  1. Current long-range forecasts for Houston area have the next 9-10 days being absolute scorching hell, but they're hitting the hopium hard for the 3rd week of August.
  2. I've noticed a conspicuous change in what construction workers wear the last 2 summers. Never really paid much attention, but feel like most of my life, you'd see guys out on job sites just wearing regular shirts and hard hats. Now they make sure to cover up every inch of exposed skin. Long sleeve quick-dry UPF fishing shirts. Neck gaiters up over their mouth and nose, and they have those shrouds attached to their hard hats that cover from the brim to their shoulders.
  3. Mosquitoes need standing water to lay eggs in. On the unlikely chance a puddle were to actually form somewhere these last few weeks, the eggs would probably be hard-boiled.
  4. Waited too long to edit. Wanted to add: Just a little over 2 hours to get to town from my house in Houston and then maybe another 15-20 heading down backroads to the lease, so it's really convenient for me. Close enough where I could take off on Friday at lunch time, get there in time for an evening hunt Friday, another one in the morning and then be back by lunchtime Saturday if I want. Don't need to block off an entire weekend with 8+ hours of driving roundtrip to consider a trip. I'd love to get on a classic hill country lease out near Leakey or Junction or Llano or something, but those are all 5+ hour trips and a lot more $$. Maybe later in life. This'll do for now.
  5. Guess I should have said ESETX. Just south of Rayburn. Closest "town" is Colmesneil.
  6. I'm all in. After a disappointing '22 where none of my hunting plans actually came to fruition, I'm champing at the bit for '23. 1. As I posted in last year's thread a few days ago, just joined a lease in East Texas with my brother and some of his buddies. Lotta work to do to whip that place in to shape, but I'm actually looking forward to having an outdoors project on my hands. I've gotten way too city-fied over the past decade. Also, first time I've ever actually been on a lease as a paying member rather than having to wait to get invited. Gonna spend a couple Saturdays out there this offseason filling feeders and clearing out routes to the handful of serviceable stands, drinking beer, and plinking targets. 2. Have a weekend of 4 dove hunts booked for South Zone opener after missing last season entirely. 3. Standing invite to head to a buddy's hunting club down on the coast for a duck hunt this Fall. Just gotta figure out a weekend that works for both of us.
  7. It's something like 670 acres total if I recall from looking at the map in the camphouse. Main section with camphouse is like ~400 acres and then there's a 2nd part down the road that is pretty much undeveloped. Typical ETX timber company land. Sandy soil, shitloads of pine trees, pretty hilly. There are some dirt roads that the company uses to get around, but if you venture very far off the main roads, you're absolutely fucked if you don't have 4WD. Definitely some areas that would only be accessible with a 4 wheeler.
  8. Not that this is some grand discovery, but just got back from lunch and it hit me how much the almost complete absence of clouds has contributed to the suckage these past few weeks. Actually a little bit of cloud cover today, so decided to pop over to a favorite lunch spot that's maybe a 6-7 minute walk from my office for the first time in weeks. First few minutes of the walk were not bad at all. Very warm, but not particularly unpleasant. As soon as the sun popped out from behind the clouds, it felt like someone had aimed a space heater on full blast directly at my head. Instant transition from "Hey, this ain't so bad" to "curses upon this wretched town."
  9. Productivity accelerating, labor costs slowing.
  10. Got the invite to join this lease yesterday and jumped at the opportunity. It's dirt cheap for having year-round access to a place not too far away with a decent little camp house, fire pit area and grills. Brother and I are hoping to get some momentum started towards taking it a little more seriously as a hunting lease and not just a place for the other guys to get out of the city and fuck around one or two weekends a year. Almost no actual hunting was done last year. Don't think anyone went out there after first 2 weekends of deer season, and last I heard, no one has stopped by at all in months. The guy that's now heading things up now seems like a pretty serious hunter, so we're hoping that at least between the 3 of us, a few years from now we can hopefully call this "that first year where we actually put in some effort." Want to get out there soon for my first trip as an actual member and see how much work we've got on our hands, but fuck it's hot right now. Gonna have to give it a few weeks until this heat dome breaks down some. My nightmare would be getting out there when it's still 101 and finding out the AC unit has crapped out or the fridge burnt up and there's rotten slime seeping out.
  11. This is the most unpleasant 10-day forecast I've ever seen in Houston.
  12. BofA throws in the towel.
  13. On PXD's earnings call this morning, they laid down $80-100 as their expected WTI price for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024.
  14. Not that I wouldn't like to see a lefty bat added, but: We haven't had Yordan and Altuve in a lineup together for like 70% of our games. Dusty refuses to routinely use our far superior hitting catcher.
  15. First 2 episodes of the final season premiere tomorrow.
  16. "Switch 2" reportedly releasing Fall 2024. Will be handheld and continue to have a slot for physical game chips. Didn't realize that Switch has been on the market for over 6 years now. Will have been close to 7 1/2 years by the time this new console releases.
  17. GDPNow gets revised about once a week or so, tends to bounce up and down from week to week, and often overshoots the official GDP reading. That said, it was dead on for Q2.
  18. Really starting to break out. Up $7 over the past 2 weeks and almost $14 since hitting $68 this time a month ago. Meanwhile, the rig count continues going nowhere. Actually down about 100 rigs from this time last summer. A lot has to do with natty crashing back to earth and WTI being stuck in the mud around ~$75 for a good chunk of 2023 so far. I also think there's a significant amount of companies that were/are looking to get bought out and are refraining from doing anything other than the bare minimum needed to keep leases alive and cash flowing.
  19. Nerd alert: The original Castlevania series on NFLX was great. First time I ever watched something that could be considered "anime" but I got over that real quick. Top notch voice acting, gorgeous animation, brutal violence.
  20. Paul Reubens dead at 70 after privately battling cancer the last 6 years. RIP Pee Wee.
  21. 104 today, 103 tomorrow for Houston, before returning back to "only" 100 every day through next Tuesday.
  22. Once in a blue moon, I stumble upon a Far Side that I hadn't previously seen before. This one had me chuckling pretty good this morning. The details in the inkblot cards are what really make it land.
  23. OH, good catch, I obviously didn't read in in that way, but makes sense. However, doesn't seem to jibe with the following sentence where he talks about taking it up the chain to the head security guy for the Trump Org, not the head IT guy.
