  1. Ottoman Empire was a safe haven for Jews for centuries. Sure it was more than 100 years ago, but that's like last week in those parts.
  2. In the one-step-forward-two-steps-back department, online Gaelic speakers inform me that I Peggy Hill-ed a Gaelic caption I wrote on a cartoon.
  3. 09 SEP 23-- first verified personal use of Scottish Gaelic with a True Scotsman. A Glaswegian rolled up on me at my art booth talking excitedly about "The flag! The flag!" Took me a sec to realize he was talking about a bright red and yellow medieval Scottish design I use as a tablecloth to counteract post-modernity's slide into gloom. Before he left I wished him welcome with a "Fàilte," odds are he doesn't speak Gaelic but most Irish don't either, and they all seem to understand the identical Irish word. Hey, it's not much, but Sputnik was just a beeping metal kickball, and now we can get porn off thousands or satellites.
  4. I was going to make a snarky comment about appearances, then realized I was sitting near a mirror.
  5. Normally, I'd agree. But on game weekend in Tuscaloosa, there's always somebody else just a little bit drunker. I think our boys slip through in the chaos.
  6. That metal table. Like they're gonna vivisect an alien or something.
  7. I would be happy I woke up. Then I'd lie there quietly feigning sleep until she left the cave to forage, and then see what materials I could find that would be useful for constructing a pit trap.
  8. That's like stomping your foot in a bag of shit. It's still a bag of shit, and now your foot has shit on it too.
  9. I thought I would share this informative bit of educational art with all of you. You may be surprised to know that an older acquaintance posted it on Facebook.
  10. I taught a night class at the Juco in Pell City about 10 years ago. It has the basics (I said BASICS) of civilization, but it's no Leeds. I guess if I'd known about the paint plant I would have been more excited.
  11. Hey, for anybody staying near Homewood/BHam who wants to get a distended gut eating at a real Mexico Mexican (not Taco Bell) buffet, or maybe get some fresh bread, pastries, or a licuado, saunter into Mi Pueblo supermarket in Homewood (pronounced Jongüu.) Don't yell too loud because everybody else there has a hangover and/or is about to go work on top of a hot roof. http://mipueblosupermarket.com/ Gordos a few blocks away also has good stuff if you don't want to eat until you can't walk, but their bread is way higher. https://menupages.com/gordos/433-valley-ave-birmingham
  12. Mauricio left and went home to Acambay where he has married and had a kid. Runs his own clothing store there which he always wanted to do. They have two decent cooks who switch off there. I have a limited knowledge of the menu because I go there at lunch whenever I crave patty melt and onion rings.
  13. It's just a feeling but maybe stay alert in Mizzibbi too.
  14. Pell City, Alabama is a speed trap. Beware. As for food, I'll let connoisseurs chime in.
  15. I'm a Salem's Diner man myself. Tell Mr. Wayne "The Professor" sent you. https://www.salemsdiner.com/ PS: Shipley's Donuts in Hoover does decent Kolaches
  16. It's a sedd day fer Merica nat cuz o th guilty verdicts but becuz Ay-ee can't hev an annist...
  17. Couldn't we save a lot of time if we contacted whichever cartel is supposed to have supplied some money, and ask them what they'd like to see happen?
  18. You could enjoy years of geekery on this site: https://lrc.la.utexas.edu/eieol
  19. I expect the usual crying hippies to show up, protesting against freedom and capitalism.
  20. It's embarrassing at the time. But DAMN it feels good once it's out.
