  1. Not sure where to put this so I'll ask here. I recently moved to Salt Lake City and saw this morning in the news that there's a marathon going on Saturday. I regularly run about 7 miles a day in addition to light weights and walking my dog a few miles a day. So I'm in pretty good cardio shape. I'm intrigued by the route which is a long gradual descent down a mountain. I was thinking I might sign up for the 13.1 mile half marathon race to try something new. Being as it's this Saturday, I've done no training for it. But I wonder, considering how much I run, if that's really necessary or if I'm being naive. For as much as I run, I've never actually gone further than 8 miles. Dumb idea?
  2. I rarely get offended by anything. But I feel protective of those in society who are vulnerable. When I hear someone use cruel language that has historically been used to oppress and demean a vulnerable group, I'm not going to get in their face (assuming they're not actually using it towards someone in that group directly), but I sure as hell will think that person is a piece of shit and think much less of their character. I'm far from perfect and I think people can change and improve, so I try not to shame others or even judge them too harshly in my mind. But I think it's fair and healthy to be offended by certain language and behavior if its motive is to be cruel.
  3. No criticism taken. On the contrary, it's appreciated. I am very much an amateur builder and always trying to learn more. For the plumbing venting, I did an interior Oatey Sure Vent. I had heard the issue you mention about fresh air when spray foaming the envelope, but I don't really have an answer. I suppose I was counting on the occasional opening of the doors and windows. But that's a fair point. I'll have to think on how to address that to ensure good air quality. The TH's are only going to have a countertop double induction top and maybe a countertop multi-mode air fryer for simple meals. They're not intended for elaborate cooking, and frankly, my family doesn't do much of that anyways. So we'll probably just open the windows over the kitchenette if we're not just eating out. Probably not ideal, but I'm trying to keep things simple for now while we see what works and what could use upgrading.
  4. What wood are you using for the trim? Oak?
  5. Well done! It's much harder than people think. The trim woodwork looks great as well.
  6. Thanks. We installed a tankless water heater initially but then realized that they draw a heavy amount of amperage versus a conventional small tank water heater. So we just built a little enclosure for a small tank water heater sitting on the front arms of the trailer. We installed a new water well and a septic system, more for a future conventional home we plan to eventually build but we have the tiny house hooked up to it.
  7. I was thinking about doing a corrugated metal skin siding with a kind of modern profile on one of our tiny houses. But I was worried my handyman wouldn't know how to work with it as he's primarily familiar with wood sidings. Maybe if we do a third one.
  8. It's just for storage. Our handyman was hauling his tools to the site every day and we were locking building materials inside the tiny house or leaving them outside exposed to weather and potential theft. So we bought the container to store everything. We've needed one for the property for a long time. It was a single-use container (i.e., only used on a single trip from China or wherever) so it's in great condition and only cost a few grand delivered to the property. It's much more secure and weather safe than a wooden shed. To answer your other question, we are building a second tiny house which is why one of the photos shows a second trailer with just the OSB subfloor and bottom wall plates on it. We're pretty close to being done. It'll have a slightly different board and batten skin.
  9. That's right. We eventually want to build a larger home for R&R. The tiny house allows us to enjoy the land in the interim at a low cost in relative comfort, particularly for my retired folks.
  10. No, hired a local guy. About $2,300.
  11. Here's a tiny house I did on some family land. I was learning as I went, so far from perfect. But I think it came out pretty good all things considered. Ended up painting it twice as I didn't care for the first color we did.

I'm frankly fine with it. If they don't want my business, I'll spend my money elsewhere. Plus I like knowing the person I might give my money to is a bigot.
  13. I got one in an after Christmas sale for sweeping up dog hair. It did a good job but you have to spend time removing cords and other obstructions it can get stuck on plus the time to empty it and ensure it's charging properly. I ended up not using it much because I could sweep up the room faster than it took to prep it for the robo.
  14. Nice. I'm finishing up a trip in Seoul today.
  15. Not any long-lasting effects that I can discern. But the experience itself was lovely and I would definitely do it again in the future.
  16. I did a magic truffle and Ayahuasca trip last fall in Amsterdam. I hired a psychologist who specializes in psychedelic therapy to be my trip guide. Anyone can buy a bag of magic truffles there for $30 and trip on their own or with a friend. It was my first time taking a psychedelic and I didn't want to risk some bizarre reaction while alone so I paid a significant premium to hire a professional. I booked a comfortable and sound proof hotel room the guy recommended. It was the most intense experience of my life. Very fulfilling and emotional. The psychologist said mine was one of the more chill trips he had ever guided as I just quietly laid in bed with a pillow over my face listening to a playlist he had compiled based on my music taste. He said a lot of people have severe nausea and often vomit from chewing the truffles. Fortunately I didn't have any reaction other than disliking the taste which is pretty foul. I think I lost 5 pounds because my minimal amount of muscles were constantly tensioning and releasing the entire 5 hours and I was soaked in sweat by the end. The only thing I regret is he strongly suggested I immediately journal everything I remembered from the trip as it helps maintain the psychological benefits of tripping. I was so tired at the end that I didn't and instead went to a coffee shop around the corner and had a joint after a long nap. I'd recommend anyone doing it for the first time have a friend or professional trip sit for them as reactions to it apparently varies fairly dramatically. Also, lock up your phone and computer.
  17. About a month ago I bought a used Ford F250 from a Ford dealer for a carpenter/handyman who has done work for my family for many years. He didn't have the money on hand to purchase it, so I paid for it and he's going to work it off over time. The dealer issued the title in my name. Once I received it from the state, I signed the title and transferred it to my carpenter and filed the notice of transfer with the state. I saw on the TXDMV site that there's also a form for Application for Texas Title and/or Registration where one notes the sales price and tax due (https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/files/form_files/130-U.pdf). I would have purchased the truck in my guy's name originally, but he is from a different country and didn't have the type of ID with him that the dealer needed. I live out of Texas and was handling the purchase over the phone. So it was easier just to put the truck in my name and later transfer it to my guy. I'm not, I think, selling the vehicle to him. I am exchanging it for his work. So my question is whether I need to submit this other form and pay tax on the "sale" to my guy? I paid $20k for the truck so, if I owe a sales tax, it would be $1,250 based on their 6.25% sales tax. Does filing the notice of title transfer form automatically transfer the registration to the transferee, or is the Application for Registration, which has the tax stuff, the only way to do so?
  18. Any shows July 4th weekend?
  19. https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/law-rankings A&M is #29 in US News law school rankings this year. WTF?! I imagine an audit of the data they provided US News would be ugly.
  20. I finally deactivated my account. I was perusing it this afternoon and didn't recognize most of the tweeters on my feed and only saw a tiny fraction of tweets from people I actually followed and would like to read. It's just too much of a beating to read now. Probably for the best of my mental health.
