  1. Ha! Somewhere during eighth grade my son took an interest to girls, which has increased his frequency of showering, teeth brushing, and deodorant application.
  2. Same here. Early on I never really worried about my daughter's "third space." Since elementary school she was active in sports year round, and then got into guitar. So when high school rolled around, she had a third and fourth space -- the basketball team and the classical guitar program. I was a little worried about my son. He was never into sports except for basketball, and he had nowhere near his sister's athletic ability. So I had some concern over whether he would find his "thing," and I didn't consider sitting in his room gaming all the time as a "thing." Unlike his sister who was playing guitar since second grade, he had expressed no interest in musical instruments, until he got to middle school, and then without any suggestion from me or his mom, told us he wanted to join the band and play flute. By eighth grade he was first chair in the flute section and marching with McCallum High. And he loves his band community, which has been so good for his social development.
  3. I'll probably volunteer one year for the McCallum pit crew. It does look like a lot of work, but I helped out with my daughter's basketball team at McCallum, and I think it was good for her to see her dad be part of the parent support group.
  4. A lawyer friend in town told me that his wife has helped Lake Travis high school students with the college admissions process over the years, and said that in her experience band kids had some of the highest college acceptance rates. I think a lot of admissions staff know that band kids work their asses off, and that level of discipline looks good on a resume. My son is a freshman in the McCallum High band, and last year was lucky enough to get "called up" to be a part of the McCallum band as an eighth-grader for the football season. That included early morning band practices at McCallum starting at 6:50 a.m. before husting to Lamar, Friday night football games, and a lot of Saturday UIL competitions that lasted most of the day. He absolutely loved it, and as his father I was damn impressed to see him work so hard. He thinks he might want to join a college marching band at a big school, maybe Texas, maybe somewhere out of state like Oregon where his sister is. But I do wonder if by the time he goes to college, after five years of intensive marching band, he'll get burned out by it. It's a grind.
  5. I don't think so. At least not for Oregon. My daughter visited the school just once, and didn't do any sort of official campus tour and didn't meet with anyone at the school.
  6. You’re welcome for my attention to this matter.
  7. To be fair, after the NC State game Mack really shored up his special teams for the rest of his tenure and then became OU’s bitch.
  8. I’ve said it before, but Colorado doesn’t give shit for merit aid unless your kid finds a cure for cancer. Oregon threw some generous money at my daughter which made nonresident tuition much more bearable. And she thrived her first year in Eugene. I don’t mind one bit of Kid No. 2 wants to go there. And he’s also in marching band and might want to continue in college.
  9. Pedochet. That’s outstanding.
  10. I’m probably in the minority, but I thought Man of Steel was better than this one. Not by a wide margin, and I recognize that they are two completely different interpretations. But I really liked Man of Steel. The OG Superman with Reeves, Hackman, and the John Williams score will always be magical to me.
  11. Maybe he meant to say “Cooper’s,” as in BBQ.
  12. I read Jamail’s autobiography several years ago, and as he started telling the story about that case, I thought, “WTF, this is a bullshit claim.” I forget the particular facts that he emphasized to show the city should be liable, but I remember at the end of the story saying, “Holy shit, he’s right, the city was negligent!” It was more impressive than Texaco v. Pennzoil.
  13. Georgia is indeed special.
  14. This is so fucking wonderful.
  15. I don't think this job is stressful for Trump at all, at least not mentally and emotionally. He doesn't give shit about fuck, unlike other presidents who have genuine worry 24/7 about the economy, national security issues, etc. It's certainly physically stressful for Trump. I think he still enjoys all the travel and public appearances and he doesn't seem to be slowing that down, but his body can't keep up like it used to.

  17. Cankles-in-Chief.
  18. I wonder how much George Soros paid Nick to post that.
  19. Okay, let's get serious. That situation might be what prevents a third term.
  20. A one-hit wonder from my high school days, incorporating Spandau Ballet.
