It really was a badass play.  Harmon is so great.  11 games so far and she's basically been the starting PG for 9 of them.

25.8 minutes per game
42% from the field
33.3% from three
77.8% FT
11.6 ppg
4.7 rpg
52 assists to 23 turnovers
22 steals

Vic was right to rave on her before the season - she's the real deal.  Freshman of the Year in the Big 12 type season.

When this teams get Moore back and Hunter gets more minutes, look the fuck out.

Big 12 players only:

16th in scoring
23rd in rebounding
10th in FT %
4th in total assists and 4th in assists per game
6th in assist to turnover per game
5th in steals

Typically what Schaefer does with these types is he runs full court press and makes big girls like that uncomfortable playing that style.

We really need one of Gaston or Moore to play that style though.

Lee cooked Baylor because they let her get in the half court and use her size in the paint. Gotta make her run.

I went back to look at how we handled Lee last year - with Collier and Ebo mostly.

@ KSU - Collier played 40 minutes, Ebo played 14 minutes and Gaston played 6 minutes
Lee: 17 minutes, 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 turnovers, 4 blocks, 1 steal and we got her to foul out

KSU - Collier played 39 minutes, Ebo played 3 minutes, Gaston didn't play
Lee: 13 minutes, 5 points, 4 rebounds and we got her to foul out

She's good, but I trust what Vic is going to scheme to stop her.

Women's college basketball Power Rankings - Are upsets a sign of shake-ups to come in SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten races? (espn.com)

6. Texas Longhorns (10-1)
Previous ranking:
 6
This week: vs. Texas Tech (Wednesday), at Baylor (Sunday)

Texas started the Big 12 season on Sunday with a 62-51 win at Oklahoma State. Next Sunday, the Longhorns will look to end their losing streak against Baylor, which Texas hasn't defeated since 2017.

Quote

Kansas State hadn't beaten Baylor since Jan. 27, 2004. Baylor had not lost a Big 12 opener since the 2015-16 season -- when the Bears fell at Oklahoma State -- but then didn't lose again until the Elite Eight.

That 2004 Baylor loss at K-State came to a Wildcats team that had four players who all saw time in the WNBA, led by Nicole Ohlde, who won a championship with Phoenix in 2009. The current Wildcats might have a future WNBA player in center Ayoka Lee, who had 32 points and 10 rebounds versus the Bears.

Baylor post players NaLyssa Smith and Queen Egbo had a combined 16 points and 11 rebounds, as the Bears ended up relying more on their perimeter offense than they probably wanted to. If there's a common denominator in Baylor's three losses -- the others were to Maryland and Michigan -- it's at the foul line, where the Terps, Wolverines and Wildcats were a combined 55-of-66 to the Bears' 31-of-42.

Baylor, of course, is under new leadership this season with coach Nicki Collen, and some bumps in the road were inevitable. Baylor has won or tied for the regular-season Big 12 title the past 11 years in a row. The Bears have been outright champions in 10 of those seasons and shared with West Virginia in the other (2014).

They have a matchup with Texas on Sunday (3 p.m. ET, ESPN); the Longhorns have won just once (2017) in the series since 2011. Baylor's Big 12 favorite status might really be shaken if the Longhorns prevail.

Baylor and TCU was just cancelled because of Covid issues for Baylor.

Right..............

The shine wore off Collen pretty quickly and now Baylor is panicking.  They're about to be second tier in the conference again.  Welcome back to life before Mulkey.

Game 12: #9/10 Texas (10-1, 1-0 Big 12) vs Texas Tech (7-5, 0-1 Big 12)

Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022 – 7:00 p.m. Central
Frank Erwin Center (16,540) – Austin, Texas

GameDay Quick Facts:
TELEVISION: The game will be televised nationally on LHN. Alex Loeb (pxp) and Andrea Lloyd (analyst) will call the action.
• RADIO: 105.3 The Bat broadcasts every UT game on the statewide network. Craig Way (pxp) and Kathy Harston (analyst) will call the action. Check TexasSports.com for a listing of affiliates carrying the game.
• SERIES: Texas leads, 76-30. Last meeting: W, 72-53 (Jan. 30, 2021; Austin)

Notables:

STARTING STRONG: No. 9/10 Texas (10-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12)  is looking for its 8th-straight victory and a 2-0 start to conference play Wednesday evening as they welcome in Texas Tech (7-5, 0-1) for their Big 12 home opener inside the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns are coming off a 62-51 victory in their league opener at Oklahoma State on Sunday.

HELLO TOP 10: After hovering between the No. 11 and No. 12 spots the past four weeks, UT finally broke into the top 10 in Monday's Associated Press Top 25 Poll. The Longhorns came in at No.9 marking their highest AP ranking since the end of the 2017-18 season (No.8). Texas is now the highest-ranked team in the Big 12 in front of Iowa State (No. 12), Baylor (No. 14) and Oklahoma (No. 23). Texas came in at No. 10 in the latest USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll

FINDING A WAY: As COVID-19 continues to disrupt schedules around the country, Texas fell victim this past week and were forced to cancel their final nonconference contest vs Alcorn State due to COVID protocols. With several players unavailable for practice throughout the week, the Longhorns were able to clear enough athletes to compete Sunday allowing them to grind out the win shorthanded.

THE SCHAEFER FORMULA: Longhorn head coach Vic Schaefer makes no secret in the way his teams have found success over the years. Relentless full court defensive pressure, attention to detail, and limiting turnovers and mistakes have been built in to the identity of his programs. The 2021-22 Longhorns are no different ranking among the best in the country in several defensive categories.  UT currently ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 18 in the NCAA holding opponents to just 53.1 points per game. They also lead the league and rank No. 7 nationally in turnovers forced at 24.1 per contest.

SCOUTING THE LADY RAIDERS:  Texas Tech carries a 7-5 record overall to start their 2021-22 season and are coming off a 97-91 loss to Oklahoma at home in their Big 12 opener on Sunday. With senior captain and leading scorer Vivian Gray (18.0 PPG) out due to injury, Texas Tech is led offensively by Rhyle McKinney (10.9 PPG) and Taylah Thomas (10.6 PPG). Thomas also leads the team on the glass and ranks No.4 in the league averaging 9.5 rebounds per game.

NEXT: Following Wednesday's matchup, the Longhorns will head up I-35 for a premier rivalry matchup at No. 14/13 Baylor. Tip is slated for 2 p.m. CT and will air nationally on ESPN.

I shouldn't assume, but with the shortened COVID period, everyone should be back for Tech.  Some game reps for Gaston prior to Baylor is key (and Moore if she's back - I am going to keep willing this into existence).

Tech is small - one 6'3 player (JR Tofaeono) and one 6'4 player (FR Wenger).  Bryn Gerlich is a 6'0 forward, so she is comparable to Warren.  Lots of transfers on the roster - Bre'Amber Scott (ULAR), Ella Tofaeono (Texas A&M), Rhyle McKinney (SMU), Bryn Gerlich (Ok State), Vivian Gray (Ok State), Taylah Thomas (Arky) and Tatum Veitenheimer (OU).

7-5, 0-1 in Big 12 play.  Lost a high scoring one to OU, 97-91 on Sunday.

Wins: SELA, Weber State, Lamar, Texas State, Ball State, New Mexico, UNLV
Losses: Old Dominion (ouch) by 14, Georgia by 10, Ole Miss by 15, LSU by 14, OU by 8

  • They average 67.3 ppg but allow 64.8 ppg
  • Shoot 46% overall and 33.5% from three - opponents hit 38.5% of their shots and 33.6% from three
  • 67% FT
  • Winning the rebounding margin by 3.9 (37.6 - 33.7)
  • Average 17.3 turnovers per game and they are -4.5 compared to their opponents (only force 12.8 per game)

They turn it over more than they turn you over - but they can score points.

You have to watch Lexy Hightower (43% from three).  Gerlich (37%) and McKinney (37%) can hit it - otherwise everyone else is pretty bad or has barely attempted any.  Those 3 take the most - 65% of their three point shots.

Gray averages 18 ppg, 6.3 rebounds.  She makes them go.  McKinney is at 10.9 ppg, Thomas at 10.6 ppg and 10.9 rpg and Hightower at 10.0 ppg.  Gerlich is the best passer on the team - she's a 6'0 forward who leads them in assists (51).

Avoid the disaster in Lubbock last year, Texas lost 74-66. Warren had 14 points and 5 rebounds, JAT had 12 points and 3 assists, Ebo had 4 points and 3 rebounds but only played 10 minutes and Gaston had 1 rebound and 1 block in 6 minutes.  Taylor, Warren and JAT all fouled out of that game and Texas shot 33%, which is why they lost - Texas shot one less FT than Tech, won the rebounding by 3, won the TO battle by 1 but they couldn't hit shit and Tech hit 44% of their shots.

If we are indeed at full strength for this game, it's hopefully getting Moore some minutes, getting Hunter more minutes and tuning up some rotations for Baylor (if that game happens).

Junior guard Bre'Amber Scott for Tech spent her first 2 years at Miss St under Vic.  Mini-reunion of sorts.

AT MISSISSIPPI STATE

Sunday's game with Baylor has been postponed.

Fuck you Baylor.   Took that KSU loss pretty hard - suddenly can't play at all, 5 days out.

I'm sure the league is waiting to see if any other Big 12 game this weekend is also postponed and possibly move games around - the SEC did it with SCe, they were supposed to play Ole Miss on Jan 2 and it was postponed and MSU took over the slot because their Dec 30 game against Florida got postponed.

One school I have no trust in when it comes to Covid is Baylor. Wanna bet they're above the 6 player threshold and simply don't want to play this game with a limited roster?

I agree.

With the shortened isolation period, I don't see how you can get 2 games in a row postponed unless you have literally 0 players available 5 days from now.

This is becoming an issue though.  I don't think the leagues will be able to finish all the games that are getting postponed the first 2 weeks of January.

ACC just lost 3 games for tomorrow (Clemson @ FSU, Virginia @ VT, GT @ Duke)

SCe just said they'll be missing several players for their game against #13 LSU on Thursday

Big 12 lost one game tonight and one game Sunday, both involving Baylor
