If we get Brenlee, our pitching staff looks like:

JR Teagan Kavan (staff ace) - 48-8, 2.18 ERA, 365 K in 337.2 IP, 8 saves, 2x All American
SR Citlaly Gutierrez - 34-9, 2.17 ERA, 208 K in 283.2 IP, 7 saves
SO Cam Salmon - 7-2, 2.48 ERA, 66 K in 62 IP, 1 save
SO Brenlee Gonazles - 2-0, 2.84 ERA, 12 K in 12.1 IP
FR Hannah Wells - #1 pitcher in the 2025 class, National and Texas Gatorade Player of the Year

That is a salty looking staff.  No pressure on Hannah Wells at all.

If Mike can do with Brenlee what he did with Estelle, it would be a weapon out of the bullpen

Czech came to Texas after one year at NCST (3.14 ERA in 73.2 innings with 39 strikeouts).  Went 34-9 at Texas with a 2.78 ERA and 183 strikeouts in 249.2 IP in 3 seasons.  Especially as Mike bulked up the staff with Mac/TK/Cit and Czech didn't have to pitch as many games, so she became more effective as a lefty changeup out of the pen as she went from starting 16 games as a sophomore to only 5 as a senior (30 games and 103.2 IP as a sophomore -> 24 games and 87.1 IP as a junior -> 23 games and 58.2 IP as a senior)

Rankings are arbitrary and reductive, but calling Hannah Wells the #1 pitching recruit is a bit of a stretch? She's listed as #14 pitcher by On3, not even ranked in top 20 by Prep Softball

No idea how good the comp is, but whenever I look at Wells I can't help but see a possible Pickens starter kit. Huge right arm. That said, I don't think Pickens really had the option of focusing on being a monster collegiate bat.

Chelsea Spencer has stepped down as head coach at Cal. She led the Bears for five years and made three NCAA tournament appearances.

Former Texas assistant who went back to her alma mater.  Weird situation, she just signed a new contract too.

Explains the Cal catcher who transferred to Tech

Apparently some travel ball stats…

Think Nichols is the day 1 starter at 3rd

Quote

Mataia Lawson is the leadoff playing shortstop hitting .459 with 3 HRs, 2 triples, and 4 doubles and hits on the left side.

Jaycie Nichols primarily is the leadoff and 2 hole occasionally playing 3rd base hitting on the left side. She is currently hitting .492 with 9 HRs, 6 doubles, and 2 triples.

Ryan Brown - Texas -> Tennessee -> ASU

Hopefully she finally finds what she is looking for

11 ABs at Texas (.182 with 1 HR and 2 RBI) in 2024
11 ABs at Tennessee (.273 with 1 double and 3 RBI) in 2025

That is not much of a resume to take into the transfer portal - ASU must be desperate

Her and the 3rd baseman are the only people we’re pursuing right?

That I’m aware of

I hope it is Brenlee over Lindemuth - we need the lefty change-of-pace arm.  Nichols looks like the real deal to start day 1 at 3rd

Atwood
Stewie
Goode
Martinez
Nichols
Altmeyer
Henry
Maloney

Your batting order first 7 would be 4 seniors (Maloney, Atwood, Goode, Altmeyer) and 3 juniors (Henry, Martinez, Stewie), so there's not a lot of offensive pressure on Nichols and Wells/Lawson/Crabtree

Overall, WCWS > MCWS

But the MCWS finals outdrew the women's - I cannot imagine why.... being a Saturday and Sunday, by itself, while Texas-Tech was a Wednesday, Thursday (NBA finals game) and Friday

What’s our current numbers?

21 with Altmeyer, so this is 22 and we still have room for Gonzales or Lindemuth

For unknown reason,  Anderson was not on roster for 2025.    Listed as a utility player.   Hometown Dripping Springs

Anderson was a freshman in 2024 but wasn’t on OSU’s roster this past season. She played in 43 games in 2024, hitting .250 in 16 at-bats.

Among the fastest players in the Gajewski era ... One of OSU’s top options on the basepaths, appearing in 43 games and starting five ... Finished with a .250 batting average in 16 at-bats with 16 runs scored ... Successful on four of her six stolen base attempts .

Taylor Anderson

Catchers: SR Reese Atwood, FR Anne Wallace (2)
INF: JR Katie Stewart, SR Leighann Goode, RS JR Viviana Martinez, FR Caigan Crabtree, FR MaTaia Lawson, FR Jaycie Nichols, SO Shylien Brister (7)
OF: FR Alisa Sneed, RS SR Ashton Maloney, JR Kayden Henry, SR Kaiah Altmeyer (4)
Utility: FR Drea Wilson, SR Kaydee Bennett, JR Victoria Hunter, JR Adayah Wallace, SO (RS SO?) Taylor Anderson (5)
Pitchers: FR Hannah Wells, JR Teagan Kavan, SO Cam Salmon, SR Citlaly Gutierrez (4)

22 if we did indeed land Anderson.  Still hoping for Brenlee Gonzales to make 23

That is a very experienced upper class roster with 12 juniors and seniors.  13 total players on roster would have WCWS playing experience, with 9 of them having had multiple trips:

Reese - 2 years
Stewie - 2 years
Goode - 2 years
Vivi - 1 year (with a 2nd trip while redshirting in 2025)
Maloney - 2 years (with a 3rd trip while redshirting in 2022)
Henry - 2 years
Bennett - 1 year
Hunter - 2 years
Wallace - 2 years
Anderson - 1 year (2024 OKST)
Kavan - 2 years
Cam - 1 year
Citlaly - 2 years

Sure seems like Mike is looking ahead so he doesn't have to rely too much on the portal in the future

  • Scott -> Nichols
  • Goode -> Lawson/Crabtree
  • Atwood -> Mia Clemmer (2026 stud)
  • Maloney/Altmeyer -> Anderson/Sneed
  • Henry -> Booe/South (2026 kids)
  • Martinez -> Annie Abdullah (2026 stud, #2 overall in her class, #1 IF)

Not to mention the pitching plan:

2025 - TK, Cit, Cam, Wells
2026 - TK, Cam, Wells, Doty (#4 in her class, #2 pitcher)

Will be interesting to see what pre-conf tournaments Mike opts for - we are not on the list for either Clearwater or Mary Nutter for 2026

Tech is playing both, so unfortunately, they will get some big-name OOC matchups.  Was hoping everyone would opt not to play them for their tampering BS

We did not play any of the "big name" neutral site tournaments in 2025
We went to Clearwater in 2024
We went to the NFCA Division 1 Leadoff Classic in 2023
We went to Clearwater in 2022 (that was so bad)
We did not play any of the "big name" neutral site tournaments in 2021
We did the Puerta Vallarta Classic and Judi Garman in 2020
We went to Clearwater in 2019

We played in Tucson during February this year....playing 4 teams, including Stanford, who we lost to.

Yes i know

I specifically said the big neutral site tournaments, not those who were hosted by another school.  Clearwater, Puerta Vallarta, NFCA Lead Off Classic, Garman and Mary Nutter are the big ones.

We go to plenty of tournaments hosted by home teams (Arizona, Ohio State) and host 2-3 of our own every year. We've gone to tournaments hosted by Arizona, Bama, ASU, FGCU, USF and UCLA under mike.

But the big-time non-conf matchups are in the neutral site tournaments.  You can go a whole weekend playing super regional/WCWS caliber teams for 4 straight days.  No offense to the ones we host or the ones hosted by other schools, but it is 2 big names and 2 nobodies.

2024 Clearwater - 4 ranked teams in 3 days (Weather cancelled 2 of them)
2023 NFCA - 4 ranked teams in 3 days
2023 Clearwater - 5 ranked (or RV) teams in 3 days

Besides Gonzales and Lindemuth, I believe both Miali Guachino (Ole Miss) and Maya Johnson (Belmont) have not committed anywhere yet

Do not believe we got a public visit from Guachino (UCLA, South Carolina, OU) and unsure if Maya did make it to campus or not.

TK recently followed Guachino.  Atwood followed Madi Hays from Kansas (originally via UTSA), as she did with Taylor Anderson.

Read a comment that someone was trying to convince UCLA to tamper with Cam Salmon and get her into the portal after UCLA lost Terry and Fisher.

Needless to say, Cam is still a Horn.

That leaves 1 spot, right? I assume Lindemuth?

This is 23, I believe. I’m fine with or without her. I think Nichols will be a day 1 star

Altmeyer is a one year rental to cover Stewie moving to the INF. Likely just gives Sneed time to adjust to the college game / defensive sub

Anderson is likely a Maloney replacement in 2027; PR and defensive sub in 2026

Brenlee is a lefty we didn’t have on staff, so she’s not blocking anyone

Lindemuth would block the freshmen from development and PT

Nichols is the Utah girl? That was their Gatorade Poty?

While I like Lindemuth as a player, I agree that adding more talent beyond Gonzales seems like overkill. From mid-March or so forward there should be a pretty locked-in lineup for every game, and we already know nearly all of the starters. If we had another small/weak freshman class coming in this fall depth would be a concern, but we obviously don't.

Yep. The 2026 class is foundational. Between Crabtree, Lawson, Nichols, Sneed and Wells, you have 5 of the 7 who will be starters eventually.

Let Nichols and Lawson fight for 3B
