  1. Part of what's wrong with him is that we evidently don't have anyone better. A truly frightening thought, because he's becoming the Maldonado of shortstops.
  2. They gagged that away so effortlessly.
  3. If we suddenly swapped coaching staffs with aggy, what would each team's record be?
  4. That's been the craziest thing to me, to be this far over .500 despite the wildly up-and-down performances. Maybe several guys have been more dinged up than we heard they were, but we've had no notable stretch of every key guy playing decent to great. Altuve hot, Bregman cold. Tucker mashing, Chaz slumping. Valdez cruising, Brown in a funk. Or so it seems to me. Throw in the many missed games by 27 and 44, along with the underuse of Diaz, and it's really a wonder we're in the position we are.
  5. Plus the bullpen. At least now we're sometimes getting far enough ahead that calling on Montero isn't always fatal.
  6. For as sporadically as we've pitched, hit and played D this year, by our recent standards, and for as hot as our "neighbors" were for months, today's standings are remarkable. It's still hard for me to be confident without seeing longer stretches of consistency and health, but hopefully we've survived the worst of both. At least I'm not hearing anything about Arlington's magic number any more.
  7. He's a B2 bomber that keeps missing missions because we're always out of fix-a-flat.
  8. Come Oct. 1, I'd certainly take playing well in the final WC spot over leading the West with key guys gimpy or our rotation still a train wreck.
  9. Not sure I've ever seen a reliever throw 22 pitches in a 1-2-3 inning. Nice, Hector.
  10. Bregman needs to show up and show out.
  11. Speaking of which, how's Moose doing these days? I assume his knuckles are healing well.
  12. We needed to bring our A game. We didn't. So...not a shocking series outcome. But as many have noted, there's plenty of time to still make a run. This is the kind of stretch in which we really miss Brantley or a similarly dependable bat. Steady hitters like him aren't going to carry an offense, but they sure help bridge gaps and keep innings going long enough for the next hot bat to do damage with men on base. This year we've had very few back-to-back hot bats in the lineup at any one time. That puts extra pressure on the secondary guys to string together enough singles and walks to score. Big innings don't tend to be the result. I can think of much worse ideas than trying Diaz at 2 between Altuve and Tucker. As long as he's somewhere in the lineup every day, that matters most of all.
  13. Maybe give JJ another shot. Hard to imagine he'd hit worse than our current bench brigade. Then again, if he can't also throw 6 innings of 2-run ball, he's not turning this ship around by himself.
  14. In retrospect, was Seattle the toughest team we faced last fall? I think so. They came within a couple swings of knocking us out. They might not have improved much since then, at least on paper, but we've for sure taken a big step back.
  15. Right now we're so lifeless I almost expect us to win 7-6. I said almost.
  16. At least it's almost football season.
  17. I think that's the most optimistically it can be put. Any other scenario is even more grim.
  18. Alternating double-digit scoring games with getting held to 3 or fewer is how you average quite a few runs and yet still lose quite a few games. Few staffs these days pitch well enough to win many of the latter.
  19. I agree we're definitely in the mix. My point is that winning two titles with different rosters and managers in different competitive environments was great but has nada to do with this year's squad. We haven't consistently played at even a division-winning level thus far. Can we? I think so, provided we get and stay healthy. But we all realize it will take much better play (and strategy) to get us there. I really hope that starts tonight, and it needs to.
  20. This particular team hasn't won anything. Hopefully that changes, but it will take a serious surge. I'm just not seeing sustained evidence of it.
  21. I'm now prepared to get swept this weekend and will pleasantly surprised if we aren't. I suppose we can't help whatever is ailing Tucker, but his absence only ramps up the need to field our best possible available lineup. Instead, we get this misarranged hodgepodge from the Dustinator. Of course, he knows all and will keep trying to prove it.
  22. Is Peña involved in more 6-3 outs as a defender or as a hitter? Serious question, because I think it's a close call.
