  1. I'm a big time convert. Separate cubes for shirts, boxers, socks, etc...just makes that part of traveling so much more convenient.
  2. Randomly watched Apollo 13 for the first time in years. Still a great film.
  3. I remember as a kid seeing Schindler's List and what kind of "decent" German citizen would let that kind of evil take root in their country. It's not as difficult to understand these days.
  4. I've never heard of or considered this. Color me intrigued.
  5. I don't disagree. But I'm dubious that Israel/Palestine is a particularly important issue to many people.
  6. People who go everywhere with their big headphones on. People being so disengaged from the world and the enshitification of the world probably has some connection. Similar to everyone glued to their phones (I'm a hypocrite).
  7. Think I'll check in on The Democratic Party thread, it's been a while.
  8. I'm a fan of the Hawaii time zone. Wake up and watch the morning games with my coffee. Later games with lunch. Have the afternoon for the beach.
  9. I went to a couple a few years back solo. I just walked in no reservation, no problem.
  10. My default rule is every email, text, and call is a scam and I never answer any of them (or open attachments) unless I'm certain I know who they are.
  11. I appreciate the detailed input. I got a quote a little while ago for $3,200 for a solo 7 night 60 mile highlights self-guided hike. Includes food, bag transport, and 4 hotels plus 3 refuges. Part of the cost is a single occupancy fee. Not cheap, particularly for a shorter itinerary, so I may look into the hiking club site. I'm aiming for August 2026, so hopefully rooms will be more available if I book it soon.
  12. That's amazing Bobcat. I've had it on my list to do for years and never follow through until it's too late in the season and there's nowhere to stay. Did you use one of the agencies that books the stays and transports your big pack to each stop?
  13. It's wild watching that podcast video. They seem like intelligent reasonable guys who work hard to run a business. Trump is all about chaos. Why did so many of these small business guys not consider how bad chaos might be for their businesses? From these lower level guys all the way up to Jamie Dimon types saying we need to get over worrying about tariffs. As a small business guy myself, it's mind blowing to me how enormous a blind spot all these guys have. FAFO indeed and we all get to pay for it.
  14. I'm glad, of course, it ended up being a non-event for Hawaii. It was my first time in six plus years living here facing a serious potential damaging event. It was good practice figuring out what to load into the car and where to go. A dress rehearsal of sorts for something more serious. I realized I didn't have a real plan in place for something like this which is dumb when living on an isolated island.
  15. Just got the 30 minute siren warning. I was parked alone up on this section of highway when I got here at 4:30. Now there's probably 50 cars parked up here.
  16. Where are you headed?
  17. A family in front of me. I'm a humble Honda man.
  18. Parked a couple hundred feet up high near the H3 on ramp with a nice view of Kaneohe Bay and a full SUV of supplies. Traffic is minimal and very orderly on this side of the island with police directing things. Tsunami sirens going off every so often.
  19. Fair point. I have two older neighbors I'm going to check in on to join me.
  20. I've got the SUV loaded with water and food and other essentials ready to go to higher ground if need be.
  21. I live 600 feet from Kailua beach on Oahu. Pucker level is 8/10.
  22. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6500596/2025/07/21/college-football-program-valuations-rankings-2025/ 1. Texas: $2.38 billion (projected price) Three-year average football revenue: $183 million The Longhorns routinely lead the country in revenue and were the only team to top $200 million in the most recent financial reports. No program came within $25 million of Texas in either of the past two years. The Longhorns haven’t won a national title since 2005 but made the College Football Playoff semifinals each of the past two seasons and are among this preseason’s top championship contenders. Add in the SEC brand, and Texas looks like the safest investment. Our price tag makes the Longhorns comparable to the 2018 sale of the Carolina Panthers (almost $2.3 billion). 15. Texas A&M: $973 million Average football revenue: $97.3 million The Aggies have the rabid fan base and demographic upside to be higher. Money has also never been an issue at a program that paid Jimbo Fisher the biggest buyout in college football history (about $77 million). But we’re also considering wins and losses because of the money victories bring. Texas A&M is arguably the nation’s biggest underachiever with only four top-five finishes and one national title (1939) since the Associated Press poll began in 1936 and zero conference titles since 1998.
  23. I may not be following your question, but if I am, one option is to purchase a 4x4 piece of plexiglass of a solid thickness, say 1/4 to 1/2 inch and do a simple wood frame with 1x2 wood strips that are nailed to the side jamb. You can cut the plexiglass to size with a fine tooth blade on a handsaw or maybe pay extra and order a custom cut piece from a local plastics business. This may be a lot more effort than you're thinking for a simple garage window filler. I had the same issue when I built a tiny house with sliding windows instead of single or double hung windows. I ended up purchasing a specialty vertical oriented window unit that came with a filler for the space above. Pain in the ass and lesson learned.
  24. Past Lives, a Korean and American film. It's slow and melancholic but also sweet. A nice break from the usual fast paced fare.
