Barney Giles

Second row…far left

It’s unique that they had “Texas” on their jerseys for media pictures for the school and to send back home.  Even going back to my Dad’s days in the early 60s, but you NEVER saw that on game day, home or away, until the late 70- early 80s.  Even pictures of Earl’s #20 doesn’t have Texas on it.

Maybe Coach Akers started it.  I know he put stripes down the pant leg to match the stripes on the jersey sleeve.  Freddy chained smoked with the best of them, as I remember walking with he and Dad from the parking lot to his office, all under and on the West side back then.

Met Dad for that game, as it was my first since I got back from Korea. Tim McGraw was on stage after the game and had really never heard of him at the time. That’s when I first heard “Indian Outlaw,” as it was fitting as I was stationed near Geronimo’s burial place.  I received a speeding ticket by an OK State Trooper on the way back to Fort Sill after that Texas vs OU sucks game.  Our seats were between the 10 and GL of the endzone of the S Clark stop/play!  Told the toll both guy and the Trooper “Hook’em!!!” after paying and receiving my ticket.

Looking forward to 54, as that was my # in Jr High and HS, thanks to Randy White growing up - Cowboys fan!    Always checked the roster each year to see who was wearing 54.

Amazon.com: Mike Baab football card (Texas Longhorns) 2011 Upper Deck #39 1978-1981 Center : Collectibles & Fine Art

Tough SOB... had classes with him.

Mike 'The Baabarian' played 149 games in 11 seasons in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs

After retiring from the NFL, Mike competed in the Scottish Highland Games, winning the Masters World Championship in the 45-49 age class in 2005

Two years ago, I went down a "rabbit hole" and found some interesting stuff on Mike Baab... he's considered one of the best centers for the Cleveland Browns.  In 2008, Baab was inducted into the Football Hall of Honor at the University of Texas.

The Life And Career Of Mike Baab (Complete Story)

By Jimmy Swartz February 18, 2022

Baab also attracted attention for something off the field in 1986.  He starred in a 17min short film (produced by his wife) called "Masters of the Gridiron” .   The film, which raised money for the United Way and featured various other Browns players, was based on “Conan the Barbarian” movie. 😋

Baab stated:

When we meet each other now, [our lines and character names] are the first thing we say to each other. When I see [Cleveland linebacker] Clay Matthews now, I call him Clayrock. They all call me Baabarian. It’s just what we do. All the names came from this silly video.”

The film remains a good memory for Baab and other players who appeared in the film.

Even before the film, Baab was a popular player, as a small subsection of fans in Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium called themselves “Baab’s Barbarians” and dressed in medieval costumes and carried (fake) swords.
