My guesses -

Whitney will go elsewhere to find a full time role

With her leaving and Devin graduating, Addy can slot into the double sub OPP position. I assume Texas will continue running it

I wonder if Anja will portal again. Texas needs to find another DS, preferably more of a middle back defender. Gary is very good in left back, so you could run her as L in that position and a DS in middle back.

I’d love to upgrade at MB. Or add more depth

Will be interesting to see if Henley and AVW have an open competition for the second OH spot

Biggest ? is if Elliot will find another setter, which would likely force Ella or Binney out. Unlikely we have 4 of them on the roster

If they're funding 18 spots it's doable.

I don't have a strong opinion on all of this right now. I'll watch what Elliott does. I know to compete for another national championship we need better serving and more production out of the middle. I know most people would strongly argue better setting. That's not my opinion, but I'm also not trying to say Swindle is the best setter in college volleyball. I just think she's good enough, and she's bringing intangibles that aren't measured in the box scores but end up making a difference in the final score. But again, there's a strong resistance from a lot of quarters regarding that, and I'm not here to pick a fight. I'll just agree to disagree.

I do know in watching that Wisconsin match it wasn't Fuerbringer that was making the difference in that match to me. It was Colyer and Vajagic terminating on terrible third contacts from beyond the 10' line on roll shots that found the floor. Over and over again. Those should have been excellent transition opportunities, and instead they ended rally after rally.

I'm also concerned about our littles with Halter departing. Not saying I should be. But she was a constant over the last 4 years and now she'll need to be replaced.

On the topic of volleyball, aggy winning a natty would effectively end Texas’ monopoly on the sport in the state of Texas. I know we root against aggy in all sports, but it’s imperative they don’t win a national title or those in-state and out of state recruiting battles will get a lot tougher and more costly for us

We did the whole replace Swindle thing with Carlson and that was an epic fail. Just have her split time her senior year and use her intangibles to our advantage. We are not far off right now.

I watched highlights of new setter she is smaller but puts up a good ball.

Maybe we can find a serving specialist that can come and serve for Gary when its her rotation.

If there's a hit, I think it's only a brief blip on the big picture. As of today, which school is better in women's sports overall?

Making the Elite Eight with a young VB team (as opposed to aggy's 9 seniors) was a decent run. Not the ending we wanted, but we're a blueblood most people see as being on an upward trajectory again. And that new facility can't hurt.

Softball and basketball are clearly well entrenched and have even fuller talent pipelines at the moment. They'll likely keep contending. Now throw in rowing, swim/dive, tennis, golf, track/field and beach VB, along with new blood coaching soccer, and most women's sports are either already elite or showing signs of getting there. Aggy and other schools will come and go in certain sports, but CDC isn't going to let any area lag for long.

I think aggy player their absolute best yesterday, and by a fair margin.  I would be shocked if they advanced on Thursday.

aggy stars had to align for this year to get their experienced players to gel....it does not happen that often.

I think Nebraska was shocked, to put it mildly....think they underestimated them some....and it cost them....bigly.

The epic fail was not getting an experienced MB in the portal and having to break in 2 new MBs (Singletary and Ames, a true FR)

Also should have gone after an elite L/DS. Because of that, we had Wenaas having to pass all 6 rotations and play defense in the back row.

JE instead went after 2 Opposites in the portal when he already had Byrd, Kahahawai, Tomkinson, and Helmers wasting away on the bench.

An all-around weak team performance, no doubt. I did think it was odd having Harvey suddenly reappear for long stretches after being a chronic DNP lately.

Point taken, but we didn't set middles much all year.

Also fair, but between Stafford and Spears, you were getting those kills

Posted

They said last night that 45% of Texas points came from freshmen.  Im guessing 30 or so of that from Spears, rest from AVW, maybe a tiny bit from Harvey.

Then what another 30% from Stafford? A few from Devin, and a smaller few from Bunton and Ames?  And random points from Ella throwing over?

Posted (edited)

Yeah probably

280 and 358 for AVW and Spears. 78 for Harvey - 44%

516 for Stafford - 31%

53 for Swindle, 149 for Ames, 33 for Whit, 56 for Devin, 96 for Bunton - 387 is barely more than Spears’ total kills

Which worked fine against most all the competition, but a constant threat in the middle is what is needed to open the floor against elite competition.

This is one I actually have reliable inside knowledge. she wants to win a natty and doesn't think she can do it at Texas. Also didn't like getting benched earlier in the year.

From June 2025:

Q: Can you share your recruiting story and why you decommitted from Nebraska?

Ayden: "I committed to Nebraska soon after June 15th, but later realized Texas was a better fit. I decommitted in October of my senior year. It was stressful, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Everyone’s recruiting journey is different. I emailed coaches, sent highlights, and showed interest early. If you're thinking of transferring or decommitting, do it. You have to follow your heart and avoid regrets."

I mean, I guess it could be a case of mis- or underutilization, but she hasn't exactly covered herself in glory here.  If she can find a place to excel, more power to her, I guess.

I can say for 100% certainty that the recruiting pitch in recent years by aggy is way behind was Texas puts out there, especially in the area of game atmosphere, if that matters

Agreed, I don’t think she played to her fullest potential here. I also don’t think she would’ve been playing at Nebraska over Jackson/Allick based on her production here, but I could be wrong. I am hoping maybe JE already has someone in mind.

I think it's obvious losing Sullivan off the staff hurts most at middle blocker. It's not just his acumen in developing the position. It's his advocacy in how the team should be run around the position. Sullivan helped make the position a priority.

I will say while Ames is a very good middle blocker, she never exactly jumped out of the gym. I guess I was expecting someone who looked more like Andi Jackson. Singletary looked like what I think of when I envision a star middle blocker at Texas. Frankly, Harvey has that look athletically, but just looks lost as a college level middle blocker. Her lateral and vertical speed look off the charts, but her instincts don't appear to exist. Bunton looks like a very solid MB2. Better potential than Bergmark, who I was very satisfied with.

My worst case scenario is that Ames transfers to A&M and Morrison develops her into a powerhouse. That would make it challenging to recruit against A&M for top middle blockers in the future. But I had a similar fear about Lexi Sun and Nebraska, and that worked out fine.

Losing starters in Singletary and Ames in back to back years is not a good look regardless, and makes it challenging to compete for national championships. This team would have looked different with Singletary in the lineup, IMO.

We'll see where she lands. I have no doubt wanting to win a national championship is what she's putting out there, but people say all kinds of things. Rumors that Wisconsin is a likely destination. I'm interested to see if she goes somewhere she can serve. Also, she's putting out there she wants to play more opposite. Not sure which national championship team is going to want her at that position, but what do I know?

It's highly likely she (her agent, her club coach) was already contacted before she entered the portal, because that's how this stuff works a lot of the time.

Well she wouldn’t have a contending team there, since they graduate just about everyone. Going to be a step back for them. Unlikely to win a title there over Texas
