  1. 4. Quinn Ewers, Texas The strongest parts of Ewers' outing in on-field drills on Saturday were his solid mechanics and impressive accuracy. The Texas product was hitting receivers on all levels of the field with nice ball placement the first half of his throws, and he was really able to show off his nice footwork and lower-body mechanics with no pass rush to worry about. Ewers wasn't quite as strong as Dart was when he had to throw to his right side and on some of the deeper throws on "go" routes. The 2024 second-team All-SEC quarterback missed some easy throws on comeback routes to his right side and didn't show off much of the requisite anticipation on those routes. When it came time to throw deep, Ewers had some bad underthrows that took away from an otherwise solid performance. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2025/03/01/nfl-combine-2025-quarterback-rankings-draft/80969533007/
  2. Believe Babers had like 12-15 WRs have broken a 4.3 40. Santana Moss is the only one to have a 1,000 yard season in the NFL
  3. You are using the team record to try and deflect from the offensive performance. We are going to watch a lot of offensive Longhorns drafted and they finished 18th in FEI. That is not the ceiling. There is no way you can objectively say the talent on offense was 18th best in the country
  4. The defense reached its ceiling. It’s hard to say the offense came close to its ceiling. Special teams didnt play to expectations..
  5. Played some off-ball last year. Collins is the best pass rusher. He is going to be the Buck. It would be hard to start Moore and Collins on the EDGEs in the SEC. I see this as a way to increase the versatility with Moore and help his NFL prospects. I would not worry much about this. If it works out, awesome. If it does not, he is going to split reps with Collins in base downs and be on the field in pass rush situations.
  6. Georgia is the only game; you did not want to throw Arch in and Sark threw him in. Texas was going to playoffs with any solid QB. That may sound crazy, but Texas won 1 game in the regular season where the defense gave up 20 or more.
  7. Interesting they didn’t run the 40. I thought that was a test both could impress scouts. (Not that applies much to DL play)
  8. It could be something as simple as Quinn looked better in practice. IMO the biggest issue for Texas the last 2 seasons has been an inconsistent offense. When the offense was clicking it was a thing of beauty. Quinn looked great. It also was prone to vomit inducing stretches. It was not uncommon to see both in the same game. Sark could have just been betting on Quinn and the offense dampening the volatility or nervous about putting someone with limited experience into that environment.
  9. This is silly argument. Secondary will generally have 5 on the field vs 4 for a DL. The better argument is probably Akina vs Corey Raymond.
  10. He has had some issues at OSU with Knowles. The story from OSU was Knowles and Johnson finally went to the mat over DL coaching/technique. Jim wanted it taught a different way. Jim ended up winning. The rest is history.
  11. I just disagreed with the comp of Akina to Gary Patterson’s contributions joining the staff. I did not pontificate on the hire of Akina. Your opening paragraph seems like you agree. Not sure what triggered the second paragraph
  12. I would be happy to show her Palms Coverage
  13. Akina is not near the level of Gary in coordinating a defense or as a defensive mind. That has been proven in Akina's history, most recently in his brief DC job at Arizona. Arizona went from DFEI #24 under Nansen to #103 under Akina the following year. He is a great DB coach. He can coach technique with anyone in the profession. I trust him on the micro, not the macro level.
  14. Orphey will have his 3rd Cb drafted out of Rutgers in 3 years after this draft. That is quite an impressive feat.
  15. Texas had 3 coaches in the secondary last year. I don’t remember Hazelton ever hitting the road. This may make sense if you view it in that light. Sark had hired the second of 3 secondary coaches. The next one will have more recruiting chops. That is all I got
  16. probably shouldnt hire a position coach that is older than Bobby Burton. We need some standard. Would love to have him as an analyst.
  17. I meant interesting in the sense the Brown was considered this rising star, he got DC interviews, and then suddenly he was let go. Apparently, a lot of communication issues between the 2nd and 3rd levels. Db and LB coach were both fired. 18. Been some discussion that is why Orphey was hired. Sark wants to run more man coverage and press man. Texas was in the bottom quartile in man coverage. Rutgers has been in the top 20 in man/press man coverage the last few years. That tracks as Nansen seems to have been brought in to get away from 2 deep coverages. Texas was predominantly single high coverage for the first season under PK at Texas this past year.
  19. That seems more Sark's m.o. Young guy with ties to Southern recruiting ground or Cali. Grady Brown is interesting. He was considered an up and coming NFL guy and then the Steelers decided to part ways. They had a lot of blown coverages late in the season.
  20. 30 rising star Power Five assistant coaches you need to know - On3 Just some names. Carrington on the list. I could see Sark looking at Chris Collins (UK). Wilson just took a job at his alma mater (Florida), so cross him off
  21. There are a few things that can change the Run game. 1. Mobile Qb 2. Pocket presence. Not to get into a Quinn debate, but I think Manning can be better in the pocket. Keep Texas out of those 2nd and 15 situations, that are drive killers. 3. The Deep ball. Manning showed himself to be much more of gun slinger. That is a bit of double-edged sword, but I think safeties will be less aggressive firing downhill with Manning taking snaps. 3. Maybe Texas gets a better blocking out of a TE 4. With Conner and Majors out, there is possibility we finally see "Big Humans" we have been promised. More downhill OL, instead of OZ centric.
  22. It is a bit different by position. Rb is one of the few that you usually see those flashes, if they are going to be great. That does not mean a freshman that looked like a freshman cannot improve. It just means the ceiling might not be 1st team All-conference/All-American type player or the odds of that happening are long. They can still be a serviceable player. Baxter's health being a legitimate concern and a room that looks more solid than dynamic at this point, I can definitely see why people would argue for the need for a portal RB. Perhaps one of the freshmen will show those flashes with the football in their hands in practice and quell some worries. The one concern from last year is blocking from that group. It was generally poor last year. Baxter was kind of unicorn in that area as freshman. Not sure you can count on a freshman blocking in year 1, even if Baxter proved it is possible.
  23. Interesting PK does not officially have a position anymore. I wonder if he will stick with the Edges or float between position groups.
  24. They are on different developmental tracks. You could argue Ojo has the higher ceiling, but he is behind Turntine as a player right now. Turntine is more Banks and Ojo is Cam Williams/Goosby. Personally, I dont think you can ever take too many LT prospects. Its like CBs. A miss at LT can be a solid player at another OL spot. Just think of Banks. He was a great LT for Texas, some think he doesnt have the length to be a hihg end LT in the NFL. How good would the OL have been, if there were 3 guys like Banks on the 2024 OL. Worst of the 3 would have been the best Guard on the OL.
  25. More interested in Orphey. The more you look the better he the hire looks. He was given 2 contract extensions at Rutgers and a significant bump from 400k to 500k in his last extension at Rutgers. You only do that if he is garnering interest. Mark Orphey is rumored to be on the move from Rutgers football - that was Ole Miss He has 2 drafted players in his 3 years at Rutgers with a chance to add to that in this year's draft Notable 2024 players Eric Rogers, CB After three years at Northern Illinois, Rogers transferred to Piscataway to play for Orphey. In the most recent 2024 campaign, Rogers had 34 tackles with 1.0 sack. He forced two fumbles, recorded one interception, and had three pass breakups. Rogers was Rutgers’ highest graded defender according to Pro Football Focus. His 81.5 grade led the team, as did his coverage grade of 80.3. Opponents threw at Rogers 36 times, completing 21 of their passes for 215 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Robert Longerbeam, CB A four-plus year contributor who arrived at Rutgers as an athlete, Longerbeam appeared in 53 games with 31 starts at cornerback. He earned an invite to the 2025 NFL Combine. During the 2024 season, Longerbeam posted 45 tackles with 1.5 for loss. He had two interceptions and 11 pass breakups. He’s a two-time All-Big 10 honorable mention selection. He earned a 71.4 defensive grade per Pro Football Focus with a 73.7 coverage grade. When thrown at, opponents were 31-for-55 for 360 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Drafted pupils from Rutgers 2023 – Christian Braswell – Jacksonville Jaguars – Round 6 Braswell posted a defensive grade of 86.3 in 2022 with a strong coverage grade of 87.1. Opponents were 24-for-41 throwing against him, tallying 218 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. [Join Inside Texas TODAY and get 7 days for just ONE DOLLAR!] 2024 – Max Melton – Arizona Cardinals – Round 2 Melton played in all 17 games for the Cardinals this year with 51 tackles, a forced fumble, and five passes defended. At Rutgers in 2023, he posted a defensive grade of 73.5 and a coverage grade of 74.1. Opponents were 24 for 44 against Melton, notching 252 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.
