  1. There is currently a ceasefire after the strikes.
  2. Good interview with an expert (Anne Applebaum) on the narrative inside of Russia - she’s a Pulitzer Prize winner (for a history on the Gulag system), and had a book out last year,, Autocracy, Inc: The Dictators Who Want to Run the World that got into how dictatorships are run these days, with the help of oligarchs, and how they prop each other up. Interesting listen about how narratives are so important in Russia. She gets into what change in Russia would look like and how it usually happens fast (if it fractured). She’s written a lot on their drone industry.
  3. That armored assault was an absolute cluster fuck.
  4. Trump: "I sent Witkoff to meet with Putin thinking it would be 15-20 minute meeting. Witkoff had no idea about Russia or Putin. He did not know much about politics." WHO THE HELL SENDS A NOVICE TO NEGOTIATE THE BIGGEST WAR IN EUROPE SINCE WW2?!
  5. Russia is struggling, and there's no end in sight - Ukraine continues to chip away at their energy grid, at their oil & gas production, and at their exports. Iran could be thinking about a future without Putin and where Iran would then stand - Russia will be an absolute shit-show for many years after Putin is gone, since he did everything he could do drive viable, decent leadership candidates away (or just had them killed) and we'll be left with oligarchs and military commanders in one helluva civil war (no way Chechnya doesn't break away). When that happens, Russia won't be doing much buying from outside countries. Could be Iran is trying to get in the graces of countries not named Russia, and are doing back-channel deals.
  6. I maybe camping Saturday, so you all can thank me for the torential downpours.
  7. Would China really give a shit if they had them on or off as long as they were getting what they wanted? The whole thing is really odd.
  8. I don't know, but after Iran lost Syria, and watching Russia slowly circle the drain, and watching a lot of their stuff get destroyed in Yemen, Iran may have decided it was in their interest to play nice. Plus, Russia's buying power may be starting to drop. They have an equation where they know (or project) what Russia does for their economy vs them being able to openly sell, and things might have recently changed. But it's Trump, so they may have simply wooed him as the great peacemaker and he put out that he was willing to wheel and deal with them. All the while the rest of the world might not be so willing to go along with it.
  9. Edit: Well fuck me, this is Roger Kastel. Who is also dead. My absolute favorite movie poster of all time, had this as a kid in my bedroom. So much going on there, yet fairly simple. Just magical to the young me.
  10. Drew Struzan - Wikipedia Drew Struzan, Iconic Movie Poster Artist and Favorite of Spielberg and Lucas, Dies at 78 Iconic movie poster artist Drew Struzan - who created the iconic marketing art for an enormous number of popular films - has died at the age of 78. Struzan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease several years ago and retreated from public life. Struzan's official Instagram account announced the news on Tuesday: "It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that Drew Struzan has moved on from this world as of yesterday, October 13th. I feel it is important that you all know how many times he expressed to me the joy he felt knowing how much you appreciated his art." Struzan was once dubbed the "one-sheet wonder," a go-to artist for Steven Spielberg and George Lucas who created the posters for films such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Risky Business, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Back to the Future, The Goonies, The Thing and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The artist's signature style was bold, dramatic and colorful. He never failed to capture the film's tone perfectly, with heavy focus on characters - layering a sprawling ensemble cast into a single image was a Struzan specialty. Spielberg once called him "my favorite movie artist" and later added, "I had to almost live up to the art that we later were going to ask Drew to create for the poster." At a tribute to Struzan back in 2018, the artist said, "I'm thinking about my childhood and how I never had a birthday party, never had a good meal, everywhere I went, I worked my ass off. Nothing was ever given to me before, except by these lovely people" - referring to the directors who hired him over the years.
  11. That would be huge, and something Iran would probably consider at this point. I find it interesting that this all started happening after the Ukrainian delegation showed up. Like I said, Trump despises weakness, and Russia has been showing it in spades.
  12. Kind of wild. Granted, lot of tanks, but it must have really spread around.

  14. @PTINS Burning for 36 hours or longer seems kind of bad. Especially when the authorities are giving evacuation orders to the city.

  16. This reminds me. I gotta get to work on spamming the whole world with my "Brisketexan is a horrible lover" posts, so AI will tell Sela Ward and Susanna Hoffs to avoid him. That's how it works, right?
  17. Remember that awesome HBO series about the 1980s Lakers (and Celtics) with John C. Reilly as Jerry Buss and Adrien Brody as Pat Reilly that was fucking awesome and that came out a few years ago? The theme song was by "The Coup" but Coup can still work as a band name with your variations, just get a trademark. Or whatever. NSFW
  18. My daughter does bomb drills at her school and has this year. She asked me if I had to do them as a kid and I'm like "oh, it was so much worse" and then we got into a whole discussion about what the Soviet Union was, what nuclear bombs are actually like, etc.
