  1. They might be depleting / devaluing / whatever, but so is everyone else. Fuck 'em. We stick with the devil-we-know. We were Starwood people as well. We hated being absorbed into the Marriott Bonvoy bullshitedness. We carried that Starwood card a long time before that Bonvoy "Brilliant" (or whatever the fuck they call it) card showed up. We still primarily stay at Sheratons and Westins, but it truly is nice to have some of the Marriott options, depending on location. Our Brilliant Luxury Amex (or whatever the fuck they call it) has worked for us. We use it only for travel, and we're currently sitting on 998,000 points. We won't make Ambassador this year, due to our Spending, but...Titanium suits us just fine. With or without the card, we are well on our way to Lifetime Platinum, whether we have a card or not. We figure that will suit us well once we hit retirement.
  2. I had a cold last week as well. Pounded Nyquil and water, went through 3 boxes of tissue, and racked out for the better part of 48 hours. Weird, but I guess germs are everywhere, percolating in this heat just waiting for your grubby little hands to come along.
  3. Why can't I have both?
  4. God bless all you lovable Surly assholes. I truly appreciate the great responses and a few very helpful DMs received. Gave me lots of stuff to research and consider. Lotsa talk about sending me to the 'burbs. Not quite what I'm wanting, but I am also not taking anyone's recommendations lightly. Still focusing on Downtown for now. Our #1 pick is The Statler. Kinda hard to top for the amenities, overall. But, thanks to you guys, I also have a much longer list of (seemingly) good options that I did not have before. Will be in Uptown for a long weekend next month. Gonna wander around on foot, use some public transportation, check out a few other options in Uptown and Downtown, and also check out some of the surrounding neighborhoods you guys have recommended. Maybe swill some hooch and hear some Jazz while there. I fully expect it to be douchey, but wanna see it for myself. Grateful for the brain-trust here...just sayin...
  5. Did two weeks based out of Calistoga in April. Was pleasantly surprised to see it everywhere I went. Tried to drink as much as I could. The death of the Christmas Ale hurts my soul, though. Love that beer. Hell, I'm still pissed that Shiner doesn't make it's original Winter Ale anymore.
  6. I will check out those neighborhoods. Thanks! If you don’t mind elaborating, what makes Bishop Arts “adventurous”?
  7. Low class hookers AND decent blow, Gracie? Well, shit…take my money! Sounds great! Care to elaborate on those areas being “wack as shit”?
  8. Ideally, at least 1500’. Hopefully under $5k/mo all-in. All depends on floor plans and amenities. Just the two of us, but want a 2/2. One bedroom and one spare room for an office. Not gonna bother with a guest room when downtown hotels abound. Two bathrooms is always nice. Definitely want an above-average kitchen.
  9. Been living in Lufkin the past 4 years (wife's job). We're not gonna be tied to East Texas anymore, so it's time to move on. Phasing into semi-retirement, looking for something nice to downsize to in a fairly well-amentied urban environment. A simpler life that we can lock up, leave behind, and travel more easily when needed or desired. Less household maintenance responsibilities. Being closer to DFW is more desirable, (we're only 80 miles from IAH right now but 200 from DFW), access to the Symphony, music clubs, shithole Metal bars, fun local joints from food trucks to fine dining, less driving, more walking, maybe cut down to one car. Umm....that's all i got for now.
  10. I've been a Metalhead since the age of 6. Never gave a fuck if it was trendy or not. Just prefer it. Wore my hair long until the until the age of 47 (no, I wasn't going bald). Finally just got tired of taking care of it. I'm not a goth or anything, but most of my wardrobe is black. Wear concert shirts and either black pants or black shorts every day, with mostly black dress attire for nicer occasions. Just prefer it. I have regular stuff for summer vacations or patio parties, but that's about it. I got my first tattoo at 46. Takes up my entire left hand. Got it because I wanted it. Definitely can't hide it. Got another that takes up most my left forearm, and that's it. I'm currently 52. Don't really care what people think of my life, my hobbies, my outlook. I feel like I'm a very consistent person. I have good friends and a good life. Don't plan on changing anything anytime soon.
  11. Necrobump on this thread. Anyone here live in Downtown or Uptown Dallas? Considering a move and definite change of lifestyle.
  12. How far from HEB is YOUR apartment?
  13. Kinda bummed to hear about Scuttlebutt's. I hope they bounce back strong, but it won't be near as funky as it was. I met my wife there on a quiet Sunday. We were the only two people there at that time. Proposed to her 30 months later, sitting on the same two barstools, with music, football, and a packed house. They rolled out the red carpet for us, and we were on the website for a while. Sometimes, I miss home, but I really don't have a reason to go back there anymore. Probably should, though. But I'll wait for Scuttlebutt's to reopen...ha!
  14. You serve on school boards? And work in banking? That’s some scary shit to process…
  15. “Dallas area” covers a lot of ground. We are in downtown a lot. Stay at The Westin. Their corner suites are really freakin’ nice. Also, the Statler building is great with a ton of amenities. It’s a Hyatt. Also has residences there. We are considering moving in there within the next 2 years.
  16. Terrible? Yes. Graphic? No.
  17. So can I! Profit, baby…profit.
  18. Be honest. It’s for your dick, isn’t it?
  19. We looked it into it. My wife was looking into doing remote clinical work. Medicare requires you to be physically located in the US to bill. We’re hoping things might change before she implements her semi-retirement plans.
  20. I just got back from 5 days on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Bands, floozies, drinking, eating, walking, making new rocker friends, and discovering how things really work around there. Would gladly go back. Coming back to Lufkin was...sad. Shit.
