  1. I really really want Ukraine to make Russia pay for destroying the dam, by establishing a bridgehead over the Dnipro at one or more points and crossing the dry lake bed. According to the fortification maps, Russia really has no defenses all the way along the shore of what used to be the lake. If enough Ukrainian forces could do it, they could flank/get behind the de facto end of Russian lines at Vasylivka, have no mines to deal with, and get the Russians in crossfire. That should start collapsing the lines nicely. AND, Ukraine would be able to engage at the ZPP if they believe they can secure it (Ukraine has a tough choice of whether to just let Russia abandon the plant when the counteroffensive approaches, which would risk Russia trying to blow it on its way out the door, OR try to take it by force to prevent russian fuckery.
  2. This guy has been clowned before for some of his takes on the war, but he thinks the destruction of that big ammo dump in Rykove will mean Russia will be severely rationing artillery shells in the south for the next several weeks, which should open the door for Ukraine to advance. Says that Russian lines won't do much to stop Ukraine without artillery support.
  3. Reportedly its from special forces who got behind russian lines, so those guys probably thought they were fellow russian soldiers firing at Ukrainians
  4. True. When this is all over, the tale of the tape will be professional Russian soldiers KIA or seriously wounded (plus of course equipment/armor/weaponry taken out). I disagree with your earlier post about Ukraine reassessing after meeting fierce resistance. It appears none of Ukraine's new strike groups have entered combat yet. The front line skirmishes are purportedly to bring Russian artillery within range of counterbattery fire. Yet Ukraine is still gaining ground on several axes. I think they are purposely slowplaying the start of the counteroffensive to destroy as much Russian artillery & ammo, plus air and air defense assets. They have been hitting a lot of artillery if you look at the daily totals, and have taken out four helicopters in the last few days. Looks like its going according to plan to me.
  5. This won't load. Did Russia surrender?
  6. Hoooly shit you're a dumbass
  7. Ukraine has not reached the main defensive lines yet, the videos are showing foxholes on the front line. Read the long tweet you quoted.
  8. Its a reptile house
  9. I'm assuming Ukrainian intelligence is paying/bribing and instructing Russians on how to light up all this shit all over Russia? Seems like something new is burning everyday.
  10. I get that, but thought that Ukraine would gain such advantage in drones (both recon and armed) and counter drone technology to make up for the lack of those things you mention. Drones are relatively cheap, easier to train on, with little to no logistical tail, so they should be easy to supply in great numbers by the west. Given Russia's inability to make its own chips, plus sanctions, it seemed Ukraine's advantage would grow over time. I don't think we have great clarity at this point on the overall picture.
  11. After this is over, it will be fascinating to get macro level clarity on the drone/counterdrone piece of this conflict. I believed that over the course of the war, Ukraine would dominate both in numbers and quality of drones and also anti drone warfare. I assumed that western technology being supplied, bought, donated etc. would vastly overwhelm russian capabilities and ability to procure/manufacture more. I think Ukraine does have an advantage, but there have been a lot of lancet videos destroying ukrainian equipment, plus reports like this one, so it doesn't seem like an overwhelming advantage right now.
  12. Yesterday I watched a nerodia grab a pretty big bullfrog right on the edge of the pond. He snuck up slowly underwater without making a ripple, and then grabbed that frog from behind so fast it couldn't even thrash. The only sound was the frog saying "aaaaawwwwwwwwww." The frog tried to kick its big ol legs but snek had him held up where the legs couldn't touch anything. Snek then spent maybe a minute getting the frog mostly in its mouth, then scurried up the bank with head still high, to finish swallowing him in the brush. Pretty wild. I've now heard several frogs get grabbed by snek and the sound they make is pretty sad/pathetic. Almost like they're saying "Thaat huuurts! He finally got me and it suuuucks"
  13. South Florida doesn't really have anything that we normally think of as "rural" because the interior is all everglades and unpopulated areas. It has a hodgepodge of coastal communities with varying income and demographic differences -- pockets of old farts, white trash, Cuban, etc.
  14. This is what gets me. As a former law dog, I understand that its normally a high bar to meet the standard for a forced judicial recusal. But what about when the DEFENDANT in the damn case PERSONALLY APPOINTED the judge??? That should be an automatic recusal -- but the precedent is not there yet I guess. Still, that should be the argument.
  15. Hopefully they find the right pressure points to collapse a lot of Russian lines and avoid crawling into every orc den
  16. Do we need some Traver up in here? I fish because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly; because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape; because in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience; because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one don't want to waste the trip; because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters; because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness; because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better out there; because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and, finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant and not nearly so much fun.
  17. If you accept that nobody is going to invade Russia, even if its military is wiped off the map in Ukraine -- short of that, the free world should be focusing on de-nuking Russia. Maintain sanctions and starve the entire country until complete denuclearization.
