  1. CHIEF Jr, son, I didn't even know you posted here. CHIEF
  2. Oh brother, don't get me started on Reds and Specks. They cost me more than caviar or black truffles. CHIEF
  3. Well, with bad weather rolling in, we parked Mrs. CHIEF's GS-F and my white 4x4 F350 in the shop and brought out Mrs. CHIEF's old car, or "Hoopty" as she calls it. 253k miles and is still the best 4x4 we have ever owned. She will never be sold. 2003 V8 4Runner: Bought her new in 2003. Pushbutton locking diff, full time AWD. This is the kind of weather where she shines. CHIEF

    Eggs

A raw quail egg and uni shooter would be my requested drink for my last meal if I was about to be put to death. CHIEF
  5. And that's what sucks. You have YEARS invested in passing up bucks to let them mature. We are very selective. There have been multiple years on our leases where a trigger was never pulled, not even culls or does. And to what end? Only to get fucked over by a greedy landowner. When we owned our land that we hunted on in Bosque county, we tried to let bucks mature. The 917 acre ranch that bordered us on the East was bought and cut up into VA tracts. There were blinds within 300 yards of each other. I passed up a mainframe 10 point that might have been as old as 3 1/2. Watched him jump the fence and promptly get shot. That year, Dad sold the ranch and we started hunting big ranches out west. It feels like we are playing "whack a mole", you sell out to get rid of a problem, only to have another problem rear its ugly head while leasing. It's going to get to the point that only mid six figure guys will be able to afford the sport. I am a low fence guy, and am staunchly against "canned" hunts, for myself personally. Hunting is less about the hunting and more about the camarderie and time spent with family and friends. But the idea of a three day, low fence, trophy hunt is becoming more appealing. I just can't fathom the idea of a guide putting me on a big buck. That's my job, and my ego tells me I would be better at his job than he is. That is my dilemma. All of my family that I hunt with are the same way. We are fantastic hunters and consistently shoot the biggest and most mature bucks on our leases. But not one of us will probably pull the trigger unless a buck goes 160+. Day hunts and being in proximity with hunters that don't have the same mentality ruin it for everyone. I understand hunting for meat. But let's be honest, unless you own the land, filet mignons are cheaper per pound than deer meat. But there is a mindset that you have to have something to show for your money. That's what culls and does are for. CHIEF
  6. One of my favorite jokes, is an Atheist and an Agnostic are marooned on an uninhabited island and are both about to die of starvation. In final desperation, the Atheist decides he is going to pray. The Agnostic tells him, "you have never set foot in a Church, you don't know how to pray". The Atheist tells him he walked by the Catholic Church enough that he heard them praying and will pray based off of what he heard. So he humbles himself, gets down on his knees to pray.....N19....N19....G23....G23. Thanks. I'll be here all week, don't forget to tip your waiters and waitresses. CHIEF
  7. The landowners are from there, you aren't going to get damages from the motherfuckers, you just get to breach the contract. Which is what the landowner wants. Try to sue the Swenson Ranch in Haskell, or Stonewall County, the ranch has had an office on the courthouse square for a hundred years. CHIEF
  8. Yep, it is pretty rampant from what I hear. A lot of these ranches want the regulars to keep a "harvest log". Fuck that. You shoot something nice, and even if you have a contracted price locked in for ten years, they go up on the price. If you sue, the only recourse is to let you out of your lease as a lessee. Property rights are definitely rigged towards the landowner, as they should be. But it sucks none the less. Most require you to move your shit off in 72 hours, which requires everyone on the lease to drop what they are doing, take off work, and rush to the ranch with four flatbed trailers, a tractor, and several 4-wheel drives. My old man had to leave several $2k+ blinds that had been sat in maybe six times. It's why he started his mobile deer blind business. CHIEF

    Eggs

Yep, it, and rice. 2/3rd's of the Earth's population go to bed with these two items in their belly each night. CHIEF
  10. He marks up the rate he gets it for by a dollar an acre or so. My Dad and him were very close. So I get to move to the front of the line on leases. Also, he knows I am paying for two spots, he gives it to me at his cost. He is an all North and Northwest Texas guy. He may have something coming up in Clay County right on the Red River coming up for me to look at. He had to trim down his leasing acreage a bit. He had some landowners running day hunts on leased land when they knew the regular hunters were not going to be there. He also changed a policy where you had to call them and let them know you were coming. Landowners can be real shitty. CHIEF
  11. Yeah, that's generally the area we hunt, My buddy that has about 500,000 acres of leases said everyone is holding pretty tight this year. We went to Cisco Wednesday and looked at a 415 acre place for four guns at $2250 a pop, but it has no water or electricity, and we are tired of fooling with generators. The good thing, is I get first dibs on anything that comes open out of that 500k acres. I imagine something will come open if the stock market starts to tank a bit, which I think could happen with the drop in consumer spending slowing the velocity of money. CHIEF
  12. If anyone ever needs to repower, let me know. CHIEF Jr.'s shop gets Tohatsu's for about $100 per hp. A 90 horse is $9k, a 150 runs $15k, etc. He said as soon as you pull the cowl off, the first thing you see, is the made by Honda Corp. stickers. They are the same exact engine, only one is painted black. He said he is hearing the price on that Verado, is about $100-120k a pop. Ouch. You can buy the Marine Seven with a LSA (627 hp Cadillac CTS-V motor) for about $80k. CHIEF
  13. This morning was the kind of day that makes me appreciate my rural life. My buddy Arthur called and was working on getting a driveway ready to pour, the dirt and gravel had been driven over for probable about 30 years, and was just as hard as cement, so he needed to borrow my skidsteer . I've been trying to help him get back on his feet after him being in the hospital with COVID. It's funny sometimes we think doing God's work is just throwing dollar bills at people, sometimes he requires you to get your ass out of your comfy bed, and help them with manual labor in 21 degree cold, with 20 mph winds. Anyway, of course, I go pick it up, fill it with diesel, and deliver it to him: One of our favorite little food spots is this little old gas station, El Solar, the make really good quesadillas, breakfast burritos, and the best menudo I have ever eaten, really cleaned well. So, I take the back road over to drop the skidsteer off, which passes right by El Solar. I made my order, they make everything from scratch, so it was going to be about 20 minutes. Perfect amount of time to go drop off the skidsteer and come back. The whole time this morning, I never had anybody else on the road, got to drive like an old farmer, 30-40 mph with no one ever in the rearview mirror. Get back to El Solar a little early, the owner asked me where was CHIEF Jr., by his real name. Of course, I tell him the truth, his ass is still in bed. Watched a little soccer, it was in Spanish, only thing I could tell is it was in a stadium in Mazatlan. But it's just a really cool little back road place. My favorite sign in the whole place: Got the menudo to go, with chili covered lollipops for desert: Enough to make three bowls: Now it's time for a siesta, before going down to the 19th Hole. CHIEF
  14. Holy shit. The guy in that FJ not only lived, he walked away after being cut out. You can see him come in the screen about :47, he gets hit at about 1:03. CHIEF
  15. My master bath is sitting at 50 degrees, even with the thermostat, on that end set at 68. It's always cold as fuck in there. I went to get a small heater to put in the garage that is pointed at the wall where the outside spigot is. We have a larger bathroom heater that I turned on and opened up the vanity cabinet to circulate heat under the sink and to the pipes. I bet the plastic on that little heater I pulled out from under there was 40 degrees, even with 3 1/2 inches of foam insulation in the exterior wall. We have been below freezing since Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, and it looks like we won't be back above it, till Thursday/Friday of next week. CHIEF
  16. Same with me, my son, two uncles, and their sons. Budgeting about $3k per gun, since I have to pay for two spots. CHIEF
  17. Exactly, anyone with a great vision for our country, and is really sharp, realizes that it just isn't worth it. Because that is going to have to include good ideas from both sides of the isle, blowing off the special interests, and getting it implemented. CHIEF
  18. I feel like such a pussy. I was at the welding shop that does my contract work, and my client from Red Deer, Alberta called. I told him we may only get to work on his project for a day or two next week because of the cold and icy weather. He just laughed, and said he would go broke if he only worked the winter schedule we do. It was -44 degrees fahrenheit at his shop, and they were chugging along just fine. CHIEF
  19. I've been told that on an offshore boat that 27' is the minimum length you should go because of ride comfort. Apparently a 27' will not drop into the trough between waves, but shorter boats will. Anyone of you with experience ever hear that, or have a thought on it? I don't know if that is based off of the normal 2-3 foot seas that seem to be what most people going offshore would experience most of the time. CHIEF
  20. I remember the last real asswhipping I got was in the 8th grade. My Dad was sitting in his home office, and our rifles were in a rack in the closet. He had always showed me how to release the pressure off of the firing pin on a Mauser action (bolt action). My firing pin was still sticking out, but I knew I had unloaded it before putting it in that closet. But being lazy, I just decided to dry fire it. Well, my grandfather had used it, and I hadn't been told, so I shot a hole in the ceiling. My Dad grabbed his ears and kinda slump forward, my Mom screamed bloody murder, cause she thought I had killed him. He just turned gave me a look and told me to lay on the guest bed in the next room. I knew what was up, and then comes that horrifying sound of his belt sliding out through the belt loops. It was brutal, but well deserved. I learned a lesson, always make sure your Dad isn't wearing a belt during gunplay. CHIEF
  21. Isn't that the truth. I mean, I support free birth control. I don't believe in Medicaid for all, but that should just pass a means test, and if you can afford it, you can go to doctors that only take private insurance. What needs to happen is the salary qualification for Medicaid needs to be raised to something like $120k-150k. Generally, if you are making that much, it is employer provided. But a 4 person family can only make about $52k to qualify, that is insanity. That would be the quickest fix, as the system is already in place. Another idea is to offer to pay off student loans of nurses, nurse practitioners, and recent medical school graduates if they are willing to move to areas that are remote enough to have inadequate medical facilities. Provide them housing and a modest salary, for a set period of time. Also, why can't we offer the first two years of a junior college or trade school for free? There are so many good medical jobs that only require an Associates degree, and most all of the trade schools programs are less than two years. If you do well, you will qualify for scholarships, at worst you only have 2-3 years of college to pay for. CHIEF Jr. went to UTD for his first year, total expense was about $50k, one day he came in and said, it was just too damn expensive, and didn't want to put that financial strain on our family. He came home, went back to his job, and went to Hill College three semesters, each 15-17 hour semester was at most $1800, his Tarleton semesters run about $4300. He has zero student loans, and all we provide him is roof over his head, and food on the table. Finally quite moving to a system like China's Social Credit system. There, if you are critical of the government, go to the wrong bars, you might be a Christian...etc. It lowers your "Social Credit" rating. If it gets too low, you can't use public transportation, you can't use a bank, you are ostracized. We are seeing some of that with the Cancel Culture uprising in the US today, the idea of a COVID Passport. People are not allowed to have differences of opinion. You find me a candidate, that runs on some of that, and completely ignores any second amendment rhetoric, I don't care if the are Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, man, woman, transgender, gay, straight, Christian, Atheist, Budist, liberal Muslim, Dem, or Republican, I'm voting for them. CHIEF
  22. Fuck, where do you buy all the lasers? CHIEF Jr. has a 12 foot square screen and a projector, and some crazy ass surround sound that you can hear at the grocery store. That reminds me of going to the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour in 1987 at Reunion Arena. My friend, Clinton and I had big heavy jackets. I had a ski jacket, he had a trench coat, we would be shot today. We smuggled a case of beer in to the concert. As you can imagine, when we started chuggin' on the first one, all the cottonmouthed motherfuckers came out of the woodworks. We traded beers for so much coke, acid, pot, and Molly, fuck, we didn't have to go searching till we both swore off that shit, and grew up. We did all that shit in the middle of a 33,000 acre ranch, I remember pulling all the shit off my old Bronco one night, while trippin'. I drove that bitch home with both front fenders and the hood in the back. This probably needed to be on the Music board, buttfuck it. CHIEF
  23. Hummed some "Us and Them" it definitely worked. Might want to add that-PSA CHIEF
  24. I just love piñon. Nothing like it you 1%er you. Reminds me of Taos and Santa Fe in the winter. CHIEF
