zee and Fonda San Miguel immediately come to mind. If you aren't scared of chain places, Maggiano's and Buca di Beppo have good private rooms for parties that size.
  5. Amazing how much knowledge and expertise is demonstrated on this board!
  6. Good story. My wife's great uncle died in a B-17 crash in England, right after take-off. They apparently pushed the limits on fuel weight to give them margins to make it home from their bombing mission. A B-17 full of gas and loaded with bombs -- what could go wrong? RIP James and crew.
  7. VISIT THE TRAINING GROUNDS WHERE B-17 CREWS LEARNED THEIR CRAFT When Boeing began churning out more than 12,000 of the heavy bombers, the army looked for sparsely populated places to train. Northern Montana fit the bill nicely. https://www.historynet.com/b-17-training-montana-wwii/
  8. The Death and Life of Congress Avenue’s Neglected Historic Buildings https://austin.towers.net/the-death-and-life-of-congress-avenues-neglected-historic-buildings/?pro=caitlyn@towers.net
  9. Lest we forget about Austin's demonstrated expertise in executing complex rail transportation projects...
  10. Hard to get away from doing business with "Big Food", no matter how hard you try. Personally, I celebrate Herdez's entire catalog.
  11. Asset/Liability maturity matching is Banking 101. I'm not sure exactly what happened here, but it is a major (and very predictable) fuck up in the current interest rate environment. The over classification of so much of their assets as HTM hid their huge embedded losses. I don't think that it would have taken the "stress test" to identify this risk.
  12. IDK. I thought that there was some connection between those two stores.
  13. An acquired taste, for sure!
  14. No obvious connection that I can see. NY version is a Mexican food joint. Austin's was a burger joint that may have also had nachos and maybe some enchiladas -- especially at the 6th street store.
  15. But then you miss out on the delicious hearts, kidneys, and livers!
  16. The parking at Tavern is a big plus.
  17. Nicely done. Tavern and Dirty Martin's props. Do the Texas Chili Parlor next time!
  18. Are you kidding me? Hank the Cowdog. My kids loved all of that, especially out at the deer lease when they were able to see what Hank was talking about. http://www.hankthecowdog.com/
  19. Two thoughts: It kept me out of a lot of trouble. I still know how to make a great pizza. So, I'd say yes.
  20. I may be done with WB. I had a very uninspired Jap (no racist) Cheese burger last week at the Corpus Christi Bayfront Mecca store. Ordered fries with it. $3.71 for a very small order of soggy fries. There must be better things to eat than that. Yay, private equity!
  21. Late to the thread, but I worked as an assistant manager (not an assistant to the manager!) at a Pizza Hut in HS in the 1970s. I'd have to get in at 5 am to make the dough for the day. Huge stand mixer with a dough hook that could take your arm off. Flour, water, salt, yeast. Wait for it to rise. Thick or thin crust -- all made on site. The sauce came out of a can and the meats and cheeses were out a box from the freezer, but we prepped and chopped all of veggies on site. No pre-packaged portions, either. We made some pretty good pies back then.
  22. My take is that there are so many spammy cold-call emails going on in this space that it is hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.
  23. And they are likely all made at the same plant in Mexico. All of our stuff has a Whirlpool or Kenmore nameplate on it.
