  1. A number of years ago, I booked a fly fishing trip at the Blue Damsel Lodge in Montana. Lovely venue, great fishing, wonderful food. My boat mate for the week was an enormous man named "Dutch" who was a delightful fishing companion. As the week passed, I learned that he had played linebacker at Ohio State and had tackled O.J. Simpson for a nine yard loss in the Rose Bowl. He had been a cowboy, was a US Marine Viet Nam war vet, and could cast a beautiful, delicate loop. For no apparent reason, his cell phone rang in the middle of the BitterRoot River one afternoon, and he had a pleasant discussion with the dude on the other end. Dutch was full of reassurance, and encouragement, and downplayed whatever the situation was. After he hung up, he answered my unasked question by saying "That was Jim Tressel. He's all worried because a couple of his players traded autographs for tattoos. I told him to self report, and that it was surely no big deal." I asked him what he did for a living, and he allowed that he was the Executive Director of the NCAA Division I Athletic Directors Association. I haven't spoken to him for a few years, but I still consider him a friend. And, I still consider myself a little bit of an OSU fan because of that week in a drift boat with a truly interesting man. For years, I have pondered how one Jim Tressel would look in a burnt orange sweater vest.
  2. 87 yard punt is the highlight of the game so far. Might be a little wind in Lubbock.
  3. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/27/us/missing-hiker-geraldine-largay-appalachian-trail-maine.html Here's a rehash of the older lady who got lost on the Appalachian Trail a few years ago. She ultimately died, and it was some time before here remains were discovered. She was less than two miles off the trail. To be sure, this was a much more remote area and much harsher conditions. The article states that she was "in over her head", but she had already covered a thousand miles or so. Take home point-finding your way in the woods isn't for everybody. I could get lost in a phone booth.

  6. And the beat goes on.... https://myparistexas.com/bonham-isd-taking-action-following-covid-19-concerns/ On Thursday, Bonham Independent School District announced its decision to cancel its next two varsity high school football games tonight and Friday, Oct. 23. The Purple Warriors were scheduled to play at home against Mt. Vernon, then at Pottsboro at 7:30 p.m. each night. In addition to this, Bonham ISD announced the final three regular-season JV and varsity volleyball games are canceled. The Lady Warriors were slated to face Bells at home tonight. Bonham was set to play at Blue Ridge and at Pottsboroon Tuesday and Friday, Oct. 23, respectively. The worst the Lady Warriors can finish is a tie for fourth with Bells, which will play at Leonard (Tuesday) and at home against Whitewright (Friday, Oct. 23). The Bonham football team must forfeit each district contest against Mt. Vernon and Pottsboro, which equates to two district losses. With the presence of confirmed positive cases at the high school campus, Bonham ISD took swift action. “We had to self isolate a large number of kids in the football program due to close contact with a person that received a confirmed positive test,” Bonham High School athletic director Ryan Prock said. “They will also be isolated for 10 days and will receive four days of remote instruction. We have closely followed the requirements of the Texas Education Agency (TEA).” Despite missing several games, Bonham High School staff members are taking advantage of its school calendar to get through the athletic difficulties quickly. More importantly, Bonham ISD is confident it will keep every student and staff member safe with the protocols in place. “We just put out a statement district-wide saying that all the students at BHS are going to transition to remote learning starting next week,” Prock said. “Every student at the high school will be going to remote learning next week. We will return back to the campus for in-person learning starting Tuesday, Oct. 27. The 23rd and 26th (of October) were already student holidays, so the kids will only be missing four days of school.” Prock said the varsity football team is still on track to play its last two football games of the regular season. The Purple Warriors will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 at home against Howe for Senior Night. Bonham’s season finale is scheduled to follow at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6 at Emory Rains. 10. Turns out it’s way down below the ocean. Down below the sea. https://archaeology-world.com/pyramids-discovered-under-water-off-coast-of-cuba-might-be-atlantis/ Cuba The remains of what may be a 6000-year-old city immersed in deep waters off the west coast of Cuba was discovered by a team of Offshore engineer Paulina Zelitsky and her husband, Paul Weinzweig and her son Ernesto Tapanes used sophisticated sonar and video videotape devices to find “some kind of megaliths you ‘d find on Stonehenge or Easter Island,” Weinzweig said in an interview. “Some structures within the complex may be as long as 400 meters wide and as high as 40 meters,” he said. “Some are sitting on top of each other. They show very distinct shapes and symmetrical designs of a non-natural kind. We’ve shown them to scientists in Cuba, the U.S., and elsewhere, and nobody has suggested they are natural.” Map showing the location of the supposed ancient city discovered by Paul Weinzweig and Pauline Zalitzki. Moreover, an anthropologist affiliated with the Cuban Academy of Sciences has said that still photos were taken from the videotape clearly show “symbols and inscriptions,” Mr. Weinzweig said. It is not yet known in what language the inscriptions are written. The sonar images, he added, bear a remarkable resemblance to the pyramidal design of Mayan and Aztec temples in Mexico. Mr. Weinzweig said it is too early to draw firm conclusions from the evidence collected so far. The research team plans another foray to the site — off the Guanahacabibes Peninsula on Cuba’s western tip. It hopes to return again, this time with the first deep-water mobile excavator, equipped with functions needed for on-site archeological evaluation, including the ability to blow the sand off the stone.

  17. Texas State not looking too bad at ULM. Up 24-7 late in second quarter. They seem more competent than in recent years.
