  1. Maybe this is the wrong topic but I'm not sure it warrants a new one. I am mentoring a young man who I think has a bright future. In high school, he took all the mediocre classes, had a 2.9, and a 23 on the ACT. His shop teacher encouraged him to be a welder. Literally said "I'm going to help you get a welder job at ______ company. My wife saw a spark and told him to take an ACT prep course. He bumped his score up to 29, with just a little prep. Encouraged him to apply to colleges, he got into OK state and a few others. He ended up attending Texas A&M Texarkana because he can live with family there and they gave him money. Basically paying him to attend. He majored in Mech. E. and just finished his first semester. 3.8 gpa. He told me "I can do better, I played too many video games this fall." The whole time he was working part time at a local business basically as a gopher. This young man was a quiet but good high school athlete who, for whatever reason, never had a ton of ambition. Sort of just puttered through. Family are good people, all auto mechanics. No discipline issues. To make extra money this young man finds broken gas string trimmers/weed eaters, fixes them and sells them on social media. Can turn out 1 or 2 per weekend. So, I personally think that, with his grades and apparent drive, I need to help and encourage him transfer to the best possible school that will take him. If you're going to major in engineering, better school is ... better. But, I understand there is an argument for "if kid is succeeding, why would you mess with that." Yes, I understand a 3.8 at tamu-txk is not the same as splitting the atom, but I think it's a showing that he takes it seriously. These are the best grades he's ever made. Assuming he doesn't discover beer this spring, and makes another round of grades, I think I can get him into UTD, Tech, ousux or maybe aggy. I feel like Austin is a stretch but will likely apply. My basic questions are: 1. How big of an advantage would it be to graduate from UTD over TAMU-Texarkana? I assume that UTD's career services is going to put its grads into places like Texas Instruments and Toyota. I assume it's just better than a regional aggy school. 2. Of those schools, how do you rank the engineering/computer science departments (UTD, aggy, ousux, Tech, Okie lite). 3. How much weight do you put on "aint broke, don't fix it... a degree from a mediocre program is good enough... if he wants more go to grad school somewhere better." 4. He's thinking about changing to ee instead of mechanical engineering. I think ee or computer science would likely be better but, any thoughts? I'm not trying to tell him what to be but, he really doesn't know - likes to build things and fix things. 5. He's got 1 month until classes start again, and I am thinking about challenging him to something. I'm thinking "take a google class on how to program Python and, if you can show me some proficiency, I'll give you $250." I can be an asshole and this kid may be the only one that comes to my funeral. I want to help him as best I can. Please comment - any advice is appreciated.
  2. Do you even moneyball, bruh?
  3. Economically this makes sense for the poor college student. Scoop up 4 for $65 a whack and turn around - sell them to some successful longhorn fan for $475 a pop. $1,640 profit for 8 hours of time - that's over $200 / hour. Freshmen aggy students are outpacing the Brazos county bar association's average hourly rate. Alternate argument in favor, if you had the following three options for your free time, which would you choose: 1. Go to yell practice; 2. Stand in line waiting for a table at Lupe Tortilla, and then waddle back to your 80's era apartment; 3. Go glamping with a bunch of college girls in a well maintained city park with boring architecture. I'm in on 3, and doordash the Lupe to my tent.
  4. I have a question. Hypothetical, not about any specific team. If a player enters the portal in December, and skips the bowl game, and then his team goes on to win the whole damned thing, does the player get a championship ring? On the one hand, player may have played in some games, contributed in some way, but on the other hand - quit before the finish line, put self before team, wasn't part of the final push. I say "give em the ring."
  5. This may not be the proper forum for this but, i would like to objectively evaluate the strategy of Hunter Biden's press conference this morning. I think it's genius. 1. He's under indictment for 2 separate charges. Any lawyer with a pulse will tell him to take the 5th on anything even tangentially related to those cases. That means he's not going to testify. Even if you get him under oath, "on the advice of counsel I am exercising my rights under the 5th..." 2. If he's not going to testify, then the leak from the private deposition would be "he took the 5th." That would be the headline. 3. By doing this, he can say "i was available and willing to testify." So now he controls the headline a little. If you're Hunter's lawyer, or strategist, what would have been a better move? Testify? Skip altogether? I think this was well planned and executed.
  6. Good intel. Any “can’t miss” places like a brewery or pizza place?
  7. Can someone school me on Winter Park as a destination for a family trip. I don't need a bunch of nightlife but would like all the basics. Decent restaurants/bars/pubs, activities, go for a walk around. Been to Breckenridge, Park City and Steamboat. Been to all 3 multiple times. Is Winter Park up to pace with those 3? What are the cons? Too close to Denver? Crowded?
  8. I can share that, when watching my high school athlete on the tennis court, sometimes I watch and hear the adjacent band practice. Any kids that can listen to that clicking loud metronome sound and not quit, have greater fortitude than my kids. That thing is noise pollution.
  9. This seems like it belongs in this thread: Man Fatally Shot Transgender Women in the Head Moments After Sex Act, Police Say (yahoo.com) Bible reportedly told investigators he was walking yesterday morning past a bus shelter where Williams was seated when she propositioned him for a sex act. He agreed and the two moved to the courtyard where Williams performed oral sex on Bible. During the act, though, Bible reportedly told police he became “suspicious” of Williams, and that he shot her in the head from a few inches away immediately after the act had been completed.
  10. One of your squad waved at the camera. Clearly that guy wasn’t focused on winning and was just dicking off. I would like an open tryout to compete for his spot. I’ll leave that fucker in my dust like an fsu team on its third string quarterback. Oh, and if there had been a red ball out there odds are high you would have taken it for a tow at 10kts.
  11. Why were you so late to the start? Maybe let someone from quantum drive next time. In all seriousness, how do you practice the downwind start? I've practiced upwind starts every way known to man. The only downwind starts I've ever been on were clusterfucks for all involved.
  12. Only if we get Jimbo Jr. with all the bling, and someone to bring the pimpstick they danced with in the UCLA game. If you're in, go all in.
  13. I think there is an argument to be made that, at least as to recruiting, FSU's whiny reaction will harm them. Option A - "injuries are part of football, if we had been 100% we would be in but we're not. I feel sorry for these kids who did their best. I will do everything in my power to get us in the CFP next year, we've proven we're close." Option B - "we got treated unfairly and it's not fair, the SEC/Big10 schools are treated better." If I'm a 'croot, I don't want to go to the school that's going to get cheated. i think I would change my narrative asap.
  14. I guess the question is, are we looking at something sustainable or a Jimbo flash in the pan. If we think Sark can continue to deliver (gonna be harder to win the conference going forward... bigger conference and arguably tougher conference), we do whatever it takes. If we think Sark is a good solid coach but most of our success comes from NIL, good batch of players, we're Texas, etc. (history shows that aint enough IMO), then be tight.
  15. I've got an idea, just spitballing here, tell me if this connects: "Coach, how about next time you're number 4 in the nation and cupcake week comes around, you don't pound your "Heisman candidate" (ESPN's words not mine) quarterback into the other team's linebackers?" Florida State's Jordan Travis has turned himself into a Heisman candidate after getting booed off the field - ESPN
  16. I can't count that high, but I can count to 7 Trey Benson - RB Lawrance Toafili - RB CJ Campbell, Jr. - RB Caziah Holmes - RB Samuel Singleton, Jr. - RB Rodney Hill - RB Demetric Stephens - RB 7 running backs on the FSU roster who would have willingly taken the handoff and run into harm's way, so the qb didn't have to. Coach Norvell, I would be pissed off also, pissed off at the man in the mirror.
  17. I have done some stupid things in my life, and then had to live with the consequences. It really sucked, each time. To the person who decided it was a good idea to run your quarterback out of the pocket and upfield, for some yards, IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE GAME, while ranked 4 in the nation, and playing North Alabama, I feel you. That decision was stupid and your consequence is your qb broke his leg. Footnote: your "playoff caliber team" was trailing North Alabama 13-squadooch, at home, at the time you made that decision.
  18. Me too. I also got an AT-AT, an x wing, and most of the motley crew from the bar hangout including the green guy with the weird mouth.
  19. As long as we’re looking for reasons, Does the committee give us bonus points for having to beat the big12 refs too? Seems like it should count for something.
  20. They’re pretty near the first down marker. Maybe 3 yards short. They don’t know that because they’re not looking at the sticks but they know they’re close. General awareness. they have to close the distance rapidly to stop the first down, so haul ass super fast and then, at the last second… qb can fight or quit and they have to respond accordingly. I think it’s bullshit. Qb has a concussion because qb ran out into a grown ass man’s game. He fucked around and found out. Oh, and refs then rewarded his team with 15 yards. We want to disincentivize these things but they have incentivized the qb to basically play chicken.
  21. This post ends like a cut line from No Country for Old Men. “You can’t stop what’s comin’. It ain’t waiting’ on you.” Fuck FSU.
  22. I thought that's what I said and I got compared to Miss Teen South Carolina.
  23. I personally believe that, if the qb passes the line of scrimmage becoming a runner and no longer a passer, he(she) should sack the fuck up and fight. "I'm going to run until I realize these big angry football players are on my ass and then I can just call quitsies..." is no way to run a sport like football. You get stuff like this - defender has to recognize a surrendering player and change his strategy, at full speed, in about .6 seconds. I understand what the rule is, and why, but I'm just saying that the bullshit surrender/targeting policies caused this concussion. QB can pass, can run, or whatever, but if he decides to run he gonna get tackled and likely by someone that makes tackles hurt.
  24. Your maidservants don’t live on premises?
