  1. Welcome to the party, pal! I've been frustrated for years over the quality of """news""" sources that tend to get posted and propogated in the Daily Texan. Thank fuck pronghorn's contract ended and he's leaving us alone
  2. Thing is, he's not aggy. He's generationally wealthy Texas shithead that gets off on being a bully and then donating to orphanages to make up for it
  3. Really showing Christ's love, deacon.
  4. "8 in 10 republicans support rendition without due process" tell me more how the democrats just aren't messaging well enough
  5. what are you talking about?? They're gonna make the outdoors GREAT again!
  6. still cracks me up he held a COVID campaign rally on Juneteenth in 2020 in the midst of the BLM protests, and it led to the creation of the Herman Cain Award
  7. Even jones' bankruptcy trustee is calling bullshit on him, it's just too bad they gave him the benefit of the doubt only for the most predictable outcome to happen\ https://apnews.com/article/alex-jones-infowars-sandy-hook-shooting-8f4c64aa6ca78f30c5a7472e92865edd Just amazing work by the court system - letting a fascist do fascism pretty much unimpeded, and getting the bestiary of goons continue to get away with it and perpetually kick the can down the road. Justice delayed is justice denied.
  8. that would be right at home in the "The Democratic Party" thread too lmfao
  9. It's less about "fixing the internet" and more about enforcing baseline data collection and retention rules, like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe. It's a law with real teeth that lets governments and citizens go after data brokers and assert sovreignty over their own identity and data online. It's less about anonymity and more about not allowing any private entity to acquire and exploit the data of hundreds of millions of people for whatever means they want. And yes yes yes, it's never going to completely be gotten rid of - onion routing and the dark web give bad actors a ton of tools to avoid enforcement. But if it's explicity illegal and treated as the bad behavior that it is, it will significantly reduce its negative impact. That's far afield from THIS specific issue, but goddamn, the dude would not have been able to target and conduct his terroristic assasination plot - but for the easily accessed personal data marketplaces online.
  10. History and facts are not CR. If the deal that Iran was complying with (see surly thread covering that topic) was still in place, Israel would have non-violent means to secure their ultimate outcome of ensuring that Iran does not have nuclear weapons. Not making a value judgement on the decision - but they very simply would have an option besides bomb bomb bombing Iran to realize their national security objectives.
  11. You happen to be leaving out the bit where in 2018 Trump tore up the agreement that Obama made, and has been trying to unring that bell now. He set the table for this in the first place
  12. It would appear the shooter was able to simply buy personal information on his victims from public and legal markets, whoopsie poopsie! https://www.wired.com/story/minnesota-lawmaker-shootings-people-search-data-brokers/ It's an issue I've talked about repeatedly here on surly, and the usual suspects typically just come back with "bhhhhuuuuut it's OBAMACARE for the internet!!!" but goddamnit data privacy matters! It's absurd and literally leading to deaths now, the degree to which our personal information is financialized by private interests at the expense of our peace of mind, or even peace of body.
  13. It's really absurd the degree to which the entire American economic system relies exclusively on the chip fabs of Taiwan. If China were to just go shake that island a little bit, NVDA and the entire stock market would shit itself
  14. this will be the first major combat deployment for LCS ships - big time acid test for the hull brittleness and cracking issues
  15. the crazy thing is - spending an ever growing amount of money for even smaller returns doesn't matter. As long as you can show GROWTH all sins are washed away, white as snow
  16. ICE is now arresting people for asking to see a warrant. NYC City Comptroller was arrested by ICE for walking an immigrant home from court. Of course the secret police were wearing facemasks and covering their badge numbers. For all we know, this elected official was just disappeared by random street goons. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/17/brad-lander-arrested-new-york-city-comptroller Additional footage of the arrest shows Lander telling immigration officials: “I’m not obstructing. I’m standing right here in the hallway. I asked to see the judicial warrant. “You don‘t have the authority to arrest US citizens asking for a judicial warrant,” Lander can be heard saying. The officials, two of which were wearing masks, then pinned Lander to a wall and put him in handcuffs. It remains unclear why he was arrested.
  17. I mean, his Director of National Intelligence was propogating russian talking points in 2022 about Ukraine being an aggressor and building bioweapons labs, and traveled to Syria in 2017 to meet with Bashar al-Assad and accuse the US of funding terrorists in the middle east. But let he who's military industrial complex has not falsely claimed WMD's to justify an aggressive war of regime change throw the first shoe
  18. Even IF they could enrich that much uranium, the metallurgy to mold, cast, and machine nuclear metals would take a loooooong fucking time too. This is shit where even being off by a micron can cause a nuclear fizzle instead of a critical mass. I really doubt that they could go from mid-grade uranium to finished warheads in three weeks. That's just absurd without an existing pipeline that's been at cold-war era level of production I do think if he's not outright lying, he's leaving out key context that causes his statement to be extremely misleading at best
  19. At least old comedy sketches from the mid-2000's are coming back into relevancy again! Cracks me up that they've just been re-uploading sketches as they become relevant again
  20. You kidding? Maverick was able to shoot down a 5th gen with one they had just sitting up on the blocks!
  21. Probably deserves its own thread, but what a fuck you after the 250th birthday of the Army https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/16/va-doctors-refuse-treat-patients ‘Extremely disturbing and unethical’: new rules allow VA doctors to refuse to treat Democrats, unmarried veterans Doctors at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals nationwide could refuse to treat unmarried veterans and Democrats under new hospital guidelines imposed following an executive order by Donald Trump. The new rules, obtained by the Guardian, also apply to psychologists, dentists and a host of other occupations. They have already gone into effect in at least some VA medical centers. Medical staff are still required to treat veterans regardless of race, color, religion and sex, and all veterans remain entitled to treatment. But individual workers are now free to decline to care for patients based on personal characteristics not explicitly prohibited by federal law. Language requiring healthcare professionals to care for veterans regardless of their politics and marital status has been explicitly eliminated. Doctors and other medical staff can also be barred from working at VA hospitals based on their marital status, political party affiliation or union activity, documents reviewed by the Guardian show. The changes also affect chiropractors, certified nurse practitioners, optometrists, podiatrists, licensed clinical social workers and speech therapists. In making the changes, VA officials cite the president’s 30 January executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government”. The primary purpose of the executive order was to strip most government protections from transgender people. The VA has since ceased providing most gender-affirming care and forbidden a long list of words, including “gender affirming” and “transgender”, from clinical settings. Medical experts said the implications of rule changes uncovered by the Guardian could be far-reaching. They “seem to open the door to discrimination on the basis of anything that is not legally protected”, said Dr Kenneth Kizer, the VA’s top healthcare official during the Clinton administration. He said the changes open up the possibility that doctors could refuse to treat veterans based on their “reason for seeking care – including allegations of rape and sexual assault – current or past political party affiliation or political activity, and personal behavior such as alcohol or marijuana use”.
  22. They're definitely a problem and will give you cancer in Europe or America. Their waterways are contaminated from a history of warfare and industry, but they have rules in place to at least try to reduce further release and contamination and aren't doing a #yolo like we are
  23. This is such an embarrassment, gonna be in history books for how gaudy and blatantly full of bribery it is. Shit looks like a loading screen in a shitty video game lol
  24. Well when's the last time Boeing engineers were responsible for hundreds of civil aviation deaths????
  25. The first couple seasons of clone wars is a kids show, but there's some real juice there. I'll find a skip list and post it, because there's definitely some stuff better off without lol. But the series brings SO MUCH depth to Anakin's characterization and fall to the dark side during the literal years of war during the Clone Wars. And honestly, if you don't wanna watch it all you can skip to the last 4 episodes of season 7, which start right at the beginning of ROTS and runs in a parallel timeline THROUGH order 66. There's definitely some spoilers jumping that far ahead, but the animation and production quality would be right at home on the silver screen
