If you were picking a train trip to do, what would you choose?

Beauty of it is that Western Kansas is in the dark both directions.

Hey, fuck you. ❤️

With recent line additions, you can passenger train from Malaysia all the way up to Beijing (yes you change trains a couple times). That'd be a marathon adventure.

Penny Whistle Park

This place is a run down, indoor soccer spot now.  Or it was a couple of years ago. I had the pleasure of playing a season here, during the summer, w/o AC.  The iron gate, Pennywhistle Park sign is still there.

It started getting light by La Junta, just in time to see Elk and Pronghorn along the tracks. I've done my time in places like Elkhart, Turpin and Syracuse, don't need to see that again. On the way back, it got dark just after the Raton Tunnel. Perfect timing. We did coach on the way down and I learned my lesson. We upgraded to a sleeper for the return and it was much better. Pretty sure we are going to book Chicago to Seattle next fall and see the Rockies. Probably fly home from Seattle. Washington and Oregon are the only states in the Lower 48 that I am missing from my been-there list. Get that done before I croak.

The Amtrak Cascades route from Seattle to Vancouver. The Portland route is shorter and a beautiful ride.

In 1986, I took an Amtrak from San Diego (Change in LA) to Albuquerque. Great views from the dome car but the action was in the lounge car. They were recent retirees from around the country. Their wives were fed up with them hanging around the house. So they rode the rails, drank beer, played cards and told stories.

I have a friend in Florida who is a conductor on the East coast Amtrak runs (unsure if it is the AutoTrain, Silver Meteor Grand Floridian) & he's been doing this for 28 years.

The biggest I ssue with delays (going "in the hole") is a lack of double tracks the entire run & you have to be timed to share the rail with freight.

In some ways you can compare American rail travel to a cruise ship. You can take a slower route & enjoy the view or simply "get there" & enjoy the destination & everything in your destination city.

One train trip? Anywhere?
It'd almost certainly be the Maharaja's Express in India.

There is also a cool one in Scotland as well as Japan, but that one is lottery only.

I took the Amtrak from Oceanside to LA this morning. NIce ride.

I'd like to do that ABQ trip sometime, and fly back.
