  1. Type “Amen” if you think America would be a better place if college professors spent their class time praying to Jesus instead of teaching kids how to commit crimes.
  2. A big problem with the SWA system is the gamesmanship. Saving seats, F5-ing the check-in screen 24 hours before boarding, and dubious preboards. I get it for folks who have a legit disability. No issue there. But on SWA, if you’re skittish or shameless, you can board and choose your preferred seat before all the people who paid 2x for priority. Bonus points if you bring along a lapdog in one of those “Emotional Support Animal” harnesses. We all have problems, Snowflake. Board with the riffraff and self-medicate with booze like the rest of us do.
  3. Fuck you. I’m not doing that shit and you can’t make me.
  4. Even if power goes out on a rolling or sustained basis, this won’t be nearly as dangerous as the last one. The temps will be higher, so home interiors won’t get dangerously cold. And there’s no precip in the forecast, so people can drive to hotels or friends / family to warm up. Plus we’re not in Covid lockdown, another factor that stuck people in their own homes despite lack of utilities last go round. I figure if the power goes out for more than a couple of hours, I’ll drain the plumbing, drive the family to a hotel, and make a mini vacation out of it. That wasn’t an option in February 2021.
  5. I have serious PTSD from the 2021 storm. We had no power or water for 5 days. All told we lost power for a significant stretch 3 times that winter. But that was (hopefully) different, for a few reasons: 1. We had significant snow and ice, which fucked up power lines all over the state / city. 2. It was much colder, much longer. Pretty sure there was a stretch of 48 hours where the temp didn’t get above 20 F and a longer stretch significantly below freezing. We’re only looking at one day where the highs don’t get above freezing. 3. The state had yet to fix its power grid by connecting a shitload of crypto miners to it, which will provide a free market incentive for massive new investment in power generation and distribution before Thursday. That said, I’ll be ready to fire up the generator if needed.
  6. Very insightful. Trump has a fixed base of support and it’s a large chunk of the GOP electorate at this point. One of those polls had Trump at 45%, Desantis at 30%, and the field splitting the rest. So the GOP could be 55% Never Trumpers but it’s also 45% Only Trumpers. Hopefully that fucks them in 2024. Either they nominate Trump and the undecideds kick his ass along with the GOP congressional slate. Or they nominate Not Trump and he has a hissy fit and 45% of the GOP voters are pissed off, leading many to stay home or write-in for Trump or spite vote against non-MAGA candidates.
  7. Even if that theory were correct, it’s still a big “so what?” Outside influences affect so many of our life decisions. These guys are basically saying: “Sexual orientation is a choice, and we demand you choose the one option we force upon you.” And that is the view of the same fucking idiots who incessantly spout off about freedom and free speech and all this other shit they don’t understand and don’t really care about. Because the primary reason someone becomes a fascist sheep is because they’re angry and really, really fucking dumb.

    Kath was a badass.
  9. Excellent point. The purpose of my post was to precisely rank the severity of various defeats suffered by German armored cavalry units throughout history and, as you note, my analysis was lacking in the intended thoroughness.
  10. This is the worst German tank disaster since El Alamein.
  11. What I love is the idea that Mars is some kind of solution to sustain human life. It has barely any water, a practically nonexistent atmosphere, and no life. And because Mars has no significant global magnetic field, any attempt to create an atmosphere or water basin would be futile: the solar wind would blast it all away. So even if we could get a sufficiently numerous group of colonists safely to Mars, they’d be limited to living in small, artificial environments for eternity (like biodomes). Might as well just save yourself the hassle and build those biodomes here on Earth. Mars is at best an initial stepping stone to a much, much longer journey to a habitable exoplanet.
  12. My heavens! This is history’s first documented example of libertarian hypocrisy. Those guys are usually so principled and consistent!
  13. A lot less than what’s wrong with Texas, apparently.
  14. He’s not acting. Kanye’s too stupid for that. He’s just always been a self-absorbed, arrogant yet shockingly dumb asshole. See the Taylor Swift incident for early indications of what this guy is.
  15. I guess it makes some kind of right wing idiot sense to protest a drag show by shooting at transformers.
