The U.S. Ryder Cup Team has confirmed the match format for the 45th Ryder Cup, set for September 26–28, 2025, at Bethpage Black in New York.

The competition will begin on Friday, September 26, with morning foursomes (alternate shot) followed by four-ball in the afternoon. The same schedule will be played on Saturday, September 27, before The Ryder Cup concludes with 12 singles matches on Sunday, September 28.

This marks the third consecutive Ryder Cup to feature foursomes followed by four-ball on the opening two days, and the 13th time since 1981 the format has been used. The United States has implemented this structure eight times, while Europe has selected it on five occasions.

The home team has taken advantage of the format each of the last two Ryder Cups with Europe going 7-1 in foursomes matches over the first days in 2023, while the United States went 6-2 in foursomes matches at Whistling Straits in 2021.

History favors the Americans when this setup is in play: the U.S. owns a 9-3-1 record in Ryder Cups where foursomes have led off play on both Friday and Saturday.

Surprised Straka made team... been really struggling lately.

Luke Donald names his six Captain's Picks for the 2025 Ryder Cup

By Ryder Cup Europe On September 1, 2025

Quote

Luke Donald has selected Ludvig Åberg,Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka as his six Captain’s Picks to complete his 12-man European Team for the 2025 Ryder Cup in New York.

They join the six automatic qualifiers - Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus Højgaard, Robert MacIntyre, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose -for the contest against the United States, which takes place at Bethpage Black, Farmington, New York, from September 26-28.

Sweden’s Åberg and Straka of Austria will each be playing in their first away Ryder Cup, having made their debuts in the 16 ½ - 11 ½ victory in Rome two years ago.

Norwegian Hovland, who paired up with fellow Scandinavian Aberg in arecord-breaking foursomes win in Rome, will be making his third consecutive appearance. As will Ireland’s Shane Lowry, who, like Hovland, previously played for Team Europe in 2021 and 2023.

Englishman Fitzpatrick and Spain’s Rahm are the most experienced of the Captain’s Picks, with three previous appearances apiece. Fitzpatrick teed it up in 2016, 2021 and 2023, with Rahm now making it four in a row, following his debut in Paris in 2018.

European Captain Donald said: “I am delighted to welcome Ludvig, Matt, Viktor, Shane, Jon and Sepp to Team Europe, alongside our six automatic qualifiers.

“We are a settled and united team with a strong culture, with 11 of the 12 players from the victory in Rome returning, and an exciting, talented rookie in Rasmus Højgaard, who was around our team environment in Rome.

“We also have a lot of experience and that is going to be important going to Bethpage because we know the challenge that awaits us.

“Although the team itself is similar to Rome, I have approached this captaincy from a very different angle. A different challenge requires different thinking and strategies.

“I’m excited that we now have our 12 players in place, and together we are all fully focused on trying to retain the Ryder Cup in New York and trying to create history.”

The teams are set, the golf course is undergoing its finally preparations, and the calendar has flipped to the month of September meaning only a few weeks remain before the 2025 Ryder Cup commences at Bethpage Black. Slated for Sept. 26-28, the biennial event between the United States and Europe is expected to be a highly competitive contest as each team brings its own strengths (and weaknesses) to Long Island, New York.

Luke Donald made his European team official Monday by announcing his six captain's picks. Leading the blue-and-yellow side for the second time, the former world No. 1 will hope to lean on the experience of his thoroughbreds and the fond memories of Marco Simone as he returns 11 members of the 2023 squad that defeated the United States in convincing fashion.

The one new player may not look different, either, though he certainly plays a hair different than his twin brother as Rasmus Højgaard earned an automatic qualifying spot on the roster and will replace Nicolai from that 2023 squad.

Meanwhile, the United States brings a fresh crop of players into the competition as four rookies will make their debut for American captain Keegan Bradley. Choosing not to become the first player-captain for the U.S. since Arnold Palmer, Bradley selected a pair of rookies, including New York native Cameron Young, as well as stalwarts like Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay.

Experience sides with the Europeans, but not all experience is good experience; we only have to go back four years to the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits where the U.S. won by a record 10-point margin. It will certainly play a role, as will current form, home course advantage and the playing formats themselves: foursomes, four-ball and singles.

Let's take a deeper look at how both 2025 Ryder Cup teams have been comprised and where each team may thrive and/or struggle at the end of the month.

The 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris may seem like yesterday, but with time flying like it always does, somehow it is Thomas who finds himself as the most experienced member of this U.S. team. The four-time participant will be playing his first Ryder Cup without good friend and regular partner Jordan Spieth; the two teamed up in nine of Thomas' 10 sessions (not including singles).

Thomas' playing partner at Bethpage Black could tip the scale in favor of the red, white and blue. There are plenty of options, including DeChambeau, a contemporary making his third appearance. The two-time U.S. Open champion has struggled to find a foursomes partner in his prior appearances, but he did pair nicely with Scheffler at Whistling Straits.

It seems unlikely the Americans will run that duo back as Scheffler has since rocketed to the top of the golf world and will be the cornerstone of the U.S. team. He is a known quantity and can play with anyone, perhaps Henley in foursomes and Burns in four-ball.

Meanwhile, Cantlay and Schauffele's foursomes record took a hit at Marco Simone after a fast start between the Presidents Cup and the 2021 Ryder Cup teammates. It was there where Morikawa made his debut, often seen with veteran Dustin Johnson. With Johnson no longer in the fold, choosing Morikawa's partner is a key decision Bradley will need to make as he represents the team's second-best iron player and tee-to-green force.

There are a plethora of options for the U.S. headman -- a few more than Europe -- given the consistency down his roster. How Bradley ultimately decides to partner up his players will have a material impact on the competition.

IMG_20250904_062411.thumb.jpg.c93a3bd0dde12695d3271746cdf52c1f.jpg

Experience is what jumps off the page immediately looking at this group. While the U.S. has Thomas leading the pack with his fourth appearance upcoming, McIlroy will have double as many Ryder Cups under his belt once Day 1 begins. Rose is another veteran presence in much better form than he was in 2023. Fleetwood, Rahm, Hatton and Fitzpatrick are all set for their fourth playing of the Ryder Cup as well, giving Europe six players with as much or more experience than Thomas.

Europe will only field one rookie on paper, but there are four players who have yet to compete in a United States-hosted Ryder Cup, which is a completely different animal. Consider that Hovland, who played in all five sessions at Whistling Straits, posted a 0-3-2 record in his playing debut only to find his footing in Rome when he was arguably the best player in the world alongside then-rookie Åberg; the duo went 2-0-0 in foursomes together.

That is a question the Europeans, unlike the Americans, won't have to worry about answering. The visitors have a general idea of who will be paired together and in what sessions. McIlroy and Fleetwood were flawless together in foursomes in Rome along with their Scandanavian teammates. Hatton and Rahm are teammates on LIV Golf and were paired at Marco Simone, going undefeated n the alternate-shot style of play.

All of this before Rose and his 7-2-1 career record in the format are even mentioned. The Englishman did not play a single foursomes match in 2023; instead, he was tasked with shepherding MacIntyre around. The Scotsman did not lose a match in his rookie appearance, and both players may be called upon in a larger capacity this time.

With the good comes some of the bad. That is most glaring with Fitzpatrick's record of 1-7-0 in three Ryder Cups. He finally got on the board with McIlroy playing four-ball in 2023 but has a 0-5-0 record in the U.S. alone. The play of Fitzpatrick as well as Lowry are X-factors for the Europeans.

woof 😂😂😂😂😂😂

let the mental games begin...

Last night before the start of the #WalkerCup, the GB&I team were sent a lengthy video from Rory McIlroy.

“As someone who played a Walker Cup and wasn’t able to quite get it done, and then to go on to play Ryder Cups and be able to beat the Yanks in their own backyard, nothing feels better.” McIlroy closed with, “Please beat them because I know we’re going to beat them at Bethpage.”

US dominates GB&I in the Walker Cup 17-9. Still a good watch as it was played at Cypress Point.

Had I paid attention, I might have bought tickets and gone.....because that is the only way I am going to get onto Cypress Point.

Side note - the simple Peter Millar uniforms worn by the Walker Cup guys looks so much better than the Ralph Lauren crap we'll see in the Ryder Cup.

Ryder Cup: Rory McIlroy Gives Take on Team US Shirt Scandal

The Team USA squad heading into the Ryder Cup has sparked major controversy with its promotional T-shirts for the event. The uproar centers on a striking detail: the shirts feature the silhouette of a golfer who appears to be none other than Rory McIlroy, one of Team Europe's biggest stars and a longtime rival.

As expected, the matter quickly reached the Northern Irishman, who reacted tactfully, albeit with a humorous note.

"It looks more than Adam Scott to me than me," McIlroy told Sky Sports at the Wentworth Club, where he will play in the BMW PGA Championship starting Thursday.

"It looks a little similar. I don't know," he added.

Regarding the possibility of thousands of American fans at Bethpage Black wearing his image on their shirts, McIlroy stated that he has no problem with that.

"That's OK. That's fine. I won't mind that," he said.

Team USA has not commented on this controversy. However, some voices in the golf world have raised doubts about whether McIlroy is indeed the player silhouetted in the image.

Well-known golf swing analyst Luke Kerr Dineen opined on his X account that it is Scott in the image, and included an analysis of the swing seen in it to support his opinion.

PGA Tour player Michael Kim, meanwhile, said that he believes the silhouette in the image belongs to Chris Kirk, also a player on the American tour. Kim stated that he is certain that it is not McIlroy.

However, no one has been able to explain how it is possible that the promotional image of the American team for the Ryder Cup does not include a member of their own team, much less a player from another country or from the opposing team.

The Ryder Cup will be played from Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black on Long Island in New York. The event pits American and European teams against each other in a program that includes matches in foursomes, fourball, and singles formats.

The event has been held since 1927 and is considered one of the world's premier tournaments. It is played every two years at alternating venues in Europe and the United States.

Both the American and European teams will be playing this week: Team USA in the Procore Championship and Team Europe in the BMW PGA Championship.

However, both sides will have significant roster losses.

Bryson DeChambeau will not be able to compete in Napa Valley, as he is banned by the PGA Tour due to his membership in LIV Golf. Xander Schauffele will also miss the Procore Championship due to a family matter, according to a report by Sports Illustrated.

On the European side, only Sepp Straka will not tee off at the Wentworth Club, as he is taking care of his wife, who gave birth prematurely last month. This was the same reason he withdrew from the BMW Championship during the PGA Tour playoffs.

The information was revealed by European captain Luke Donald, who added that he is not worried about Straka's form heading into the Ryder Cup.

‘I don’t care’ – Keegan Bradley issues Ryder Cup message to European rivals

Keegan Bradley has no interest in getting embroiled in mind games with his European rivals ahead of the Ryder Cup later this month.

Bradley will lead his fellow Americans into battle at Bethpage Black, with talk surrounding the event intensifying as it grows closer.

Two weeks out, the majority of both teams are on the golf course this week, with 11 of the 12 Europeans in action at the BMW PGA Championship alongside their captain Luke Donald.

The Americans meanwhile are playing on home soil at the Procore Championship, with ten of Bradley’s players competing out in California.

Despite not being in the field, Bradley is present at Silverado Resort’s North Course to oversee the prep of those in action.

On Wednesday the captain faced the media with the talking points of course centring around the Ryder Cup.

During his press conference the US captain was quizzed on any potential back-and-forth ‘banter’ between the teams in the build-up.

Admitting he has no plans of getting involved with the Europeans in the weeks leading up to the trip to New York, he replied: “I really don’t care what they’re doing, I really don’t care what team Europe does.”

More than aware of the threat his rivals pose, Bradley described the current crop of Euro players as the ‘best European team ever’ paying the same compliment to captain Donald.

This however was seemingly as much as he willing to speak about his opponents. Reiterating his ‘don’t care’ stance, Bradley continued: “I don’t care what Europe is doing,

“I only care about our 12 guys, our caddies, the wives. I only care about what we’re doing…

“So they should be confident but I’m not really — I really don’t care what they say about us, I only
care about our team.”

Francesco Molinari outlines Europe’s plans to tame Ryder Cup crowd

By Josh Lees

Francesco Molinari will once again be involved in the European Ryder Cup setup as a vice-captain, and the team have already been putting in the work to prepare for the US crowd at Bethpage Black.

Much has been said about the backing that will be behind Keegan Bradley’s American team in New York.

The Europeans have been warned on numerous occasions over what reception they could receive when the action gets underway later this month.

An away Ryder Cup is one of the toughest tasks in golf, and things are expected to be much harder for the visitors this time around.

Amid all the noise in the build-up, the European team have been putting in the work behind closed doors to ensure they are able to deal with anything thrown their way.

Eleven of the 12 European players are in action at the BMW PGA Championship this week, as is captain Luke Donald and his assistant Molinari.

Speaking to bunkered.co.uk at Wentworth about the prospect of the New York crowd later, the Italian vice-captain told bunkered.co.uk: “We are very aware.

“It has been one of the main points of the preparation.” During this prep, Molinari revealed Donald and Co have reached out to experts from other sports on how best to deal with hostile fandom.

“[We’ve been] talking to people outside of golf to see how they manage the crowd in other sports,” the former Open champion added.

“But it is an experienced team, we all know what is waiting for us and we need to show up and perform.”

Molinari is no stranger to succeeding in an away Ryder Cup, having played his part in Europe’s ‘Miracle at Medinah’ 13 years ago.

It is the only Ryder Cup that has gone the way of the away team in the last nine editions of the event, and Molinari is not the only member of the current cohort who played his part in the historic victory.

Skipper Donald starred in Illinois as a player, while Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose also featured alongside the Englishman and Molinari.

They were led by Jose Maria Olazabal in 2012, another one of Donald’s returning assistants this time around.

Molinari believes this experience within the locker room will prove key in their bid to recreate history at Bethpage.

“Luke was there, Justin was there, Rory was there,” he commented. A core group from Medinah, we have Olazabal as well who will bring his experience…

“For sure that experience helps. It also good to have guys that have played in the US even without being successful, we will know what to expect.”

Despite not having home advantage the Europeans have plenty in their arsenal in their bid to defend the crown they won so convincingly at Marco Simone.

One key component of the team is Molinari’s brother Edoardo, who has prevailed as Donald’s secret weapon in recent years.

Edoardo has balance the latter stages of his career with working intently in golf statistics and data, and the Europeans have used this to their advantage.

There have been many special moments between the Molinaris throughout their careers, and working together in the Euro camp as part of Donald’s team has been another.

“It is a pleasure and honour to do [the job] with the team, especially with my brother,” Francesco explained. “It is definitely special. We were lucky to play our first one together, who could have said when we were kids that we would be here right now.”

Despite their brotherly bond, the Italians seemingly have different roles in the team. I think we are quite complimentary. I am not good with numbers,” he joked. “I try to bring something different.”
