  1. Left game hurt... Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse wide receiver Johntay Cook was enjoying a stellar debut against No. 24 Tennessee before the muscles in one of his legs started to tighten up on him in the second half. Cook had five catches for 59 yards and a touchdown in the first half against the Volunteers, and he looked like one of the Orange’s most dangerous weapons on offense. Another article...

  3. Texas offensive line experiencing expected growing pains The verdict remains out on the running game for the Longhorns and the team’s rebuilt offensive line. by Wescunt Eberts Sep 9, 2025 AUSTIN, Texas — Kelvin Banks isn’t walking through the doors of the Texas Longhorns football facility. Neither is Cam Williams. Nor Hayden Conner. Nor Jake Majors. The core of the Longhorns offensive line that helped Texas win a Big 12 championship and make back-to-back appearances in the College Football Playoff semifinals is no longer on the Forty Acres, producing the first significant transition period for Kyle Flood’s line in the Steve Sarkisian era since Flood assembled a group that earned recognition as Joe Moore Award finalists in 2024. During the offseason, Sarkisian was clear that he expected growing pains replacing four starters with a combined 11 years of starting experience, citing continuity and consistency as keys for the Longhorns to improve throughout the season. He wasn’t wrong. “We ran it really good last week. We ran it okay today, so I don’t know. Verdict’s still out,” Sarkisian said of the running game after the win over San Jose State. Against Ohio State, Texas managed 166 rushing yards on 4.5 yards per carry, in stark contrast to the struggles last season against elite defenses. The effort against San Jose State wasn’t as heartening given the quality of opponent — 155 yards on 4.8 yards per carry. Through two games, the consistency is lacking because of breakdowns in technique and fundamentals. Against Ohio State, Texas had success against a defensive line that often took a more traditional approach with big, physical players engaging in one-on-one matchups. The Spartans, however, didn’t have the size or physicality to match up with the Longhorns in those situations, choosing instead to rely on their movement and quickness, which caused problems for Flood’s line. “We totally lost our fundamentals. We got on our toes. We were falling over ourselves. We give up way too much penetration,” Sarkisian said on Monday. Sarkisian blamed an inability to translate the scouting report to the game. “You’ve got to wipe the slate clean on a Monday morning. Here we go, here’s the scouting report, here’s what they’re good at, here’s maybe what they’re not so good at, here’s how we’re going to try to exploit them. Here’s the guy that I’m lining up across the majority of the game. Here’s his strengths, here’s his weaknesses. How am I going to play him? I didn’t think we carried enough information into the game and applied it up front,” Sarkisian said. So the necessary growth will have to come from the maturity to understand the need to adjust each week. With the significant decrease in experience across the line, some of that growth has to come from in-game adjustments. Sarkisian cited a zone running play early in the second quarter on which senior center Cole Hutson missed a blitzing linebacker who brought down redshirt freshman running back Christian Clark for a two-yard loss. Early in the third quarter, Hutson was ready for the weak-side linebacker coming downhill on the same play call and Clark was able to find a seam for a 13-yard gain. A weak link through two games has been at the left guard position, where redshirt sophomore Connor Stroh unexpectedly won the starting job over redshirt junior Neto Umeozulu. Given Stroh’s play over 89 snaps, that’s an indictment of the lack of development from Umeozulu, a top-100 prospect and the No. 4 interior offensive lineman in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings — a 6’7, 350-pounder with questionable feet, Stroh has graded out at 48.3 overall and 41.4 as a run blocker by Pro Football Focus, abysmal, failing grades. Although Stroh has reshaped his body to improve his conditioning, he consistently ends up on the ground because of his poor balance. Against Ohio State, defensive end Eddrick Houston only needed a handful of plays to take advantage of Stroh getting out over his toes, using a jerk and swim move to dump the big lineman on the turf. Once that lack of body control ends up on film, it becomes simple for opponents to exploit — San Jose State needed even less time than Ohio State did to send Stroh toppling over. As former Texas offensive lineman Donald Hawkins pointed out on Twitter, the balance issues for Stroh should be an easy fix — he just needs to bring his feet with him on contact, getting two feet on the ground instead of lunging off of one foot. After holding up well in pass protection against the Buckeyes, Stroh struggled against the Spartans, allowing a pressure by a stunting linebacker looping across the formation that caused an incompletion and then getting knocked over on a bull rush, plays that contributed to a 47.1 pass-blocking grade on Saturday. In 48 snaps, Umeozulu has been more consistent — he hasn’t allowed a pressure in pass protection and his run-blocking grade is 63.8, only slightly below average. The platoon looks similar to Hutson and DJ Campbell splitting time at right guard last season with Campbell playing roughly two thirds of the snaps. “I just felt like both those guys with the lack of experience that they’ve had, and you don’t have a lot of information on them yet, in live games with live bullets, so for now, we’ll stay with that platoon,” Sarkisian said. For mental and physical reasons, Sarkisian expects to continue playing Stroh and Umeozulu at left guard. “There’s a physical conditioning factor that you’ve got to get used to playing that amount of reps. And I think there’s a mental conditioning factor where you got to stay locked in, you know, for 20-30, 40-50, 60-70 reps. If we can help them grow into that — and they’re both capable to do it — then that’s probably the road we’ll go down until something changes that,” Sarkisian said. Other growing pains seem like a function of youth. At right tackle, sophomore Brandon Baker is known as a hard-working, technically-refined player, but he’s also committed three false starts in two games and allowed five quarterback pressures against Ohio State. On one notable play against San Jose State, redshirt sophomore running back CJ Baxter was dropped for a five-yard loss on a first-down screen pass because Baker was slow to release and couldn’t make the key block. The hope is that continuity throughout the season will improve the unit’s consistency, but right now the verdict remains out on this rebuilt offensive line, just like the verdict remains out on the Texas running game.
  4. Former SEC Quarterback Rips Arch Manning, Texas Longhorns Originally posted on Texas Longhorns on SI By Aaron Raley | Sep 11, 2025 The No. 7 Texas Longhorns and quarterback Arch Manning have had two groups of people associated with them, one group believing the team and quarterback are one of, if not the best in the nation. On the other side? The group that believes that the hype is just that, hype, and that others are getting way in over their heads about both aspects of the team. Arch may have gotten off to a slow start in the Longhorns' season opener against Ohio State, but he found his footing late in the game and in the following game against San Jose State. But that hasn't stopped the critics from getting their two cents in. "I'm Not Scared of Texas' Offense" In an interview with USA Today, former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray did not hold back in his true feelings of both the Longhorns and of Manning, calling the sophomore "average" and not believing in the Burnt Orange's national championship hopes. "I think Arch Manning is pretty average. Don’t tell his uncle that," Murray said. "Very average, to be honest. I am not scared of Texas. I am not scared of Texas’ offense. I don’t think when Arch plays Oklahoma and Georgia and whoever else on their schedule has a good defense, that the offense is going to have much success. I don’t really believe Texas is a big, big threat to winning a national championship.” Murray was the starting quarterback with the Georgia Bulldogs from 2009 to 2013, where he set the SEC record for passing yards and passing touchdowns, both of which are still held today. In the opener against the Buckeyes, Manning completed 17 of 30 attempted passes for 170 yards and found wide receiver Parker Livingstone on a spectacular 32-yard connection in the end zone while also throwing an interception during his slow start in the contest. Last Saturday against San Jose State, Manning saw a return to form that Longhorn fans got used to seeing during his couple of starts last year, completing 19 of 30 passes for 295 yards, an interception, and four passing touchdowns, while also running an additional score into the end zone. Manning may take a few more bumps and bruises as he adjusts to the starting role, but Murray's claim that Texas isn't a big threat to win the national title feels a little premature. After all, the old saying has rung true over the years, defense wins championships.

  7. Francesco Molinari outlines Europe’s plans to tame Ryder Cup crowd By Josh Lees Francesco Molinari will once again be involved in the European Ryder Cup setup as a vice-captain, and the team have already been putting in the work to prepare for the US crowd at Bethpage Black. Much has been said about the backing that will be behind Keegan Bradley’s American team in New York. The Europeans have been warned on numerous occasions over what reception they could receive when the action gets underway later this month. An away Ryder Cup is one of the toughest tasks in golf, and things are expected to be much harder for the visitors this time around. Amid all the noise in the build-up, the European team have been putting in the work behind closed doors to ensure they are able to deal with anything thrown their way. Eleven of the 12 European players are in action at the BMW PGA Championship this week, as is captain Luke Donald and his assistant Molinari. Speaking to bunkered.co.uk at Wentworth about the prospect of the New York crowd later, the Italian vice-captain told bunkered.co.uk: “We are very aware. “It has been one of the main points of the preparation.” During this prep, Molinari revealed Donald and Co have reached out to experts from other sports on how best to deal with hostile fandom. “[We’ve been] talking to people outside of golf to see how they manage the crowd in other sports,” the former Open champion added. “But it is an experienced team, we all know what is waiting for us and we need to show up and perform.” Molinari is no stranger to succeeding in an away Ryder Cup, having played his part in Europe’s ‘Miracle at Medinah’ 13 years ago. It is the only Ryder Cup that has gone the way of the away team in the last nine editions of the event, and Molinari is not the only member of the current cohort who played his part in the historic victory. Skipper Donald starred in Illinois as a player, while Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose also featured alongside the Englishman and Molinari. They were led by Jose Maria Olazabal in 2012, another one of Donald’s returning assistants this time around. Molinari believes this experience within the locker room will prove key in their bid to recreate history at Bethpage. “Luke was there, Justin was there, Rory was there,” he commented. A core group from Medinah, we have Olazabal as well who will bring his experience… “For sure that experience helps. It also good to have guys that have played in the US even without being successful, we will know what to expect.” Despite not having home advantage the Europeans have plenty in their arsenal in their bid to defend the crown they won so convincingly at Marco Simone. One key component of the team is Molinari’s brother Edoardo, who has prevailed as Donald’s secret weapon in recent years. Edoardo has balance the latter stages of his career with working intently in golf statistics and data, and the Europeans have used this to their advantage. There have been many special moments between the Molinaris throughout their careers, and working together in the Euro camp as part of Donald’s team has been another. “It is a pleasure and honour to do [the job] with the team, especially with my brother,” Francesco explained. “It is definitely special. We were lucky to play our first one together, who could have said when we were kids that we would be here right now.” Despite their brotherly bond, the Italians seemingly have different roles in the team. I think we are quite complimentary. I am not good with numbers,” he joked. “I try to bring something different.”
  8. ‘I don’t care’ – Keegan Bradley issues Ryder Cup message to European rivals By Josh Lees •35 minutes ago Keegan Bradley has no interest in getting embroiled in mind games with his European rivals ahead of the Ryder Cup later this month. Bradley will lead his fellow Americans into battle at Bethpage Black, with talk surrounding the event intensifying as it grows closer. Two weeks out, the majority of both teams are on the golf course this week, with 11 of the 12 Europeans in action at the BMW PGA Championship alongside their captain Luke Donald. The Americans meanwhile are playing on home soil at the Procore Championship, with ten of Bradley’s players competing out in California. Despite not being in the field, Bradley is present at Silverado Resort’s North Course to oversee the prep of those in action. On Wednesday the captain faced the media with the talking points of course centring around the Ryder Cup. During his press conference the US captain was quizzed on any potential back-and-forth ‘banter’ between the teams in the build-up. Admitting he has no plans of getting involved with the Europeans in the weeks leading up to the trip to New York, he replied: “I really don’t care what they’re doing, I really don’t care what team Europe does.” More than aware of the threat his rivals pose, Bradley described the current crop of Euro players as the ‘best European team ever’ paying the same compliment to captain Donald. This however was seemingly as much as he willing to speak about his opponents. Reiterating his ‘don’t care’ stance, Bradley continued: “I don’t care what Europe is doing, “I only care about our 12 guys, our caddies, the wives. I only care about what we’re doing… “So they should be confident but I’m not really — I really don’t care what they say about us, I only care about our team.”

  14. Both the American and European teams will be playing this week: Team USA in the Procore Championship and Team Europe in the BMW PGA Championship. However, both sides will have significant roster losses. Bryson DeChambeau will not be able to compete in Napa Valley, as he is banned by the PGA Tour due to his membership in LIV Golf. Xander Schauffele will also miss the Procore Championship due to a family matter, according to a report by Sports Illustrated. On the European side, only Sepp Straka will not tee off at the Wentworth Club, as he is taking care of his wife, who gave birth prematurely last month. This was the same reason he withdrew from the BMW Championship during the PGA Tour playoffs. The information was revealed by European captain Luke Donald, who added that he is not worried about Straka's form heading into the Ryder Cup.
  15. Dumb... Ryder Cup: Rory McIlroy Gives Take on Team US Shirt Scandal The Team USA squad heading into the Ryder Cup has sparked major controversy with its promotional T-shirts for the event. The uproar centers on a striking detail: the shirts feature the silhouette of a golfer who appears to be none other than Rory McIlroy, one of Team Europe's biggest stars and a longtime rival. As expected, the matter quickly reached the Northern Irishman, who reacted tactfully, albeit with a humorous note. "It looks more than Adam Scott to me than me," McIlroy told Sky Sports at the Wentworth Club, where he will play in the BMW PGA Championship starting Thursday. "It looks a little similar. I don't know," he added. Regarding the possibility of thousands of American fans at Bethpage Black wearing his image on their shirts, McIlroy stated that he has no problem with that. "That's OK. That's fine. I won't mind that," he said. Team USA has not commented on this controversy. However, some voices in the golf world have raised doubts about whether McIlroy is indeed the player silhouetted in the image. Well-known golf swing analyst Luke Kerr Dineen opined on his X account that it is Scott in the image, and included an analysis of the swing seen in it to support his opinion. PGA Tour player Michael Kim, meanwhile, said that he believes the silhouette in the image belongs to Chris Kirk, also a player on the American tour. Kim stated that he is certain that it is not McIlroy. However, no one has been able to explain how it is possible that the promotional image of the American team for the Ryder Cup does not include a member of their own team, much less a player from another country or from the opposing team. The Ryder Cup will be played from Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black on Long Island in New York. The event pits American and European teams against each other in a program that includes matches in foursomes, fourball, and singles formats. The event has been held since 1927 and is considered one of the world's premier tournaments. It is played every two years at alternating venues in Europe and the United States.
