  1. Wonder if that means virus claims, or simply can't sue MLB for revenue (or both)
  2. The elephant in the luxury suites is how beloved Gundy is and will continue to be among their fans and donors. It's not just an OK State problem either, I wish today's players would start asking hard questions about the general racial environment that sustains so many top programs.
  3. Confederate memorial in Pioneer Park Dallas has been approved for removal. There's supposed to be a BLM rally there around now (4 pm CT), and also Dallas Sons of the Confederacy were planning to protest and encouraged their members to bring guns. I don't see anything on Twitter so hopefully all is well
  4. Gladbach Bayern Munich piped in loud fan whistling after a Gladbach goal was disallowed. Nice Then Bayern handed the opening goal on a foolish keeper turnover
  5. Ah, I missed that they were not mass testing like some others, that is indeed reckless. But point remains there is plenty of time for correction, and this could spur other cheap-ass schools to take it more seriously.
  6. And I wonder if Abbott told the ADs that message or vice versa
  7. I wouldn't read much into the UH situation, give them credit for being cautious. I think the Premier League had around six positives on the first round of testing, and they had it down to zero including staff members within a couple weeks. They've had a handful since then as the season is about to start with no major issues. CFB teams are several weeks away from having meaningful practices, so there is plenty of time to get everybody in and tested. Being college sports, there will be shenanigans and probably virus sparks popping up in every conference. Looks like that will be life in 2020...cross your fingers (after washing) and hope it works out.
  8. All kinds of excuses going around. I bet they just can't fathom being confined to a single massive resort for ~6 weeks with no family or females around. Especially at a non-luxury resort. NBA will have to re-think the "bubble".
  9. I'd be shocked if they do temp checks at major stadiums. They cost money and aren't totally reliable. Can you imagine some minimum wage or maybe even health care volunteer telling a five-figure donor he can't go to the game because the gun says he's got a fever?
  10. Ah, the Cosmo. So much for the craps table spacing rules. How long until the dealers get to scrap the masks too, I wonder. Posting that again with the intro from Seth Myers' writer...
  11. Like Louisville with the stripper parties, we can't prove it was more than one coach acting out, but it falls on the school not to hire guys who behave that way (taking bribes to influence amateurs on their pro decisions). I admit what specifically Evans did with the money is unclear, so this has a chance to reverse on appeal.
  12. I mean, this is in the NCAA's wheelhouse - coach caught red-handed taking bribes for the purpose of directing the money of amateur players who would turn pro. It's silly but explicitly not allowed. This isn't like the assistant was selling fake Rolexes on the side for his own benefit. Also, the NCAA has rightly been dismissing the "acted on his own" excuse for several years now. You can't just take the head coach's word for it, especially when he just hired an assistant whose brother happens to be the No. 1 recruit in the US. Again, it's silly and it happens everywhere but this is what the infractions guys gobble up when they have solid proof. That said, it would also be typical NCAA to reduce the penalty on appeal. That way they won't look as bad when KU also doesn't get banned.
  13. City of Philadelphia is encouraging protesters to get free COVID tests a week from now, and they only need to say they were exposed to someone with COVID. No need to mention the protests...good move, hope it catches on anyplace where the HCW have enough tests
  14. Today's news seems like an inevitable step in the final stretch of negotiations. Players said no to changing salary structure; owners said no to 114 games. They still have a few days to find an acceptable number of games with prorated salaries. Presumably in the 50-81 range.
  15. The NBA will only conflict with the NFL over a period of 3-5 weekends, and you can add one weekend for CFB as well. I assume they'll try to slot games away from NFL, but no doubt there will be a few nights they go head-to-head and will get hammered. It will be interesting to hear why they took their time on making the announcement and then allowed so much time before reporting to Orlando. Probably based on feedback they got from the teams as well as the medical side on logistics of mass COVID testing.
  16. Oct. 12 is the latest date for game 7 of the finals. So maybe two teams play that late, but pretty much everyone will be done by late September. They can make it work, especially if they allow expanded rosters and build in more off days at the beginning of 2020-21. ESPN.com story
  17. It doesn't say when the protest was, but that's a quick turnaround to get a test and learn the results. Have to wonder if he contacted the virus before the protest, or maybe it's a false positive.
  18. City of Philadelphia removed the controversial Frank Rizzo statue overnight...smart move, finally
  19. I agree with most of this, but will point out the police union heads, and most of the actual officers, are far from being Democrats. We're lucky when they're not out-and-out white nationalists (the Minneapolis guy is). So that kind of undercuts the leadership. Also while I cringe at Biden, I think much of his cabinet will be semi-competent and maybe rebuild some sort of functionality of the executive branch. For the near term at least...
  20. The 50 game season won't happen, neither will 114. Both are kind of preposterous under the circumstances. But at least the owners have put prorated salaries back on the table. Just need to find the number of games to work for both and then we can get going.
  21. Since it's come up a lot on this thread, here's how one epidemiologist would deploy testing. I don't think most of the country has this kind of access to testing yet, and it may be more expensive than the $50 per test noted in the article. But by September it may be realistic.
  22. Deleted - not real
  23. Reporting from Philly, the mayor actually said today he hates the Rizzo statue and it will be removed within a month. They bumped us up to a 6 pm curfew and cops are clearing streets even an hour before than. Just watched them set up a rolling detention center in front of my building. Like 100 cops, mostly on bicycle, swarmed in chasing a very benign "No justice, no peace" group of protesters. Most of the people scattered but a few got tackled and handcuffed. Detention vans sitting with doors open in case they swoop up anyone else. I need to walk the dog, guess I better do it before curfew. I was thinking they wouldn't fuck with me after dark just taking a dog to the park, but after seeing them in action I probably should reconsider.
